caned by the school master. three strokes. for each one he would take a four stride run towards you. the pain was incredible, each time it felt as if the next one would kill you.

Isn't discipline in childhood about preparing a child for adulthood? Where in adulthood does the lesson 'if someoneone doesn't do as you tell them, hit them' reap benefits? OK the Met, but apart from that?
Dead right.

I'm pretty sure BDW appreciates that different countries have different cultures, and just because they're different doesn't have to make them worse. Indeed, to foreigners, witnessing kids telling their mums to Fuck Off....whilst arguing on the bus, makes such foreigners feel rather superior.
some culture practises female circumsision - I don't think that you can endorse your stand on physical punishment as primarily a cultural one…

That's fucked. I don't quite buy the 'I was caned and it never did me any harm' line. You can do nothing but hate and resent somebody that inflicts pain on you, particularly those who you feel have no right to do so, if anybody even does at all. It'll make you angry, revengeful, bitter...all that fluffy stuff.

What's feeling superior to do with anything? Your argument is absurd.
Tiswas, why is my argument absurd? I have lived in 6 countries, including this one. I've found that different places do things differently.
I've not said that I recommend everyone slapping kids, but that its something I (personally) understand, and support within a specific context. I think my foreign background has a lot to do with it.
It's not the British way (anymore) and I understand that as well.
Oh, and General Lucifer, speak to any Jamaican, and see if you can find ONE, that will tell you that sometimes kids tell their mums to Fuck Off there. I'm not Jamaican, but the concept of respect to parents runs deep in the West Indies. Respect to mothers there is higher than even where I grew up.......in Grenada.

I am fortunate enough to own a dvd of the film Moolaade. It deals with that subject in a very honest way. But I learned about that practice long before the film had been made. But even though I find the practice to be pathetic, its the women that often continue it. I've spoken to friends of mines about it, and at least one here in London, would want to continue the practice on their own daughter. As much as I tried to argue against it, their idea of culture outweighs common sense, and medical advice.
But I think its a world away from smacking your child for stealing money......for example.
Oh, at one time I lived in Cameroon, and know people connected to the making of Moolaade.

Sorry, I didn't realise that crime had been eradicated in Jamaica through the liberal application of a slipper to the arse.
Are you telling me that there are yardies out there feeling smug and superior and tut tutting about kids being rude to there mums?

I said I wasn't Jamaican.
Yes, probably. In fact most Caribbean people shudder at the displays of rudeness from child to parent here.
Crime in Jamaica is practically off the scales. Disrespect to parents probably wouldn't even register, if there was a measure for it. In Grenada, crime is a joke, as there is so little.

you do when it stops stinging so much

I know you're not Jamaican, GA2G - your point was that Jamaicans are not rude to their parents, and you inferred that they feel superior when they see English people with rude kids.
My point is that Jamaica has very little to feel superior about, as far as bad behaviour is concerned. -

I was caned once, I was never dumb enough to get caught again.
We had a teacher, Jack Vawkins, horrible man. He would draw two circles on the floor (one for each foot) infront of the board and three on the board (two hands and nose). He would then write on the board and move it up and down, you had to keep yourself within the circles. He would throw chalk dusters, text books and anything else he could to get you to move. If you did, cane. This was all done infront of others classes and lasted for an hour.
Twat of a man.

its really not that interesting or as shocking as i might have made out. i used to get worms (playing outside, with dogs, sucking my thumb etc) - one symptom of worms is an itchy arse (hence dogs dragging their hind quarters about) - one of my parents thought baby milk would sooth the itching - i think it came in a pressurised bottle with a thinish nozzle - anyway, was applied a bit enthusiastically / carelessly and ultimately internally -
i would say it stung like buggery but that might not be quite appropriate. -

fuck me. how old were you? i was no tough guy at school, but there is no way i would have done that. he would have had to cane me as i walked out.
i got in loads of shit at school, but thank fuck i am too young to have got caned like this^.
Kids telling their mums to fuck off on buses is not standard behaviour in this country. I'm sure you can go to any country and find horrible, dysfunctional kids telling their mothers to fuck off.
Bad behaviour does occur, but despite what the Mail and Express claim, it is not the norm.
