I'm struggling to find a proper walkthrough/idiot's guide to going from absolute stock S3 to CM10.2.
Looked at a couple that don't mention having to root, others that don't mention how you go about backing your stuff up and even more that don't mention how you recover your data once you've moved to CM. I mean, it may seem fairly obvious to some, but I have no idea what happens if I take a backup with CWM - can I then restore things like messages and contacts into CM10.2?
I'm clearly an absolute moron, help me out - Touchwiz 4.3 is driving me insane.

umm I googled 'galaxy s3 cyanogen install' and found lots of guides showing everything from rooting to installing.
eg: http://xperiahtcrootingrom.com/update-install-cyanogenmod-10-2-on-samsung-galaxy-s3-i9300/
As for your stuff, depends what you want backed up. I never bothered with apps etc... and just let google sync take care of my contacts. A lot of people use Titanium backup for apps.

Ah ok, so google's got contacts etc covered... And apps I can just redownload once I get set up with CM? Didn't realise that, so if it all goes tits up and I go back to stock (more likely 4.1.2 than the current shitty 4.3 official ROM) I can just do a clean install. Or do a full back up with Kies anyway and restore everything to how it was once I reinstall the ROM with Odin.
Will look into rooting etc, just felt like all the guides I found (inc. the one you linked) gloss over a lot of stuff a noob like me would find reassuring to have confirmed, like what happens after you end up with a blank new CM install.
Cheers!

SGS toolkit is a pretty easy way to sort stuff out.

even if you totally bollocks it up, it's very easy with Odin to get it all back to stock. You'd have to do something majorly stupid to 100% brick it (and even then, Samsung have been known to reflash it if you are nice/pay).
You can also relock the bootloader and remove the flash count. That is supposedily a little more risky, but I don't see why you would want to do that.

Feckin N5 still doesn't show up on PC when plugged in via USB. There is a way to switch between MTP and PTP modes if the dropdown doesn't show up, as follow:
"For anyone else wondering about how to switch to Camera mode, go to 'Settings', then in the 'Device' section, click 'Storage', then click the ellipse on the right-hand side of the header pane, and click 'USB computer connection', then in the 'Connect As' section, check the 'Camera (PTP)' option, then it will work."

The above at least lets you grab the photos off the device.

No. Yes.

Are other people having the problem? Have you just got a duff one?
-
• #13344
I've spoken to Google Support and they're going to warranty the N5.
So, I'll have another device appearing at some stage. -

There's a few threads about the issue but being so new, not so many solutions. Some people had the same thing with the N4 and returned it or eventually found solutions.

This should worry Samsung, LG and others aiming at the mid tier. A very competitive product, essentially a slightly underpowered N4, but available via the standard retail channels (unlike the N4).
Given the price and the spec it's clear Google are using Motorola in the same way they are using the Nexus brand, namely to sell vanilla Android to the masses on devices that are extremely competitive for the price.
-
• #13348
It's not totally vanilla, but it's supposed to be a very light weight implementation though, so no bloat.

Anyone got any experience with external battery packs for a nexus 7?
Thinking this sort of thing.

Thanks to everyone's very helpful advice I've now got CM10.2 running on my SGS3. It's great! Much better and even though it's a nightly, I've not noticed any issues yet.
It didn't restore my contacts etc from the google account stuff, so ended up restoring my Touchwiz CWM backup and backing up all contacts/texts etc with Super Backup then flashing CM again. Worked a treat 2nd time around. Don't think I'll go back to touchwiz unless I find some absolutely glaring issue with this.
