Ah, you have travelled this rocky road before me. Yep. The bloody Pro Reverb seems to weigh 20lbs more than it did 10 years ago...
The absolute best Fender amp I've tried is my mate's early ’60s brown Vibrolux. It's a really rare configuration with 2x6L6s giving about 35 watts into a 1x12". It's just mind-bogglingly good. And he uses an outboard Fender Reverb... and a Klon... and a 64 Telecaster... the bastard.
BlueQuinn, will listen to choons at a more suitable hour... cheers...

Me too BQ.
Vibroluxes are sweeeet. Guitar player in my other band used to have a brown knob re-issue. Very cool amp.
I'd like to try a proper deluxe reverb too. All the tele guys in country-tele-picker land seem to swear by them. 18 watts ish i think. Always been too poor to contemplate dropping over a grand on an amp though.... can't see that changing any time soon either.

Fender Deluxe Reverbs are bloody nice. Sound great for rhythm. I used an LP through one on that^ record, though it's been produced too much really.

PS Anyone got a 2 X 12 cab they want rid of? Empty is fine, means I can put some nice repro Celestions in there...
Might be selling this sometime soon. Its a dumble style panhead 2x12, with a V30 and a Greenback in the top.
Amp might also be for sale if anyone is interested... Its a rehoused mesa boogie studio 22.

Not guitar but I'm reeling from the news of Levon's passing. One of my all time heros. A sad sad week. Got all choked up seeing footage of him in his prime earlier this week.
In other, cheerier, news: i've been to the studio this week making a rekkid. Oh yes. Went really well. Hoping it's going to be released on vinyl this summer. will let you know.
Recording was just me and an engineer, Simon Trought, at Soup in Limehouse. They've got some lovely kit there including a suhweeeet tweed bassman. Didn't add any newfangled electronic guitar in the end, just acoustic guitar, banjo and bass with an awesome sounding 51 p-bass reissue. Took a while getting used to the pickup cover but once i found a playing position that thing sounded enormous with flatwounds and a squishy compressor pumping away.
Also, went to see Herman Dune last night. Cool show. David Ivar's obvioulsy been listening to a lot of CSN&Y era NY. Played with a three piece, I've never hear anyone get closer to that |Neil Young sound. They had the whole deal: Neil's CSNY era Gretsch into a selection of small amps including a "woody" champ, another small fender I couldn't make out and a little Mesa Boogie combo too. Bass player had a Music Master short-scale bass into a Silverface Bassman. All thuddy, squashy and warm. A loping, cymbal-averse drummer and suddenly chugging open cowboy chords in G sound just amazingly cool. If you closed your eyes you could have been in the room for the Down By the River session... Unfortunately he then went and ruined it by nooding on and on with exploding amp sound and frantic Bigsby abuse and on just like Neil would have. Super fun at first but after an hour or so...
Still an awesome gig though.

excellent. do you accept money?
Arf. I had a 70s sf pro reverb too and sold it for exactly the same reasons as you describe.
When i bought it someone had tried to tame the headroom by replacing the EL34s with EL34GAYs (yeah yeah i know) but lord knows what that had done to it up the chain. It was forever conking out, hissing and banging.
It sounded great when it worked though. Like a twin you could push into the gloriously spiky zone at perfect gig levels. Mmmm. unfortunately it was also the same size and a good way towards being the same weight as a twin. When i finally quit my skronky loud band the pro had to go.
