• @hippy my spreadsheet at https://goo.gl/RBHtiS has both paces on it, 'Comparisions Days against idealised record rider' for the highest average mileage over the whole year (currently still Tommy), and 'Comparisions Days against best record rider' for a comparison against whoever currently has the highest average miles per day (currently Kurt). Both are dynamic, and will shift each time the rest of the figures are updated if they need to.

Steve on his second go needs to add 25.1 miles above the record pace to be beating the first, and 106.2 above the higher pace to match the second.

On his first, he's needing virtually 350 miles per day to beat Tommy. The trap is that every day you ride under the required distance, that distance creeps up a little to start with, and then starts to head up quite sharply after a bit. This can be seen on the 'Daily targets to beat current record' sheet.

Anyone wanting further explanations of bits on the sheets, or different data manipulation that I've not done, give me a poke, and I'll see what can be done.

  • I still can't believe they're both going. I remember following this in disbelief through January and February. To think that Steve has still only really just begun again blows my mind when I actually think about what it really means. The longer this goes on, it seems on this thread at least, we just accept he's gonna crank out another double century like its nothing, day after day. I must admit, I don't understand how their bodies doesn't just fall apart, especially considering Steve has already snapped his ankle. Continually amazed.

  • I read somewhere that somebody was riding with Steve for a while. He noted his ultra low cadence and then Steve changed into a higher gear! He is doing this with a super low heart rate, he knows how to do this, but the mental strength to get out every day, now in the dark at both ends of his day is nothing short of astonishing.
200 plus miles every day, with the winter ahead.

  • And the American is 'only' two months from finishing now. It feels like a real possibility.

Steve has always been a fan of fixed with big gears. Years ago I remember struggling around a ride on 67" fixed whilst he seemingly breezed up the climbs on 105" fixed.

  • Is the author going to do any book launchy kinda things for this? I like to pick stuff like this up in person and get the book signed if at all possible.

Dunno, could be worth asking him: https://twitter.com/citizenfishy

My pre-order copy of The Year was signed by him, but sent in the post rather than from a signing.

    from YACF:

"Steve heads to King's Lynn starting well, but with a short sleep stop towards the end of the day and completing his 215 miles after 2am. The chart doesn't show it yet as the ride finished after midnight, but Steve finished his ride within 2 miles of the ghost of Tommy Godwin riding a steady 8.57mph. Day 307/88 will be a significant one for Steve as he may well surface above that WR pace. And it was on day 88 of his first attempt that he was knocked off by an inattentive moped rider."

  • My respect for Steve and Kurt is through the roof, but now that we're nearing the end of the year my astonishment for what Tommy originally did all those years ago is mind-boggling. It might be that when it comes down to it the mental fortitude and physical demands are the same no matter what era this record is attemped, but 1939 seems a long fucking time ago when it comes to bike technology, maps, road quality, nutrition...TG must have been a hard bastard to end all hard bastards.

  • RE Kurt
Is he going to make it? I don't know about his program.

He's currently something like 1150 miles off Tommy. I know Tommy has a few light days coming up but Kurt is really going to have to nail down to beat the record by anything more than a mile or two. Bearing in mind Steve is most likely looking to beat whatever Kurt sets.

Plus Kurt has put in some very light (by his standard) days recently.

  • It looks close. To overtake it he'd have to be averaging more than 202 miles per day until the end.

In the past month he's averaged about 200 miles per day.

  • He's currently something like 1150 miles off Tommy.

    eh?

although at the moment he's day for day behind where Tommy was, he's appx 400 mi ahead of a notional 206 miles per day Tommy Godwin linear progression

  • According to @MrDrem 's spreadsheet he's currently behind the leader (in this case Tommy) by 1150 miles (and growing). Or have I misread it?

  • Yes, he's behind in absolute terms (comparing their daily position) but is still ahead of the necessary average pace (as you said, Tommy has some light days coming up, a lot of his milage came in the summer).

  • The sheet that you want to keep an eye on for Kurt is "Comparisions Days against idealised record rider" which shows him as being 227.3 miles ahead of Tommy, if Tommy had kept a constant pace. Kurt's current pace has him passing Tommy by about 278.3 miles at the moment, and beating Tommy's distance on day 362 (taken from "Comparisions Days against best record rider").

The second of those sheets is the one that you want to be watching for how Steve is doing against Kurt, currently he's about 89 miles behind on Kurt's average daily pace.
