[QUOTE=dancing james;1178963]I tend to do the less than macho classes at the gym - yoga and pilates
lots of plank work, abs work, press ups etc are included
has done wonders for my core strength
start here:-

in a few years you will be enjoying enough core strength for free handstands. -

Without trying to derail the thread.
Anyone familiar with Bikram Yoga?
I've got really tight lower back muscles and hips and wonder how much I will benefit by forking out a tenner for each session. -

I used to do Bikram in Oz and its fucking excellent*.
I had much faster results than "Power Flow" which was based on Hatha positions.
You sweat your arse off and its very physical, but I felt awesome afterwards. Cannot recommend highly enough. I did enquired about the one in Old St actually, but there was no bike parking.
*for meeting chicks.

I guess your better half hasn't started the pramercise* classes yet then?

Mr Bikram has patented his sequence, therefore if you go to a 'proper' class the moves will be the same,
everywhere else has to call it 'hot yoga' as you practise in a heated room,
I havent done the class, although he is a Rock and roll guru with 25 Rolls royces etc, so I would avoid that sort of person anyway, however its yoga,
in a hot room, it must be like stretching in a sauna, so,
must be good for the body, try it! -

I've got a place around the corner from where I live and told myself for the last 6 years that I'd try it.
How long do you think it'll take to see results Balki?
They do an introduction offer for £30.00 for 30 days. -

I reckon I could see imporvement after only a couple of visits... I gauged this on how straight I could get my legs while holding my big toes.
There is this weird breathing wank at the start though....

Thanks Balki & *m.f
I really should try it I guess, from what I've read Mr Bikram is a good business man. Makes millions a year and people still seem to hold him in high regard. -

Anything to get more flexible and stronger will do, it might even help concentration levels, which can only be a good thing, considering the amount of time I spend here.

Mmm not a lot of that around Shepherds Bush.. i'll stick to rolling around the floor with the oven on

Greasy, Bikram West is only 5 minutes from Ladbroke Grove.

I reckon I'll give the Bikram Yoga a go, based on convenience (2 minute walk door to door).
They've got a secure space to lock your bikes as well fwiw. -

"Stretch and Tone"
is it one of those places full of plump mothers barely breaking sweat with a latte in one hand chatting about their daily dramas.Nope, more like calisthenics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calisthenics
I found standard yoga a bit boring (like if I'm putting aside an hour for 'exercise' I want to be a sweaty mess by the end of it). Stretch and tone gets the heart rate up loads more, and even though I haven't been to a class in over 6 months, I've managed to maintain the flexibility. I don't think I was this flexible as a 7 year old.... if only I could get my hands on one of those box/ruler combos that measure how far past your toes your fingers go. -

Calisthenics!
Exercise of choice for the 80's housewife.

from that site:
paging wiganwill
I think Platters is on duty today. I'm cleaning my bike; in a hot room while doing one armed press ups from the ceiling .
Then I will be running around with a pram in an even hotter room before doing a "mega plank" for two hours and trying not to think about Balki's bitch-tits. -

I do 5-8 hours of yoga and pilates a week.
On a fencing training camp I did a couple of years ago there were a number of Olympic pathway contenders. Most of them lacked core strength and stability though the British number one who had been doing strength and conditioning training with chris hoy and co in Manchester had a similar level of core strength to me
yoga and pilates don't do much for beach muscles but really help with deep core

Its cool to be able to balance standing up on a medicine ball.... I reckon it makes you less likely to stack it when drunk too.

Man - those who climb have a special relationship with pain.
"the joy of positive suffering - because if something is easy, you will not enjoy it, really."
Krzysztof Wielickii often joke that i'm not into climbing, i'm into suffering and that climbing just seems to be a fitting medium.
