I think you're worrying too much. DD was the longest ride I'd done by a long way, first time I did it, and I literally do not remember anything other than one tiny bump of a hill. The rest of the ride was fast, flat and fun with the beach at the end. If a guy can do it on a penny farthing, you'll be fine!

I managed to average a speed of over 13mph doing the Dynamo last year single speed with a broken toe. That would not have been feasible had there been any real hills. The elevation profile makes it look bumpier than it is because it's:
a. squashed into a very small space
b. showing you lots of very very small bumps that look more significant next to each other than they would if at least one of them was big -

Branwen, any help?? What was I doing?
Stomping along at some ridiculous pace!! I remember the Phoenix chain-gang because that was when I quietly waved you goodbye as you sailed off majestically into the night. And the god-awful pot-hole that gave pretty much one person in every group a pinch flat.
And I remember stopping a field for a leak, and then realising that as no-one was waiting for me, I could stop as long as I liked which was lovely

pain cave on the way back to Ipswich
So much this. Remember that you're going to sea level, so it's downhill on average.

Greetings folks,
Hills - gate.
Yes there are hills, but they are few and far between. East Anglia is gently rolling countryside. Yes there is a little steep hill outside Finchingfield. There is a big descent of about half a mile in to Sudbury and there is a long hill for at least a mile out of Bildeston on way to Whattisham. Do not let gradients put you off....The main thing about this ride is the distance.... Personally I wouldn't choose to do (for me) 130 miles normally. But tell me there is a magical ride all night from London to the Suffolk coast and yes, given health and strength, I'm in. I've done one 60 mile ride last month, I'll try and get an 80 mile ride done in May / early June. My work is 4 miles away from home, but most days I am going up in to town and getting 10 under my belt instead. For me it's just working towards that goal and building up the fitness as we go...
As for times taken to get there. For me it's just did I make it or not...
Peace and love,
Tim -

Tim, far be it from me to question your knowledge of the area, but the hill is actually very much inside Finchingfield. :)

Not so much worried just rather go in over equipped than under equipped. Should be easy to spot, these arrived today so will be riding with them almost all the time from now on.

If the route map I found onlines elevation is correct then I need to add more hills on my average rides.
www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Dunwich-Dynamo-route-UK
4600ft/1400m climbed over 112miles/180kmTodays ride after work was 33.5miles with 603ft climbed. So 1/2-2/3 the hilly I need.
Will have a look at some older rides and find one with good numbers then repeat it lots.
No need to overanalyse it, frankly. 1000m climbing in 100km is a fairly good, normal average for a ride that isn't flat but doesn't have any hills to be scared of - this is much flatter than that. 1400m sounds a lot (more than Ben Nevis! Shock), but you don't do it all in one big lump.
I've not ridden the DD for ages but when I did, it was really my only long ride - I was commuting maybe 6 or 8 miles each way, but not doing anything much at weekends. I might have been pretty shagged at the end, but still in good enough shape to trundle down to Ipswich for a train. Take it steady, and you'll be fine.

Clockwise, relax dude. As long as you can sort yourself out and are relatively self sufficient all will be fine. There will be loads of riders to help out too but don't depend on it. If you're not sure of your abilities to ride the entire distance then map out a ride one weekend of a quarter of the distance and when you're done ask yourself if you could do it 3 more times. There will be plenty of opportunities to stop etc.

The stopping is a big part of the fun.
Last year I had too many beers in the first half so stopped for a little nap in a yurt in a front garden somewhere in Suffolk. I woke up, they gave me a free cup of tea and I continued on.
There are absolutely no hills and the atmosphere whips you along the first 100 miles like it's 50. The last 10 or 15 with the sun coming up and the morning mist on your face are the longest miles in the world, but you'll get there and it would be no fun if it was too easy.

I'll be there with bells on.
Probably going for a slow cruise this year on the sit-up-and-beg tourer with flask of coffee and pannier full of sugary goodies.
I'll be having a nap on the beach and then trundling on over to Norwich if anyone's interested in tagging along?
Now I've moved to Bromley this year should be my longest ever ride, from door to door.

Really really looking forward to this.
I'm building a as winter trainer at the moment so prob going to go on that. Many people doing it fixed? -
• #247
I have done it fixed the two previous times I rode the DD. Going to try the road bike this year.

I'm going to try it fixed c. 71GI. I've never done more than about 70 miles fixed before...
-

it's only a few more than that, if you can ride 70 miles on the bike then you can do a flat 100.
