Which Saddle?

  • I can't tell if the nose is that wide or the rear is that narrow.

  • Either way it's making my gooch twinge just looking at it.

  • Either way it's making my gooch twinge just looking at it.

Surely more contact area = less pressure?

  • Depends what shape your gooch is i s'pose. I'll take a Romin over that thing any day.

  • not really - there are parts of me that I don't want any pressure on at all.

  • Maybe if you have the hips of a 10 year old boy then it will work for you.

  • Looks like a modern version of a Kashimax keirin saddle.

  • Donning my tinfoil hat and getting all paranoid for this one. I'm looking at getting a Turbo for a(hopefully) upcoming build and the one thing that's bothering me is the lack of perineal relief. My round commute comes in just under 25km and my spins really don't push past 50-60. Would I need to make a conscious effort to get out of the saddle at intervals to make sure blood flow is okay? Have I got anything to worry about or am I just being silly? Any input in this regard is mucho appreciated. Cheers.

  • What saddle are you using now?

    I've used the following saddles:

Concor (original), Turbo (orgoinal and re-issue), Cinelli Unicanitor (not re-isssue, stripped to plastic), Flite (re-issue), Turbomatic II (original), Brooks B-17 team pro, Kashimax Aero, Kashimax 5 Gold and a Fujita Seamless.

Out of those I've only had problems with the Kashimax's (too hard) and the Concor (50k's in shorts though). I'm currently using a Flite on my CX / all round bike that gets ridden most days (10k's return in shorts / jeans) and 50-60k's (in lycra) with no problems. The only time I ever had problems with blood flow was when the nose of the Unicanitor was pointed slightly up and that was it.

In saying that, it's your junk, which will be different to mine.

  • There is a good article on the Cervelo blog about saddles and blood flow etc - from memory it syas that not everyone will need a cut-out saddle but there aren't too many down sides to having one if you don't need it.

Some of it is Women specifc/focussed - but a lot of the principles are the same

  • I've put in an order for one of these in UD finish with a little extra lay-up to cope with the weight of my epic thighs. Should be nice and comfy for 550km sportives. Strikes me as a very classic curved shape. I seem to get on with that. Like a Gobi but more road friendly, with a flatter nose, for stem chewing positioning.

They seem quite short, and very curvy.

Interested to hear how you get on.

  • Thats the one.

I'm on a Tune Kom Voor at the moment. That seems a slight improvement (for my gooch at least) on that. I really hate padding or cut-outs.

  • Shape looks pretty similar to a Tune Speedneedle?

  • Might as well cross-post in here: Anyone got an SLR they're looking to shift? Can be tatty as you like, not an issue.

Willing to trade a brand new Fizik Arione and attached Fizik saddle bag for one, or even british pounds stirling.

  • I have a ti railed SLR. Nice nick. But yellow.

Currently using a fairly battered BeOne saddle, long discontinued but it's lightly padded and has a mild cutout towards the rear. This is the best picture I have of it:

Out of interest what was the issue with the Concor, just general discomfort? That was the other option I was considering but have found a black Turbo for good money. How do you rate the Turbos for comfort?

    Thanks, checking that out now.

  • I found the Concor and Kashimax Aero and 5 Gold too "round" on top for my liking, and the lip at the back prevented me from moving back if I wanted to. I prefer flatter saddles, like the Flite.

My favourite saddle of all time is the original Cinelli Unicanitor stripped to plastic. They just flex perfectly.

  • Fitted my new Smud last night. Amazing piece of workmanship. Testing it quickly on the turbo felt pretty good. The taper to the fat nose feels nice when moving into the drops. Going to do a 50km test ride tonight.

  • Tell me!

  • Loved it!

Bit slippy at first. Felt like I was slidding forward despite the perfect angle. Plus it felt brutally hard at first too. Considering this was bought for 5 - 25 hour rides I was a bit meh about it.

Then 20mins into the ride I kinda forgot about it. Fits my sit bones perfectly, nice rear ramp to push against sat up climbing, nice flat wide front for lent forward desending, and slight curve kept me on the sweet spot without any pressure on the gooch nerves when cruising on the hoods. I reckon its a winner.

  • ^ Sounds like my SLR.

  • I had my SLR on the bike before I swapped it. I found the SLR had a small sweet spot, and kept me in the same position too much. So it fits. But I cant move around on it.

I guess the moving around thing comes from my MTBing, and is a personal taste thing.

But yeah, the fit is probably very similar. I've spent a few years on SLRs without exploding in a puff of smoke after all.

  • I've been riding an SLR for a few months now and although it's fairly comfortable, no matter what position I seem to have it in I find myself having problems with blood flow. I was thinking a specialized romin with it's cutout might remedy my numb nuts. Anything else worth looking at? Should I just try a few hundred more positions with the SLR?

  • Sounds like the SLR is the right size, yet the wrong shape. I'm not really sold on the voodoo of cut-outs. If it were me I'd look for a saddle with the same effective width, but with a different shape.

Spent 60mins on the turbo with the Smud under me last night. I find everything uncomfortable on the turbo usually. Saddles, shoes, gloves, the angle of my hoods... everything. But the saddle just kinda disappeared. The idea of riding 5 hour sportives on a stiff plan carbon saddle might seem odd. But I havent been happier.
