  • This has been discussed many times. Miche switched to 107mm BBs when they changed supplier. All the evidence points to the new supplier being far eastern and supplying JIS BBs. Many happy customers are using Shimano 107mm JIS (e.g. BB-UN54) with their Miche cranks without recourse to buggering about with the chainline of their hubs.

interesting, so is it just luck of the draw if you get one of these JIS compatible ones? Might just shove it on the 110 JIS i already have and see how far it goes on and go from there. cheers

  • There doesn't seem to be any evidence that they actually changed the crank's spec, they just switched from a 110 ISO to 107 JIS axle. Depending on which old wives' tale you subscribe to in the ISO/JIS debate, that might have moved the chainline by anywhere from nothing to 3mm, but my best guess based on actually measuring ISO and JIS axles side by side is that the JIS axle moves the chainline inboard by 0.5mm, which is probably less than the variation caused by random tolerance and different assembly practices.

  • only 0.5mm? Thats nothing, i always thought it was 4.5mm, although I have no recollection where I heard that from.

Regardless, thanks a lot, that helps. Looks like one way or another I wont need to faff around with the Miche BB

  • ...and all gear cable nipples are the same?

    It sez 'ere what I've heard from a good LBS;

that campag use different sized (smaller) nipples on their gear cables. If your shifters are campag, use campag cables. The danger is the larger Shimano and after market cable nips get stuck in the shifter recess, giving you grief when replacing them.

  • I've always bought Shimano and Campag specific, never actually stuck the verniers on them though.

  • i always thought it was 4.5mm, although I have no recollection where I heard that from.

You heard it from Sheldon Brown (R.I.P.)

It's so obviously wrong that the failure of whoever is maintaining the site to correct it must surely be some kind of tribute to Sheldon's famous wind-ups.

  • Picked up a tektro front brake and some straps for my current pedals, my front wheel is missing a spoke and buckles about 20mm out where the missing spoke is, will this affect the brake?

  • this is probably a stupid question, but i'm new to west london. what's the best way to cross the westway (on a bike of course) from near warwick avenue-sort-of-area to near paddington-sort-of-area? as in, the quietest, least death-by-hgv/ten-lanes-of-40mph-traffic-etc way. thanks for your help!

Never mind the brake, it must be hitting the fork!

The roundabout under the Westway isn't that bad, but the canal tow path might be largely ridable from Little Venice to Paddington Basin. It's only 700 yards from Maida Avenue to South Wharf Rd, so not a big problem if you have to wheel your bike to avoid pitching pedestrengers into the canal.

  • It won't be doing the other spokes any good either with all the added stress

    10mm* :L

20mm probably still wouldnt hit the fork tbh, but definitely a brake.

go to the top of warwick avenue. Pass the traffic lights, after the corner of Maida avenue, go down the pavement (it's a steep-ish hill) alongside the road that leads to the roundabout, and turn right through the orange tunnel. This will bring you out by Travis Perkins, then go over the bridge toward Notting Hill, after the bridge turn left and you are at paddington station

  • what's that contraption that dammit has attached to the forks on his Boardman to help with the brakes?

  • It's a travel agent. About £15 -£20 from Evans or SJS cycles. Changes the cable travel from canti to v-brake length

I want a couple for the polo bike but can't justify spending that much atm

  • Or wait for this to come out and do the job properly

  • Interested in those ^^ but can't see how they work. I might buy a pair and see how they work as they're so cheap

Also interested in a hyd setup...

  • thanks mdcc and plastic pedals, i'll try your suggestions. repped

  • or cheapo's

The bike shop seems to have no stock at all. I might have to phone then. Eugh, the dreaded phone.

I spoke to Hope about this, they said "before Christmas" for RTM.

  • can't be long till integrated levers though right?

  • To be honest my front brake is now awesome with the Kludge-O-matic fitted, although I admit it looks crap.
