  • Brill, I'll take it! :)

Is it OK? I only need it for one song, I hate delay pedals so don't really wanna shell out for a Boss...

the build quality isn't the best, but it sounds good, although it is a lil bit noisey...

  • seen these Yahama THR10 amps? nice little practice amp

    http://www.musicradar.com/gear/all/amplification/instrument-amps/guitar-combo-amps/thr10-516844/review

Too complicated. Takes the joy out of a simple musical instrument.

  • Really? It seems fairly simple to me

  • Fender Champion 600, best little amp ever...

  • modelling amps = POC

its not because they sound bad, its just that there is something very important about the the feedback between the playing and real world acoustic effects going on in the cabinet. The ability to "choose" different kinds of modelling destroys playability in my opinion. Its probably mostly psychological. I feel the same way about multi-fx, even if they are good quality. I would prefer one or two individual stomp boxes.

If I was going to get a modelling amp, id look at roland, fender and tech 21.

  • Aye I know all that, it's not a purists tool is it? It's a cover all bases practice amp. Looks good for the money

  • Lot of cash for a tranny practice amp imho...

Its true. Fender and Roland have incredible things for half that. Tech 21 make some great analogue modelling amps.

I think the longstanding popularity of valve amps has much more to do with this "simplicity" I speak of than tone. There have been great transistor amps since the 70's, but I think they always remained in the shadows because they were more complicated and less "immediate".

  • Fender silverface Champ, best little amp ever...

    Fixed that for you.

My mate's son has got one of those Roland Cubes with digital FX. Really pretty decent for £150-ish.

I think Yamaha are hoping the adaptability (battery power, doubles as an mp3 hi-fi) will sell that THR10 amp. But it's pricy, it looks like poo, you'll get tired of the effects in three days, and small speakers just don't cut it.

I have an old Yammy amp. Stupid loud 100W, 1x12, reverb, good EQ, the ultimate beater backup... great with pedals... £70 off eBay. Woop!

  • Fixed that for you.

bang the fuck on. i love my sf champ and have gigged with it mic'd up several times. these days it lives in the front room with tremolo, slapback and reverb in front of it. occasionally wish it was a touch louder but that's why mister shure invented the sm57.

still looking for people for my new venture btw, it's kinda dirty skiffly pickin folkish stuff with an early rock n roll sound. need a great wristy drummer and "none-more-simple" bass player.

i'm going for a sun studios, dan sartain, m ward, merle travis-ish kind of thing but will be playing my daft faux-historical folk pop tunes of drowned submariners and exctinct semi mythical birds. it's a niche market i confess. obviously it's all a bit silly but i really hope to embrace that and avoid either the british sea power po facedness or the frantically winking archness of the decemberists. it's a fine line.

anyway, i'm off to the new soup studios in a couple of weeks to make the single and really need to put a new band together soon. shout if you know of anyone.

  • ^ Sounds fun. Just found out I've been roped into a ’50s country boogie thing happening in three weeks. I expect the words 'crazy', ‘cat’ and ‘Tennessee’ to be heavily featured. The main guitarist is a killer old-skool Tele picker so it'll probably be fine. Erm, I hope.

  • cheers rickster. that sounds like it could be awesome.

  • dooks your project sounds great. I've been listening to link wray on repeat recently and this really fits with your ideal sound. I'm also a bassist not in a band at the mo, but I'm also writing up a PhD so have no energy. If you're still looking in a couple of months I could be well up for it.

  • link wray is the man, man!

sure thing harold. i love working with lots of different people. especially when you're operating at enthusiastic hobby level. i have this theory that when people are busy with work, families and study etc it would be great to have a loose "collective" of people who can come and go and collaborate as the demands of their lives allow. i haven't managed to make it work yet though as it relies on:

    • songs being simple enougth to be picked up quickly
      • people being skilled enough to pick stuff up quickly
    • people being comfortable being temporarily "replaced" as things eb and flow

i'm sure i can make it work though... having said that. i'm still looking for one iteration of a three piece to get off the ground so it may not be as simple as i've made it sound.

i'll definitley drop you a pm though.

    cheers,

    a

Depends on the amp I reckon
I think the Line6 Vettas that we used to have in our rehearsal studios were bloody awful and displayed all the worst traits of modelling amps (still love the Pod XT Live for recording though).
My Vox AD120VT however is a tone monster. I suppose because a) it's still a valve amp of sorts, and b) there's still 2 60 watt channels going into a 2x12 Celestion cab it responds the way you want an amp to. Paired with a Les Paul it's fuckin' ace.
If the connectors were reliable it would be unbeatable.

  • Its true.

It's basically because a valve responds in a particular way when you change the guitar's volume. A good overdriven sound on 10 becomes a clean sound when you turn it down to 5 (or just play more quietly).
Solid state amps can't do that in the same way. And even good modelling amps are not quite there either.

  • i used to be a massive valve amp snob. in fact i still am and wouldn't really consider using anything else for live or recording. there really is nothing like a decent tube amp* operating in that window of awesomeness where the power amp's being pushed into compression. that's the sound of electric guitar to me. personally i think that amp has greater influence on the end result than the guitar so yep. still an amp snob.

however, modelling's a great tool for noodling at home, demos and generally having bit of fun. i have a pod and would definitley consider something little to use at home alongside the champ. they're so much fun, pretty good sounding, reliable, light and cheap, why wouldn't you?

*i've heard plenty of crappy sounding tube amps too.

  • Fixed that for you.

I'd loooooooooove an old Champ, and preferably Tweed, but I'm not made of money... Boo...
Ideally, I'd nab a super early AC15... Again, not made of money...

  • my sf was £250 about four or five years ago. you can still find them for not loads more than that. i think the influx of; at first bespoke, and later affordable single ended low wattage amps (like the C600) has helped keep prices, if not honest, at least not ridiculous.

they're pennies in the states too. i found loads at under $200 in california pawn shops a few years back... was sorely tempted to buy a job lot and ship them back but shipping and import duty meant the margins were minimal.

  • I am a transistor amp enthusiast. I actually do not like the way valve amps colour the sound let alone all the maintenance hassle. I like the way they sound when other people play them sure, but they are not for me. I prefer the predictable more transparent characteristics of a transistor amp. Much more balanced frequency response.

I play through a gibson/norlin L3, and would upgrade to its bigger brother the L5 (BB king amp) if I needed it for gigs. If I had lots of cash, it probably get an evans.

  • Would anyone on here be interested in my mexican-made Fender Duo-Sonic from the 80's before I put it on ebay?
Not the rarest Duo-Sonic but still a very sexy little guitar. Pm me if you're interested. Also have a 1969 Fender Swinger I could be tempted to part with for the right money...

  • ^ Swingers are vera cool… is that 24" scale or 22.5"? What colour?

    So are Duo-Sonics… I once had a sunburst '63…

^^ Funny but I like tranny amps too. The trouble is, often they tend to be a bit percussive-sounding, and they don't take off at volume without the right pedal.

I love my old 70s Fender Pro Reverb, but gigged it Sunday and it was running hot… weird swishy noises coming through at the end… same problem I asked the guy to fix, and he obviously didn't… but mending leaky old caps on valve amps often has you chasing a fault up the chain with no end in sight…

Nice to hear a mention of Evans amps. Lab Series too…. awesome workhorses. I fancy a Webb. Ultimate pedal steel combo, and Steve Cropper used one for years. Rocking horse shit over here alas….

  • Ideally, I'd nab a super early AC15...

Hold on, hasn't Joss got one of those? You gotta have some dirt on that boy...

  • He sold it for £1100-1200 a few years back... :$

  • I played rhythm guitar on this:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/we-play-rock-music-ep/id510542982
Thought I might as well pimp it.
    It's on spotify too.
