Which Saddle?

  • Who asked about cheap? I was responding to Master.

  • Where I could get new Specialized Romin any version in black and 143mm cheap in UK/EU

    ?

  • Ok, well in that case they start at £80 retail, so you won't find cheaper than that as they're never in the sales.

  • While the Romin saddles come in three different widths it seems that Selle only does one width per model. Curious as to what the logic is and how one compares to the other.

Just had my bum measured at the Specialized store in Covent Garden (sitbones 120mm apart) and the guy in the shop suggested I get a 155 Romin as I tend to ride fairly upright. That's wider than any of the Selle saddles available, so what width would I need if I wanted to try Selle?

  • They used to do a cheaper 'Comp' model of the Romin with cromoly rails that retailed around £60-65, but they dropped it from the range and now only do the ti (Expert) and carbon (Pro) railed versions - no doubt specifically to take advantage of its popularity - plus the S-works variant.

The Toupé is still available in Comp flavour, but the only Comp-spec Romin is the rather different and much uglier Romin Evo.

It's not always the width that important, as it's the shape of the saddle that is.

The saddle width measurement is an easy way to narrow down the saddle choice, but ultimately it down to how you find it, just buy one, try it a couple weeks and return it if you can't get comfortable (taking advantage of their return policy).

  • Anyone got a Romin 155? Think I'd be up for buying for cashmoney or swapping/pxing based on condition for my basically mint Romin 143 Evo Expert (bought about 2 weeks ago for £55 from here).

  • I've nothing to trade but I might be interested in buying your 143mm version if you decide to sell!

  • ^ I'll let you know, might be swapping it for a 143 in white, but would rather black and think i'd like to try a 155. If you're london-based could do it for £50, if I can avoid posting it...

  • A very simple question which I would be very happy if someone could answer please:

Will a monolink system give me the ability to slam the saddle further forward then my SLR Thomson inline seatpost combo?

  • Have you considered a bikefit/stretching?

  • Im picking up the widest Romin tonight.

It will be replacing a slr on the road bike - I'm not entirely enthused about the weight of it but want to try it out.

As Spotter told me he likes them

Who do you think but a bikefitter would put you in a place like this?

  • At the moment:

  • It should give you another few mm. It might be easier and cheaper to insert a layback post the other way around.

  • ^Yep, Gastoning it is probably a good idea, it'll give you a greater safety margin until you buy a smaller bike.

Ah go on, they're not that heavy. It's just that SLRs are very light. If you like it you can save up for one of the fancier crabon versions (the Pro is a claimed 167g in 155mm, and they don't use Italian units like Selle Italia do).

Okay, so we are not talking centimetres here.

Pythagoras, I would have this issue on any sized bike that has not a 74° seat tube.

  • Surely a bike with a shorter top tube and a taller headtube would be better than running a TT style saddle position?

  • The custom that Scherrit designed for me says 74. And I am not ready for a new frame because the SLR rails might fatigue slightly faster on my current setup.

  • It's more the looking silly thing that would bother me.

  • Not going to change anything if the monorail does not work. Rather take a spare saddle on longer rides.

  • Bike fitting is fucking voodoo for the white middle class

  • Are these yours, Mr Bear?

  • 130 Specialized Romins on offer at Sigma Sport.

(if I hadn't just splurged on a moody carbon one I'd be going for one!)
