  • Got my copy of The Year, not got far through it yet but it seems a good read and the opening chapter certainly resonated with me (as a long-distance Audax idiot).

Steve, Kurt and Miles all get a mention later on but the majority of the book is about the origins of the record.

"Light winds meant I could use more of the flatter roads without as much of a headwind penalty. A good day out turned into an even better moonlit night ride but it's getting a bit nippy out, so I'll have to remember my balaclava tomorrow."

  • He bikes past my parents house pretty often :)

  • also runs past my parents fairly often. if I head back for Christmas, I'll have to watch to see if he's headed that way, and give him a shout.

"Not the 220 I was after but considering the SE wind, not too bad. In fact it was a very enjoyable day out in the Autumn sunshine and moonlit night."

  • Passes my Son's parents house often too, normally at around the 150 to 160 mile mark - he's a steam train - steady, consistent and reliable, amazing fortitude.

  • "Steve manages an Essex-Suffolk-Cambridgeshire loop of 217 miles, putting him just 31 miles behind WR pace. At the rate of recent progress, he will hit the WR line before the weekend."

your house then? unless your son has parents other than you, pan-paternity???!

  • House : yes. Paternity : I'm only going on what I've been told. Must be, he's a good looking lad :-)

  • Is the author going to do any book launchy kinda things for this? I like to pick stuff like this up in person and get the book signed if at all possible.

  • WR pace but not WR

I'm confused. He hasn't caught up has he?

  • WR pace, or rate, is an arbritrary linear figure of appx 206 miles per day, over the year. if a rider is over that and can maintain being over it then the indicator is that WR can be eclipsed.

WR will only be known once one of the combatants has surpassed (no mean feat, even today) TG's original record.

  • Yeah, so he's back to being nearly at TG's pace? Is this for his first start or second start? Presumably his first attempt, in which case it's still possible for him to beat the record this year unless Kurt gets there first and in that case he'll probably be looking to his second attempt start?

  • It's for his second attempt. He isn't going to make it for his first
