I wear a lid and encounter all manner of drivers who don't deserve licences on my relatively short ride to work. There's a bus garage just off Goldhawk Road and these guys are the crown princes of dickhead manoeuvres.
With enough pictures we could even set up a gallery of naughty boys!

I've got one of those cheap action cams from eBay - £12 delivered from HK plus another few quid for an 8GB micro SD card - strapped to my handlebars with a Twofish Lockblock.
Wednesday night, at Bricklayer's Arms roundabout, I had a little scare from a National Express coach [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x634t-obiws"]YouTube-
Dangerous driving by a National Express coach driver[/ame] and I emailed a link of the footage to the Met and to National Express. So far, I've got [edited at request of Met Police]. I felt a little bad at first about that but the guy who called me said it wasn't the first complaint about this driver, and my wife's eyes widened when she saw the clip and pointed out that it could have been the Met knocking on her door with some really bad news. You know, I don't feel so bad after all.- the one I posted on youtube was compressed which screwed the quality but shrank it from 83MB to 2MB. The .mov is much better quality than the .mp4

Fucking hell! I dont think you should feel bad about getting him sacked, he could have killed you and that other bloke in front of you. Well done for bringing it to their attention.

Can you put the eBay link please?

Link to the ebay cam?
I think you've made a fantastic break through and should feel very proud of yourself. One bad driver reprimanded / off the road could make all the difference to someone else's life.
Imagine if the majority of cyclists had these cameras, what a difference we could make.
Seriously considering getting one for me and mine.
Nice work mate.

@the hundreth idiot: go ahead. i encourage you to mail the clip out. firstly, the driver is so endangering you and the cyclist ahead. secondly, i myself came a cross way too close over taking actions from national express busses on a long straight two lain carriage way per direction kind of strech on the a20 - less than a foot space at speeds around 50mph as the worst case.
i wish, i had that on cam. after failing to get either reg nr nor bus nr and a couple of these overtakings later, i changed my route last year.

i thought that was quite tame from national express after living in new cross and using old kent for a few years. Utterly irresponsible move. Good idea on the camera's i might get some....

Cheers, chaps. I did wonder if I was being a bit of a wuss and I should accept it's all part of the rough and tumble of London traffic (even though I laid down some fairly solid skid marks when the driver cut me up).
I bought my action cam from this guy: eBay
There's quite a long thread on bike radar's MTB forum about this and the eBay seller seems reliable - mine certainly got delivered pretty quickly (though the instructions are not the best).
Without a video of the incident, it would just be another one to chalk down to experience: my word against the driver's, no way of taking it any further. The video evidence is pretty hard to refute but I'm still quite impressed by the speed at which National Express responded - I'd only suggested that they have a quick chat to the driver to explain what would happen when 20 tons of coach hit 80kg of flesh and blood. If drivers realised there was an ever increasing chance that their moments of madness could be played back to them, they might drive less aggressively.

+1.
My other half got intentionally cut up by a bus, see above. Since she was shaken, she didn't get the reg. This would help.I'm going to contact the guy to see if he'll do us a discount.
Says it takes a TF card though?
Did you get a class 6 SDHC or a micro SD?Keep us posted on the outcome!
-
• #241
I bought a Transcend class 6 micro SD on amazon - seems to work well as the footage direct from the camera is surprisingly good quality given the size/price of the camera and that it is attached to the handlebars of a bike.
The cam comes with a few accessories (not particularly good quality but ...) including a translucent white silicone sleeve. This is quite squidgy* and means that the cam fits in the (AA torch sized) Lockblock quite securely.

Ah wish I had seen these before. Might have actually caught the Reg of the White Van Man that hit me off my bike in Wandsworth and then sped off...

Awesome work
if people think they can risk our lives then it's the least we can do to remove them from the road. Even worse when it is a professional driver.

100th idiot,
do you just record every journey, and if nothing happens record over? how much space does your commute take up on the memory card?
think it might be interesting to have it attached and running just in case. -
• #245
Sorry, also does the lockblock come with the camera? is that how u are attaching it to your handle bars?
-
• #246
I bought the lockblock separately - I've been experimenting with some torches as bike lights. Got some pretty cheap but very powerful torches which use 14500 cells for an order of magnitude less cost than a similarly powerful bike-specific one.
I've got an 8gb card in the cam and each way on my commute takes up about 2.5gb. I then just delete the files when I plug it in to recharge (unless there was something interesting on one of the files).

Do they record sound as well? I noticed they are sound activated but I couldn't see if it records sound or not...
-
• #248
It records sound. You can hear some of it on the you tube video. I haven't used the sound activated feature - just regular recording of video and sound.

• #249
funny enough, i had a look at these VholdR ones as the top of of the line, all in one, rugged and weather proof system for rich kids or people with a proper job. (<just in case you thought you'd get away on the cheap with those!).
glad you illustrated the successful use of a 20quid version of those. although not the best to fit on a helmet, i seem to be temped myself. how well do they seem to deal with the odd rain shower? (they seem rather unsealed plasticy sort of china thingy, that brakes in the wet)
+1 for the torches as well, 900(claimed) lumen for 30/40 quid = instant win

Right, where do you complain about bus drivers? TFL?
Just got flipped the bird from a driver after I politely informed him that it's safer for me if he indicates at the very least before pulling out and cutting me up.
Not having that.
Cnut.
In. How good would that be!
Well if anyone else has any experience of the big bus company, complaints in numbers would probably hold more weight. Thanks guys.
