Steady now, hippy.

Word to the wise. Be very wary of all protein diets. A few years ago when I was boxing and at 15.5 stone (6ft 3in) I did the Atkins diet and ate a lot of meat/fish with veg but no carbs as such. Ended up giving myself an attack of gout through this as it's very hard on the kidneys. Gout is not something you want to experience, trust me, the pain is incredible. I'm not saying fad diets don't work in the short term (depending on what you want to achieve) I'm just saying be careful, especially when it comes to consuming large amounts of protein with not much else to balance things out...
I've just done about three weeks on a low carb diet and have lost quite a bit of weight, more than I expected. I have not been targeting high protein, though. Just no rice, cereals, pasta, bread, potatoes or any kind of sugar, no eating after six etc. Lots of veg, salads, nuts, eggs and a bit of cheese. I'm sure it's probably not the healthiest way to diet but you do lose that bloated look quite quickly. I can still taste that melt in the mouth truffle tagliatelle I had after the tweed run though, and I want some more, now!

I don't pretend to understand this- I imagine that the majority of the short term fluctuations are purely to do with hydration?
78kg yesterday morning, 77.5kg this morning.
Seems like a lot- although I suppose half a litre against the volume of the whole body is fairly trivial

You don't happen to have Damo's address and perhaps an idea of which room he sleeps in do you?

I put on a kilo since eating dinner and rehydrating. 91kg Oh noes, no bantom weight world title for me.

the average male weighing 70kg has about 40 litres of water in his body, according to wikipedia. so a few litres/kilos is neither here nor there.
it is not a good idea to weigh yourself daily (or get obsessed with the numbers). once a week is better so these fluctuations are smoothed out.

makes sense.
i also like to weigh myself before and after a banging shit. saves getting pooh on the scales.

So I'm 5'4, just under 8 stone and generally quite petite, however, over the last year I seem to have grown a bit of a tum and despite cycling most days and eating pretty healthily it just will not go away.
My mum basically told me to HTFU and do 100 sit-ups every night but I feel like that will only solidify my belly into one concave muscle...will someone please tell me there's another way?
yeah, there is. Healthy eating and exercise.

not really, that's fuck all difference. what have you eaten? when did you last take a dump? 500gms is nothing.

My boss (very big danish guy) had a bet on with some friends. Who could loss the most (as a % of original weight). He basically did a bit of running and cut out snacks. But the easy win was not taking on fluids for the whole day of the weigh-in. Reckons it earnt him 1.5 - 2kg.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I've never actively tried to lose weight so all this is quite new to me, I've usually associated calorie counting with annoying girls who have screechy voices and bleached hair, but I'll give it a go.
If you really want to keep your midrift slim. Try a sport that requires you to through your upper body around alot. Something like tennis, volleyball etc. Like you say sit-ups will likely build a little bulk.

this weight loss thing is a doddle. woke up this morning had a massive piss and weighed myself sans clothes. 80kg. 2.5 kg lighter than i was last night. unless i shrank in the night as well that means i'm now considered "normal". job done. *dusts off hands. *leaves thread forever.

Always weigh myself at the same time, post dump, pre tea.
As far as controlled conditions go with these things, it's identical.
What differs is (obviously) what I ate, and whether I went to the gym or ran the previous day.

If you're not weighing your 'movements' it simply is'nt scientific.

If you bottle the sweat, you could dilute it down & sell it as homeopathic exercise.
I reckon my cap has enough dried salt on it for a family-sized portion of chips.
I'd make more money off your idea though. Who wants to design my sweat bottle? -

I'm a sweaty betty on my commute and I wanted to eke out one last use before it went in the wash.

I bag them up, index, categorise and label them.
There was a very interesting study done on the dietry benefits of live yoghurt. Basically the theory is that if you eat live yoghurt daily, you poo out a higher % of your fat intake.
The study involve monitoring total food intake, and its fat content. As well as total poo produced and its fat content. Even as a scientist, I was troubled by vision of sight of lab workers collecting someones poo each day, weighing and extracting the fat content.
Nasty.
