  • The £38 one comes with two magnets though?

    One for the crank arm ( cadence ) and another for the wheel ( speed ). There are two sensors on the transmitter that pick up both.

  • Looked at Clarence King, and yes, Gilbert, the one I do, is 4 rather than 6 reps. Did Gilbert again earlier... Doing 6 sets of those ramps just sounds disgusting.

  • Lets see how long the novelty lasts, but just did a 20 min session and it was fun?!

    Didn't have time to do the proper test and so my FTP was way too low. Im guessing that will take some of the fun out of it, it was quite chilled!

    not sure what that means exactly, however glad I now have something to compare to and hopefully improve upon.

    fun wasnt exactly how I would describe it, however it was a lot more satisfying than mindlessly putting in some blind effort on the turbo.

  • Out of interest, what does everyone do to combat Turbo boredom?

    I don't use the sufferfest vids as my laptop is too crap. I find that I really need visual stimulus; when it's racing season i record all the Eurosport content I can and watch that, or, when that's not on, I tend to need really mindless but amusing TV like The Simpsons. My mp3 player comes out to get me through particularly painful sections / intervals within a workout too.

    Just interested to see what other people do in cas I'm missing some good ideas!

  • It's just all about the music for me. If I can't get into the dj set I can't get into the session! Good in-ear headphones help.

    I lose concentration if I try and watch a race or a film.

    If you're doing long intervals then set some periodic spin-ups from a high-gear/low-cadence every few minutes. Switch up cadence.

    Stand every now and then – getting out of the saddle.

    Eat a banana.

    Do you not have anything to look at? Even if I'm listening to tunes I've got to have visual distraction or I just stare at the power number on my laptop and that make time go so... so.... sloooowww

  • It winds me up if I keep looking at the numbers. And actually doesn't help me stick to them beyond a few mins.

    I actually close my eyes for a bit, and count 4/4 (or whatever works with the music) and concentrate on the stroke/cadence.

    I am on fixed though so obviously more at one with the road floorboards ;-)

  • I tend to grimace and try not to cry. Dj set through laptop speakers in the garage but I'm never really listening, always more focussed on the ohfuckthishurtssurelythetimeisupnowohfuckivestillgot40secondstogo.

    Cry a bit.
    Swear a bit.
    Try and combat the groinular pain.
    Sweat lots.
    Get off if it all gets too much and go for a run.

    It just feels worse.
    Have you ever done any proper time on a rowing machine?
    Its a bit like that.
    I mean at the end of a rowing race I'd still probably vomit, but indoors it was always much more likely.

  • I wouldn't say people train harder on turbos, rather that turbos make training feel harder. Not many people do intense interval sessions on the road.

    Also, turbo trainers have much less inertia than riding outside which is what makes them feel different. That, combined with factors like overheating/less cooling and lower motivation means it's pretty common for power output to be at least 10% down on a trainer compared to outside.

    You ride for a shorter time (usually) because;

    • There's no junk miles
    • It's not fun
  • New fan, thumbs up.

  • I watch classic races on YouTube. Usually try and set it up to get the last 60 or 90 mins of the race depending on the workout.

    I find any Paris-Roubaix is good to suffer along to. You know they're going particularly deep.

    House or techno on the good headphones.
