I think Floyd Mantis used to opt for the 3-day-fasting technique in order to hit race weight in the run up to grand tours. No pissing about with protracted diets.
I'd imagine all you can do for exercise is pootle along at 12mph/on the turbo, right at the bottom end of your fat-burning zone. TBH, I'd definitely not do it on the road, as I doubt my mental faculties would be all there.

Back in the day, jockeys used to achieve race weight by surviving on a diet of steak and salad - not bad in itself - but then sweat away excess pounds in the sauna. No wonder so many of them toppled off. Thankfully, the need for hydration is now understood.

Sounds like a good idea for the winter months to keep your weight down as well. Eat much less and spend the evenings on the turbo in front of the tv (also keeps you warm)

i can't help thinking ed has got his numbers a bit wrong here...
Me too. I worked out some of my calorie intake, sometimes I get close to the 800kcals from only my rice intake during a day. This rice is just a side accompaniement to the actual food.

Makes sense doesn't it?
You've got all day to burn breakfast off and not long before bed to burn dinner off. I should follow this rule more.

Does anyone know if there's real, sciency truth to this btw? I know that I feel better when I eat like this but don't recall reading any proper research on it.

At the moment anything over 1500cals a day is considered extravagant for me, but more importantly it's the fat content I'm keeping a close eye on. That about about 5 pints of water a day.
I've always found dieting tough, but I've discovered that I actually like salad cream, and that it basically adds flavour to rabbit food. Finally moved over to green-top milk, could I do the unthinkable and try skimmed?
Nah, I'm not completely off my rocker.

fast weight loss / crash diets doen't work longterm: FACT!
you need to adjust your eating habits for good.

I have; salad.

to talk about it as a diet suggests otherwise...

Well I guess technically it is, as I'm going away from massive portions of fatty, carby food, which is what I usually eat, including a big lunch. I'm still finding my way, but all I know is I can't keep that up. Like I said, it's more about changing habits, rather than crashing; seeking out low fat stuff, grilling meat, more veg, way more water, less coffee.
I think to judge someone's diet you'd have to be privy to what they were consuming before; in my case, two pots of sugary coffee with whole milk, biscuits and sweets, lots of meat, bread and pasta, and definitely NO VEG!

I have roughly one meal a day, which is how I managed to keep it to 800.

michael pollan talks a bit of bollocks, but ultimately his rules of eating (don't eat anything your grannie wouldn't recognize as food, stay away from the middle of the supermarket, eat more fruit and vegetables, don't eat too much) are a good guideline.
porridge: breakfast of champions. also good cold from the fridge, i like it after cycling (if there's any in the fridge) also a cornerstone of many a good foodie argument.
my recipe: bit of water, bit of milk, chopped apples fruit etc go in the porridge when cooking, top with berries AND honey OR maple syrup. nuts are also a good addition. -
