When I fell off on Saturday my base layer shorts tore, but the outer layer of lycra stayed intact. How do you explain that?

So the the moral is where a cheap base layer under decent outer lycra so as not to tear it?

Not sure but my old track coach said always wear a base-layer. I pretty much do over here anyway coz it's fookin cold all the time. In Oz it was a harder argument for him :)

What's the best brakes to run with mavic open pros they'll be used for commuting club rides and audax. Basically my do it all bike.

perceived wisdom is that Shimano tend to make the best brakes, so Dura Ace would probably win
