• Good luck steve. Hopefully this doesn't set him back too far. 3 days rest is about 600 miles for this beast.
He's invested so much time and effort and has been doing the record in far more challenging conditions then Kurt. In the spirit of godwins record.
I really hope he does it.

  • What terrible luck! Heal up Steve!

  • So whats his current mileage? Is he on track?

  • The last I saw, a week or so ago, is that he is slightly ahead of Tommy Godwin’s record, slightly behind Kurt Searvogel’s distance, and way behind Amanda Coker’s record.

To get even close to any of those is pretty phenomenal I think.

  • Steve record attempt is in the spirit of Tommy Godwin. These are open roads in the UK with it's unpredictable weather, using a steel bike. But important the road were far less busy then.
The other 2 riders are not comparably but vastly noble records themselves clearly.
I really hope Steve get it. He deserves it, the video of him throwing in the towel last time was heart breaking to watch.

  • I've just had a look again at how Steve is doing. I wonder why his attempt is so much less popular this time around than last time--I suppose it must be because Tommy Godwin's record has been broken and because people have by now become spoiled dot-watching ultracycling. Steve's tracker isn't as entertaining--unless I've missed something, it doesn't give you total mileage, either for the day or the total. On YACF it said that he has done 65,000 miles by now.

  • Steve attempt is I my opinion the only like for like record attempt.
But considering that roads were much quieter then, Steve's achievements already are unbelievable.
Like a true english eccentric he's plucking away with out constant intrusion, he doesn't even like people riding with him.
Glad that he re started. He's never played the media circus nor the exhibitionist social media scrum.
And much more dignified for it.

  • I thought I read one of his posts on Facebook where he said he had a guy ride with him and he enjoyed the company.

  • At a wild guess, Steve is probably like everybody else in that he enjoys the company of some people and not that of others. :)

  • Possibly me :-)

I randomly bumped into him on a ride and said hello. I asked if he minded me riding with him for a bit and he was very welcoming and said he enjoyed people joining him occasionally and he liked the company. I don’t think he wants to be mobbed but one or two, here and there is ok. I only stayed for an hour.

He later vlogged about how I said he inspired me to try and ride >200miles in his honour... I promised him I’d do it by NYE but I’m ashamed to say I never managed it. This year, I promise.

  • Dunwich dynamo and back works well for a double century, it was my first.

  • I seem to recall he struggles with company a bit as he's aiming to keep his effort level relatively uniform, so he's hammering descents and slow on the climbs - which wouldn't necessarily be conducive for staying with other riders who may do the opposite naturally. Also, his first tumble was, I think, a result of a fellow rider hitting some ice in front of him.

Having said that, I know he has done long days with another guy so is probably just exercising a little caution with 'randoms' ;)

  • He's probably being polite... unfortunately.

  • Recent strava update suggests he's not going to make Godwins record. He's not recovered from being hit in December and can't make the difference up. I think he has given up. Pretty sad to not be able to do it due to shit drivers.

  • That's why the Americans that have done it have both done a prolonged period on closed roads though isn't it essentially.

Kurt had 2 months of the closed road loop I think, and wasn't Amanda's totally on that?

Kurt had a couple of scares from close passes, I think, before he retreated to it, and Amanda learnt from him how effective it was as far as I can tell.

  • Takes a bit of sheen off the record though doesn't it? I mean in theory you could do it in a velodrome and likely get fantastic results. Or even on a turbo.

Still a cracking effort from Steve. I'm in awe at his commitment.

  • I doubt the record would allow either indoor or turbo trainer results, even if someone was mental enough to attempt them.

  • I should I guess have pointed out that following his accident, and during the ICE trike period, Steve also rode a good amount on closed roads.

It does take something away from the majesty of the attempts, and I suspect that Kurt would have cracked it anyhow, baring incidents.

Of course, traffic volumes were lower when Godwin did it, so nothing is truly comparable anyhow.

  • Didnt Tommy Godwin do some miles on a velodrome or closed circuit?

  • Steve’s thoughts on his latest HAMR attempt...

72,388miles in 365 days... amazing, especially given the conditions and disruptions he’s had to face.

  • Very honest posting.
He may or have got the record but a legend nonetheless.
