Weight / Fat loss

  • For me, the problem is beer.

I'm off the bike so partially out of boredom, partially because I won't be doing the exercise I have been, and partially out of the desire to figure out what's happened to me since moving to London (I've put on a lot of weight in the three years since leaving Canada), I've started a food diary. The first day which I recorded what I ate/drank I discovered that 1/3 of the day's calories came from beer. And that was a lightish night. I've often have days/nights drinking two to three times as much (basically more than my entire daily recommended calories in beer alone). And I can drink like this (or more) 3-6 days a week easily.

The mystery has been solved. So now I'm trying to drink less (and keep active even though I'm off the bike).

  • Then again, it could just be that eating less will mean that you will not be so fat. It's a bit of a toss of the coin, really.

Well, I was waiting for someone to pick up on the fact that when we talk about weight loss we really mean fat loss; few people want to weigh less by losing muscle. Except Lance Armstrong looking for a good cover story for the effects of his drug use.

  • I think not playing bike polo makes people fat.

  • [QUOTE=Damaged;1496160]So much bullshit and misinformation around "losing weight".

[*]Almost every single human on the planet can only lose 1-2lbs of fat a week - no exceptions. Anything else is water or muscle or stomach contents.

Not True. There are many people running so low on bodyfat, that 1-2lbs in a week would be impossible and may cause serious health problems.
Err.. that's what I said? I'm certainly not recommending an adult with e.g. 5% bodyfat to lose any more bodyfat or anyone to lose bodyfat unless they want to. It's general advice for normal people and pretty much universally accepted.

    [*]There are no shortcuts.

Lipsuction, Diet Pills, parasitic worms, bulimia, Injecting Hormones or Heroin.

All of those won't work in the long term without a corresponding change in diet and physical activity. Perhaps i should have said that there are no shortcuts that work in the longrun. Jeez! :-)

[*]Everyone has a genetic predisposition to being an ectomorph, endomorph or mesomorph.

Just plain nonsense, the "morph" types are vast generalisations which can be meaningless for many people.

The morph types ARE vast generalisations and most people are a combination of more than one. It can be useful to know where you fall so as to structure a relevant training and diet plan. If you are an ectomorph or "hard gainer" aimong to gain muscle mass your diet and training plan would be totaly different to that of an individual who fits the mesomorph type. E.g. as an ectomorph, no matter what I do I will never have a powerlifters physique.

[*]Fat cannot turn into muscle, muscle cannot turn into fat.

True, but energy from excess fat can help build muscle. And also muscle can be broken down by body to use as fuel.

First part, not sure what you mean. Excess Kcal ingested from fat can be converted to muscle but you can't turn existing bodyfat into muscle. It's like turning base metals into gold.
Second bit; true. Particularly if you "crash" diet.

[*]Excess carbs do not get stored as fat - excess Kcal get stored as fat

What hippy said. Furthermore, Carbs can elevate insulin which is a powerful weight gaining agent.

[*]If you lift weights you need a lot of high quality Kcal, probably more than you realise, mostly from protein (containing all essential amino acids i.e. animal protein) to fuel muscle growth.

Hahahaha!!! Getting your calories from protein would be ridiculously innefficient, expensive and possibly lead to health problems as we all need essential fatty acids to survive. Essential amino acids do not need to come from animal protein (although it is favourable). If it did all the vegans in the world would be dead.

I didn't say getting your calories from protein. I said getting high quality (meaning skimmed milk, egg whites, lean white meats etc) MOSTLY from protein. Vegetable proteins don't contain all 8 essential amino acids individually so to get all of them in your diet you would have to combine different non animal products. It's really not a concern for most people, if your aim is growing muscle tissue (as i origionally said "If you lift weights", animal protein makes life much easier.

Wasn't expecting to have to think so much!

I hope vegans dont die. xx

Or it could be that eating less makes people less carb.

  • Human afterall.

    My programmer mum thinks so.

    Fuck, it's her birthday.

  • I don't mean to carp, of course.

  • I think not playing bike polo makes people fat.

Not playing is when I drink and smoke, so yeah, that's true :P

  • Not playing is when I drink and smoke, so yeah, that's true :P

Orly? When was the last time you went to polo and didn't smoke or drink between games?

  • That's my (not crystal clear) point, Will. In between game is when I smoke and drink.

But full points for being a dick. Reported for internet stalking.

  • Orly? You want me to post a pic of you playing and smoking at the same time? Because I can do. And if I look hard enough I can no doubt find one of you playing and drinking and smoking and shooting up at the same time. For God's sake when you answered the door yesterday the stench of ale and meths that hit me was sickening.

**Powerlifters are the perfect example displaying that the somatypes are meaningless. There are tall thin powerlifters (and weightlifters) in the low-medium weight classes and there are tall "Hench" people in heavier classes. They are no different, other than the latter having eaten enough to allow them to grow big.

There is no real specifics of a powerlifters physique, other than being well muscled. For the skinny-fat guy with little muscle, it is even more essential to gain a lot of bodyweight as it will increase muscle (strength to weight ratio). The skinny-fat guy will never be very strong at a low bodyweight as they have a poor muscle perecentage. This has little to do with artificially imposed somatype generalisations but more to do with genetics & hormones.

At higher weights the gap is closed between these types of traits/people. But still somatypes are pretty useless. There is no such thing as a hard-gainer. The hard gainer just doesnt eat enough.

Fat used as fuel, not transforming it into muscle. Just fuel, because we all need fuel.

  • We must have done this before.

    Eat less.

The hard bit is following this advice.

I find a full stomach makes me dozy and lethargic, so I try to enjoy the alertness that comes with not having my gut stuffed to capacity, use that as a positive reason to eat smaller meals & take hunger pangs as prompt to focus on keeping working.

  • Oh, and try to fidget more.

  • just an amendment, when I gave up the beer for three months, I was still cycling, pretty much every day, (only form of exercise) and I was cooking fairly healthily. And giving up the beer was more of an exercise in willpower, I'd done it for a couple of months before and lost the paunch and wanted to see what would happen over a longer period of time.
Obviously I then went travelling and am drinking beer all the fucking time, so the one pack has returned, but the rest of me is still relatively slimmer.

  • You lot need to eat less.

  • Basically Jemjah, you have displayed what has been said here already. Eat less = weigh less.

People go to gyms to gain weight. Even those misguided souls who want to "tone" really want to build some firm muscles on their bellies or bottoms. This means weight gain in the form of muscle.

Going to the gym purely to lose weight, is not that effective, as you have found out.

British Military fitness is a fucking rip off. The military has some of the most backwards & innefficient training methods you are likely to find. Why does that attract people? Because you want to be yelled at/feel abused/feel pain? I know a good place in soho for that.

They dont even do that properly, plus they use public parks as venues so they dont even have overheads.

If somebody wants high quality "better than british military fitness" training & coaching from me. Ill do it 1 on 1 for the same price/free and guarantee superior results. This will sell very poorly as I am not an outstanding example of fitness, being born with shoddy genetics and having accumalted several injuries (not through training).

    With ya DFP
See several of these classes a week going on....totally beyond me how people are happy to get shouted at wearing obligatory high vis by some buerk with a camo suit on
("but I wouldnt do it otherwise...")
then practising handstand variations isnt every 40 year olds blokes idea of exercise either, so horses for courses I guess....
