hippy how is your Desire HD?
I have been telling all my friends to get one, but the two who've bought have both got Desires because they were cheaper or the HD wasn't on their network. They really like them (and so do I, the screen/extra speed is all good over my Wildfire) but I think I'm going to hold out for the HD, or a cheap Desire once lots of people are upgrading to the HD or something else.
What's better about the HD so far? I know the screen is bigger and it does HD...The HD is nice. It's got a bigger screen (4.3") but the phone is still a good phone size.
It's super fast. I've not played with most of the new features but there's definitely some goodies in there. I've not even used the 8MP camera yet but one of the guys in the office used it and it seems pretty cool (DOF effect was cool). Better flash too. The other guy in the office with one has it running SIPdroid for stupid cheap calls. The screen protector I used is a bit shit though - frickin air bubbles grr. Music player is nifty. I just realised I'd not ever plugged headphones into the Desire and we tested the HD - the sound is sweet.
The camera seems a bit more exposed than the Desire's and the SD/SIM cover on the bottom means when you squeeze the smaller-than-Desire power button you can feel the cover flex. Nothing too major but I prefer the Desire's larger power button. -

For my wildfire I bought this, which includes a screen protector and postage for £1.95. I like silicone cases, they are nearly always plain black, fit properly and are good at preventing knocks. They also have that rim bit that goes around the front to keep it on, should protect the screen too if I throw it at the floor or something. Why pay more?

OK recommendations please for a phone for the missus - she is (by her own admission) decidedly not very technical, nor has much interest in smart phones or mobile Interwebz - however, when we were in Toronto she loved being able to log into Facebook and do the odd bit of surfing now and then. She still uses AOHell mail and does not have Exchange mail at work needing integration, so mail compatibility features are not important - she would maybe pick up mail on the mobile web. At the moment she has a three year old LG Prada touchscreen on contract, and they will pretty much throw anything at her handset wise - she would probably like to stay touchscreen. Android phones or otherwise - Cheers

Honest response: Get a Blackberry Touch.

Cheers - had not thought of the Touch

If she will be surfing via Wi-Fi in Toronto, then practically any Android will do. She might fancy one with a physical keyboard, but normally those phones don't have the latest version of the Android OS. She may surprise herself, and fall in live with green phone, since sure can read books on it, chat to friends via PingChat (or similar), then will some away airport time, getting hooked on Sudoko, or worse yet......Angry Birds. Nice-nice in the bedroom.......may go Bye-bye in the short term.

Ahem. Torch?

Torch :)
Blackberry Torch.
I constantly reflect that whilst I love my Android, the Blackberry I had before this was the most productive, non-invasive and functional device I've ever owned. And the slidey one that BB currently have with the hidden keyboard looks even better.
With Android devices 10 a penny nowadays, it's so damn confusing that I actually find the simplification of both Apple and BB product choices to be much more refreshing. I have found the Apple devices limited by software, but everything I've wanted on BB has been there. I don't use enough of the Android ecosystem to say I get the benefits of it, and the polish of the BB still outshines Android and Apple (look at battery life, speed of email alerts coming through, sync, etc).

Torch! It felt funny when I wroted it

Battery life is a biggie - she would not want to charge her phone as much as I charge my Desire
-

Blackberry Torch battery:
Talk time: Up to 5.5 hours
Standby time: : Up to 17 days/408 hours (GSM), up to 13 days/312 hours (UMTS)
Music playback: Up to 27 hours
Video playback: Up to 5.7 hoursThose numbers blow any fruity or robotic device out of the water.

Torch :)
Blackberry Torch.
etc......
Ditto, owned Blackberrys for years before my current Android phone, which I do love and can do all sorts of wonderful things on, but for pure productivity, and not having to charge on nightly basis, the blackberry won.
Although I do worry with the Torch, the amount of new stuff in it compared to old blackberrys will the battery last?

If I don't charge my Apple or Android each night, they die the next day.
With the Torch having an advertised battery life of 2 weeks on standby, I'm thinking in real terms it will last 4 or 5 days of heavy mixed use before dying totally.

Same, had Android and iphones.
I'm just not sure I can believe 4 - 5 days though, although if that's the case, would definitely consider one.
