new to nexus, really liking it so far, and lollipop, so what's a decent text app, as opposed to hangouts?

Yeah, and it works through your phone contacts so may not be ideal... TBH Hangouts is fine, I use it all the time... Would love an alternative tho'...

Why has Google decided to give the app drawer a gross white background and made its button all gross and white too.

Handcent was what I used to use, was decent. I can't be bothered installing it nowadays and just use hangouts.

Looking fto upgrade my Sony Xperia sp. Prefer a compact handset and quite liked the nexus 5 but they no longer do them. Apparently the best compact handset atm is Sony z3 compact. Should I go for another Sony or is there something more. interesting round the corner. Looking for nice minimal type phone but ideally still be quite powerful.

hangouts is really good, you just have to accept it isn't really "text messaging" as you're used to. it's more than that. utilize the "merge" feature for IM and texting under same thread.
Textra is excellent and if i chose something other than hangouts it would be this. I just don't want all the customization features so i stay away from it. It's excellent though.
Google Messenger is great, and would be perfect if it handle gifs, but it doesn't. I use it sometimes just for it's simplicity.
Hello is interesting, but annoying in its self promotion invitation crap. You can turn it off, it just annoys my OCD. worth a try.

I'm at the end of my tether. Please help.
you need to delete the account and then clear the cache and data on any app that isn't signing in... especially the play store.
It it were me i'd go into recovery and do a complete factory reset to be sure i got everything cleared. Obviously, if you do this you'll lose photos, contacts, games, etc if they aren't backed up somewhere.
you'll also lose any OTA update.
edit
i see you've solved the problem.
i still recommend a factory reset once in a while. it's like coffee, in the morning, on a Sunday, after a greasy breakfast, after a night of drinking. -

You're lucky, most networks block tethering if they can detect it.

@hippy I didn't see anyone recommending doggcatcher I have only been using it for a couple of weeks but i do really like it. It costs a couple of bucks but is worth it.

Help please! I had a Nexus 4 (screen smashed) and now have a temporary Vodafone Smart Power (which is surprisingly good actually) while I work out what to actually get. Oneplus One, Xiaomi Mi4, Moto [G?X?]?
In short - what is LFGSS' opinion on the best android handset bang for buck that will last for a couple of years? big or small, £150 - £400....

New Moto X if you're feeling flush enough, otherwise the Moto G looks sweet and great value.

I can only speak to the one I have but for what it's worth, I enjoy the OPO.

Anyone having battery life issues with the new lolipop upgrade?
I dont use music apps and regularly clear my current apps and always switch off wifi when away from my hotspots but on friday within a few hours my phone was deader than a doornail.
I think my N5 is close to being replaced.

Yep, nexus 5 on lollipop and the battery is terrible. 4 hours with no use at all and the battery had still dropped by over twenty percent.
The battery stats are useless though so I have no idea why. -

Can't you click on app to get more detail? Or just see which app is using most CPU. Watchtower I think was good for that but even Running tab should give good idea.

I've tried Watchtower but that only gives you a snapshot. There's nothing over 3% CPU so nothing obvious causing a load of drain.

I too have been getting horrible battery life on a Nexus 4 with Lollipop, I hoped it would be better tbh
It seems its a N7 2012 wifi model only update as they were massively affected by Lollipop. Mind you, pity the poor sods who bought the N7 2012 3G+wifi model, they are still on Kit-Kat apparently!
