+1 to Mark.
I'm suffering and not apparently loosing hardly anything.
I haven't had beer in ages, I'm having salad for lunch every fucking day, and all I've had for breakfast for the last month has been black coffee, cornflakes and a banana.
Piss off with your loosing weight is easy bullshit.

..and on top of that, you live on top of the hill!

Yes Ed, but it's only one bleeding hill. That's only 5 minutes of my existance.
An existance that could be eating chocolate cake. Or hummus. Or pasta.

Been going to the gym pretty regularly (today is the first day this week that I have not gone), weight is just about spot on what it was pre-gym, but trousers are looser and jacket is tighter across the shoulders

Do you know how many carbs are in a banana & cornflakes?
Banana = 30g
Cornflakes without milk = 30g
Both are poor nutritional choices too. You are a vegetarian right? Protein foods would make better more nutritionally valuable meals which are also less likely to make you fat.
But I guess your choices are limited. Eat nuts, greens & vegetables. Also drink green tea, even if you dont like it. It is scientifically proven to aid in significant fat loss, especially in those with an active lifestyle. It helps you use fat stores during exercise.
You should also make sure you have good levels of omega-3's in your diet. Good cold pressed vegetable oils will probably suffice. The hummus you stated as if it was a luxury "naughty" food is exactly what you SHOULD be eating. If its good quality, it will be made with olive oil (good fats), sesame seeds & chicke peas (protein & fibre).
Also a personal question (you dont have to answer). Are you on the contraceptive pill? (they contain hormones which make you fatten up)

I'm not a morning person, the biggest concession to morning I make is eating something, cooking it first isn't going to happen.
I have Mesa flakes, which are corn and flax seed, with Soya milk, which is a protein (I have unsweetened and make up for it with Banana).
Not having coffee is not an option, during the day I drink water and green tea.
Hummus has too much salt as well as oil, I prefer to have a salad with a variety of vegetables, a whole grain (quinoa when possible) and use a small amount of salad oil and liquid aminos to flavour it. Mostly I have m&s salads as they do a variety with both pulses and whole grains, or I have an innocent food pot.
And yes I am, as I've heard that being pregnant makes you fat. And have kids.

Got a reference for that?

just did a search for 'green tea weight loss' and appear to be quite a lots of result about that.
doesn't help that the fact the first page contain website with green teas in the address and a daily mail.
the general notion is that green tea increase your metabolism which sound plausible.

Hippy:
regarding the Banana thing. I was referring to someone on a restricted diet. The most important things to eat are proteins & essential fats. Everything else is extra.
A Banana gives you a bit of vitamins & minerals sure, but the carb cost is too high. You can get these elsewhere (even a tablet).
A study performed at Birmingham (UK) University, showed that average fat oxidation rates were 17% higher after ingestion of green tea extract than after ingestion of a placebo.[7] Similarly the contribution of fat oxidation to total energy expenditure was also significantly higher by a similar percentage following ingestion of green tea extract. This implies that ingestion of green tea extract can not only increase fat oxidation during moderately intensive exercise but also improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance in healthy young men.
http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/87/3/778Oh, and Nhatt. Salt does not make you fat. Excess sodium can give you blood pressure problems, but these are remedied if you keep the balance of potassium in order. The level is much much higher than advertised guidelines might suggest. People with problems usually have a poor diet & lifestyle.
You can start using losalt in some of your foods (potassium chloride). Will deal with any potential sodium related blood pressure problems. But I assure you, a little bit of houmous is not overkill in terms of salt. My sister only weighs about 40kg and she consumes marmite, smoked fish, cheese and salty peanut butter non-stop. She actually puts soy sauce in her peanut butter sandwiches for extra kick. But she's fit as a fiddle.
Also do not understimate the pill thing. They are basically oestrogen pills. Oestrogen=fat gain.

I can't believe you'd tell people to stop eating bananas. What kind of pill freak fest would you have people live on? Nhatt's not an obese medical case.
A few points:
- they tested only 23 healthy males. The difference was only 17%.
- how much of this stuff green tea extract is actually found in green tea? (total: 890 ± 13 mg polyphenols and 366 ± 5 mg EGCG)
- Fat oxidization was claimed 17% higher - but could the corn flour placebo be the reason for the difference? It's a carb fuel source.
"Green Tea Polyphenols May Cause Liver Damage In High Doses"
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/38399.phpYou will also note that in the reference you linked to this metabolism increase bollocks is under the UNPROVEN CLAIMS section:

I'm with Hippy on this one. I remember your suggestion that we should all be only eating protein was backed up with a link to another forum that had the Daily Mail linked to as a source for some health claims.

Sorry, I'm harrimphing too much to make a valid argument. I'm eating a variety of good food, I'm staying within the calorie limit and I'm trying to watch my salt as it has something to do with water retension (see a page or so back), plus liquid aminos provide a lot of nutrients (like B12) that are hard to get in other diets.
It is very hard to do all of the following:
- Keep to a calorie limit
- Eat a diet high in protien and essential fats
- Keep carbs down, including fruit that is being used as a replacement for cake, biscuits, and other sugars
- Be ethical in my eating choices. For me, this means being vegan.
If you can suggest a menu for me, I will happily lab rat it for a set period of time.
- Keep to a calorie limit

I'd do all of them instead of having a slice of pizza. That'd burn off some calories.

You will also note that in the reference you linked to this metabolism increase bollocks is under the UNPROVEN CLAIMS section:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_tea#Unproven_claimsThat study IS NOT in the unproven claims section. The ability of green tea to help people burn fat is one of the PROVEN facts, backed up by several studies. I linked the Birmingham University one because we all know that is a real & reputable university (my local!) and the study is recent too.
There are other fanciful claims sure, but this is well known to have substance.
I have not actually seen Nhatt, but dont expect her to be fat at all based on her weight/height/activity. But if she is keen to get rid of a belly (which is probably healthy and looks fine) calorie restriction is a method that will work. I prefer people to gain weight to improve body composition and "shape" than lose it. But to get the popular "skinny" look she (and most people sadly) want, losing weight through a calorie deficit is in order.
There are no essential carbohydrates. There are however essential amino acids & essential fatty acids. A vegetarians diet is always going to be rich in carbohydrates and is typically low in the latter, but if we want to drop the calories so low as to get rid of bodyfat. Removing massive lumps of carbs which do not contain enough of our previously mentioned, useful components or fibre is what we need to do. A banana contains way too many carbs to be "worth it".
Taking a vitamin & mineral tablet while on a very restricted diet is not a ridiculous thing to do.

@Nhatt
Based on only really ever seeing you once I would not really believe you would need to lose any weight. If you want to tone up try some light weight training (push up variations, squats, sit ups etc).
From what i have read so far you have a reasonably healthy diet and making more sacrifices seems like it would be an unrealistic long term situation. Unless you want a six pack etc then i find as long as you eat healthy-ish and train consistently then you will get results. Consistency is the key. Good luck -

DFP, that study is not (yet) in the unproven claims but
"catechins in green tea increase metabolic levels, by speeding the release of brain chemical norepinephrine (noradrenaline)."
and
"Japanese researchers claim that drinking five cups of green tea a day can burn 70 to 80 extra calories. Dr. Nicholas Perricone, a self-proclaimed anti-aging specialist, appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and told Oprah's viewers they can lose 10 lbs (4.5 kg) in 6 weeks drinking green tea instead of coffee."
are.The Birmingham Uni study used Green Tea Extract, NOT green tea.
The Birmingham Uni study tested a small number of healthy males.
What if GTE has the opposite effect in females? Have they tested this?Let's say it does increase fat metabolism. How does it compare with other thermogenic substances: ephedra, bitter orange, capsicum, ginger, caffeine?
And really more to my point, why can't fat loss involve eating normal foods and doing exercise? Why does it always seem to involve magic potions and wonder drugs.
-

drastic weight loss. i've only ever achieved it through stressful situations. that i wouldn't like to experience.
losing weight steadily is difficult.

After today's ride I've probably had bit of an epiphany about just what I might be able to do on a bike if I really tried to lose weight instead of just getting stronger and more efficient to compensate.

And really more to my point, why can't fat loss involve eating normal foods and doing exercise? Why does it always seem to involve magic potions and wonder drugs.
My foremost opinion is no one should arbitarily try to "lose weight". Like you I think people should get fitter, stronger and improve nutrition to improve body composition and appearance. This is the sustainable option that will make a person healthy and happy in the long run. It also usually means gaining weight, for people who thought they had to lose some.
But people in this thread seemed reluctant to accept that idea. I was merely providing suggestions on how to get the "dieting" method to work for somebody who is already "not fat". To do it requires cumulative gains just like Team GB cycling are fond of. If green tea will help fat burning by even 5% , that is substantial and not to be mocked.
Nhatt has explained that she is already on a very limited diet yet has not achieved the fat loss she is seeking. So clearly the calorie deficit is not great enough. She has to either increase energy output or reduce calorie consumption. She already seems to be a very active person. As her diet is already limited, being more careful about food choices is probably the best option. This doesnt necessarily mean eating less, just eating wiser.
That hypothetical banana contains 30g of Carbs. The same amount as a whole tin of chick peas. Which is more filling? Which contains essential amino acids?
