  • You've come from the Torch, as I recall?

I think you're going to have to accept that modern smartphone=terrible battery life.

Blackberry handsets seem to last days, or they did when I last had one.

All of the Android/iOs/Windows handsets that I have had over the last 4-5 years will die by 3pm if used.

  • Your recollection is correct, but 24 hr away from charging is a necessity, and yes previous BB's, torch included, were good on this front.

I'm winding back all the unnecessary buzzes and noises, opting for dark screensavers and lower brightness screens, plus moving all synchs and updates to manual. Up around Newcastle and the border country this week, so I'll see how it copes.

But, as GA2G has said, the ability to take proper notes on the device will do away with small notepads.

There is a Note2 on the horizon, so I'll keep an eye out.

  • One of the main reasons I've got the case, screensaver etc is to be able to flog this one in A1 condition when the Note II hoves into view.

How is the scroll on yours on webpages? Smooth or jerky?

  • Having nothing to compare to Android OS wise, ICS is great, very 'fluid', but then I'm not the best person to ask, having come in from the cold so to speak.

I do miss the little pearl button tho', and the ability to delete emails remotely (or am i missing something?)

    ah, account settings>incoming settings>etc.

and resizing widgets, some will, some won't, e.g. google search bar, how annoying!

and lack of fortnightly, or other uneven calendar scheduling, pah! - old and stupid

  • Blackberries do not use the mobile data network to get their emails, calendar etc. It is encoded on the GSM network in a proprietary way. This saves a massive amount of battery usage, hence the longer life. Other smartphones cannot compete on this.

No matter what you do, you will need to charge every night, or more frequently.

  • Velocio went back to his Galaxy Nexus 'cause his One X kept dropping calls didn't he?

    I did.

    But that dropped too.

Root cause: Vodafone had "upgraded" a local antenna. Now fixed.

I disliked the HTC changes to the ICS theme though, and also thought the battery life was crappy.

  • SG3 vs HTC ONE X...who wins?

  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus wins.

  • Have ordered a spare battery and charging dock for my note. Will update on quality when they arrive.
So far i get 24hours+ from a charge. All settings turned up full with normal call, text and email use, an hour or so kindle at 30% brightness and an hourish music playing. Very happy compared to my dell streak. Only complaint is i cannot work out how to have everything in landscape all the time like on my streak.
Scrap that. http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1359&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D1459934&v=1&libid=1341773654556&out=https%3A%2F%2Fmarket.android.com%2Fdetails%3Fid%3Dcom.devasque.rotationlocker%26hl%3Den&title=%5BQ%5D%20Landscape%20mode%20in%20home%20screen%20-%20xda-developers&txt=https%3A%2F%2Fmarket.android.com%2Fdetails%3Fi...onlocker%26amp%3Bhl%3Den&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13417738437882 does the job

  • SG3 vs HTC ONE X...who wins?

Nearly all Internet reviews have the Galaxy S III as winning in comparison to the HTC One X. But the Galaxy S III also has a user replaceable battery (very handy when battery life starts deteriorating over time), and also has the MicroSD card, which is again handy if wanting in-phone memory upgrades. The only significant win the One X has over the S III (to me) is the screen. Galaxy S III has the pentile screen, which is deemed less sharp than the One X screen. Worth seeing for yourself in a Carphonewarehouse though.

I also own the Samsung Galaxy Note, so for me neither the S III nor the One X is an upgrade, but a downgrade. Performance may be better on the quad core phones, but productivity is greater on the Note. By far. Oh yes, viewing the Internet, or playing movies on it is also a joy. That's my tuppence.

  • None of those things I consider a real decision changer personally. I doubt I'll ever change the battery, I doubt I'll ever pop the SD card out (although the face that it can't be mounted as a USB mass storage device and instead you have to use MTP is really fucking annoying. I can see why they do it, but it pisses me off something chronic).
The pentile screen.. well, I think I can see why people don't like it but TBH it's a good screen.
Happy with my S3 so far. Don't regret the choice.

  • Can someone tell me what you do on a One X or S when it crashes and you need to pop the battery to reboot it?

  • The S3 is great and the screen is lovely, not done a side by side comparison with a oneX but I like the deeper blacks and and and pretty videos on the amoled displays. Also it'll get a stylus soon, if that's your thang.

  • Can someone tell me what you do on a One X or S when it crashes and you need to pop the battery to reboot it?

Hold volume down and power for 5 or 6 seconds... it triggers hardware reboot.

  • Can someone tell me what you do on a One X or S when it crashes and you need to pop the battery to reboot it?

There's nothing you can do, but send it off for repair, every single time you want to do a hard-reboot (take the battery out).

    Or...................what Velocio said. :-)

  • Can someone tell me what you do on a One X or S when it crashes and you need to pop the battery to reboot it?

Good point never thought of that. Had to do just that yesterday with my s2.

  • Hold volume down and power for 5 or 6 seconds... it triggers hardware reboot.

Thanks, I presumed there was such a method. Same situation for iPhone too.

  • I restored my HTC One X to factory yesterday. Just playing around. It's fairly effortless to blow the ROM away several times over, try different things, and then bring it right back to the initial out of the box state.

I'm enjoying having it as a dev device that I can do such things to.

The screen is still lush. I might just use the whole device as a mobile porn privacy browser.

  • Hold volume down and power for 5 or 6 seconds... it triggers hardware reboot.

that explain why my phone went into safe mode when I discovered it shut itself down.

  • I've just got the xperia active (same as mini but tougher) rugged waterproofness.

100 miles mounted to the bars in torrential rain. Strava running and several calls for replacement bike parts and clothing.
Battery lasted for the duration and it remained waterproof and fully functioning despite two trips down the tarmac.

    Impressed.

  • anyone kn ow when the Nexus 7 is out?
also, anyone know when the new nexus phones are out (nexii? necicies?)?
my phone is due an upgrade in August, currently deliberating over Xperia S, One X or S3.
HTC is winning because i am used to sense, but that is probably not the best reason.

Galaxy Nexus is an option, but i fear its dated (with new nexums due)
    gah! what to do!?

  • 19th was the last date i saw for the Nexus 7. the £15 play store credit is only for if you order direct from Google AFAIK

  • Parryman, the first thing to do is to exclude the Xperia S from your list. Both the One X, and the Galaxy S III are far, far, far ahead of it. No comparison really.

  • Haha, fair enough! Had pretty much written the Sony off.

  • I see chrome for android is out now
