I think McQueen was a fantastic designer, all his collections are wearable in my opinion, infinitely more so than many other contemporary designers. It was him that got me into fashion, and i find his story inspirational.
Not everyone has a tyrant to fight, or a cause to die for. At least he did something that enriched other peoples lives, and you cannot deny that he did indeed enrich other peoples lives. Art is as valuable as democracy, they are very closely linked.yes art is important but what is art and I am not convinced by your argument that McQueen he 'enriched lives.' Perhaps you should have a closer look at the reality of life today with sprialling world poverty and the recent Haiti earthquake springs to mind. The cult of personality is an intellectual cul-de-sac and McQueen et all sum it up.
And yes, I agree value and decency does not reside alone in those who fought tyranny and injustice [they rank highly in my book] look at the work of nurses, carers and volunteers etc etc; now they do enrich the lives of others.....many, many others, now could the same be said of Mr McQueen? No!
Now did you notice, I diagreed with you without making any personal comments about you or using expletives.

I did :-(
This thread has brought out a lot of bad feeling and what you did was wrong.....should you be banned?....No! Please don't do that again.

Who said McQueen was a result of 'the cult of personality?? He wasn't exposed in the media for being a 'personality' he got there on merit for being talented in his field, he was far from a craver of attention and limelight
I met him on several occasions out of the 'fashion circles'. I got to know him(briefly) and he was sound. He may not have enriched your life mate but to say that he didn't enrich the lives of others is a bellend thing to write

Who are we to decide whether he or anyone else is worthy of our respect or attention? It's absolutely pathetic that a thread started to pay tribute to someone who has died/topped himself has become an analysis of the worth of his life.

Well said Josh, and not for the first time on this thread.

Blimey, what a shit-storm... Controversial to the end... And beyond... :[

That is freedom of speech....if you don't want views that are contrary to yours, go and create a tribute web site AND make it clear that freedom of speech is unwelcome here!

...and did someone really just say 'what is art?'

Some of the tags on here make me wanna give someone a slap!

Some also said Art is long but life is short.

Once again... yawn. It has nothing to do with freedom of speech, it has to do with respect for other people and not behaving like a knob inappropriately. Very clever though, I see what you did there.

As sad as it is that McQueen is gone, even in these dark times we can find some light...
yeah but I don't PM people asking for them to edit their posts as my wife will be reading them.

+1 I must say, he was extremely unpretentious for a man of his position, used to bump into him in comptons every now and then, and always seemed a very grounded likeable and easy to talk to chappy.

• #217
I had him pegged as a decent bloke. Sad news.

I said he did not enrich *many *lives and that is quite different. If he enriched your life then that is fine. You disagree with me, that is fine but don't try to stifle my opinion because you don't like it.
Yes there is a cult of personality perhaps not always led by the person in question but by those who know him or worship him and that is endemic of our celebrity led world.
However, manipulating what someone says as you did earlier could be descibed in your words 'a bell end' thing to do but I won't.

For the record you are the only person here banging on about this; everyone else is saying "sad really, nice chap, talented too, what a waste". Maybe you should step off your soapbox.

If you think that i am pleased he is dead you are wrong...he never did me any harm and it is sad that someone does what he did. However, I do not believe, I am being disresptful as I would have said the same if he was still alive. Perhaps next time something like this happens a note should be included saying...this is a tribute thread....condolences and hagiographical comments only!

???? What is your definition of many?

that Marx was a bit of a cunt wasn't he
