Good to see you yesterday. Sorry to hear about the wipeout. Wondered where you'd got to after seeing some of the others from the Hythe cafe roll into the Select garage.
If you fancy a training ride sometime then I go down into Kent and use some routes from bigfoot.cc which I've edited a little. Need to start riding my geared bike again as my fixed is going back to Italy for a while for frame mods and a new paint job.

Maybe it could go to the forum. Do the servers need monies @Velocio ?
Or, we can buy a few pints with it next time our paths cross.
Or maybe a charity if you felt that way inclined?
Or record yourself setting it on fire while doing the Macarena in a pink tutu, singing "hippy is the best, chuck out the rest" to the tune of Advance Australia Fair? -

Surprisingly not. Or rather: We have little in the bank (about £150) but our revenue each month (inc donations) is around £700 and our costs each month only £600... so actually we're OK right now.
I do have to spend just over £200 on a SSL wildcard cert in the near future, which will wipe out the cash reserves... but I can just put that on my credit card and the current cashflow will mean that it catches up by the end of March.
So long as we're not running a major deficit I largely don't mind contributing to cover the short-term cash flow shenanigans.

Cool. Looks like the pink tutu is gonna get a workout then @rive_gauche

-
• #3184
anytime champ, you doing the flanders thing?, could spend it in euros..
-
• #3185
What Flanders thing - the Ronde tourist sportive thing? I did that years ago and it was awesome so I'm almost scared to go back and have a slightly less awesome experience. Also, training and shit..

• #3186
fairy snuff, well next time you fancy a few beers west london, let me know, I go down to the office in Slough a fair bit so hopping over to paddington is reasonably convenient
..or there's always double or quits :)
-
• #3187
How to stay a winner - win once and never play again.
What would you double up on though?
-
• #3188
Definitely up for training rides, let me know when you are going and if I can I will join. Likewise I usually go out to Surrey most weekends and know some decent routes if you want to mix it up a bit.
-
• #3189
No worries, we have only met once! Glad your frame made it round, how many more rides do you think you can get out of it?!
-
• #3190
Well, I got another commute out of it yesterday but the crack seems to be growing at quite a rate so I'm on the Inbred today as I don't want to walk home (or pull my teeth out of the road). I'll probably bunnyhop it to death over the weekend just to see it break properly. Kinesis have said they'll give me a discount off a new frame so that'll be the quickest way to get back up and running but I'm considering custom too.

What's people's strategy for the early morning starts way outside town? Drive? Stay the night before? I don't really want to buy a car just so I can ride my bike more, but rentals aren't so great for ferrying bikes around. Then if you stay the night before, do you stay a second night, or just try to hustle so you've enough time to get back to London after?
Complete noob question I know, but am just trying to figure out logistics...

I got up at 4:30am and cycled to the start for the Wye Wed.
If it's too far away then I'd consider either car or train and possible B&B, depending on which is easier/cheaper. If you don't own a car, use a train and stay in a B&B or camp. When training last year I had the gf so we could share driving if we were ok to drive. Some times we stayed in motorway services because we were both wrecked.

Good service from Kinesis, great excuse/opportunity to get a custom frame too.
*goes home to damage frame in order to justify a custom replacement to wife....
-
• #3194
I'd like a custom frame but the Kinesis is nice and I reckon a size up would help with the midfoot/overlap issue. I'm pretty sure I have the smaller end of the scale, the 54 and could do with the 57 which is only 1cm longer in the top tube but might make slower London riding a bit nicer. Although the 57 has a 2.5cm longer head tube. If only I knew a bike fitter...

Guess it depends on how far you need to travel to reach the start. When I've done rides in the Cotswolds I've stayed overnight with friends who live near the start. With the Wye Wednesday like @hippy I got up at 0430 but unlike him didn't cycle all the way to the start. I got the train part of the way and cycled a bit. Same on the way back. It took me just over an hour to get home. If it's going to take more than 2 hours to get home after the ride then I would consider finding somewhere to stay. Obviously depends on how you feel afterwards.

Cool. I'm now on the countdown for LOL and will be riding with a friend who hasn't been riding much lately. Hoping to get in 4 x 100km+ rides in from now till then. He probably won't do any training unless I go with him so two of those will be up to Much Hadham and back. A little bit through town then Epping Forest followed by country lanes. About 65km each way. Pretty flat. That'll be 25/2 and 4/3 both Wednesdays. The only other training day I'll have available will be 1/3 (Sunday) so we could do one then. I was thinking of doing a fairly hilly Kent one I rode a few weeks ago which I think was about 107km but don't mind really if you know some good routes.
There's also 60km route I do non-stop as it means that I can work on pacing myself i.e. not pushing hard enough so that a stop is required and maintaining a good riding position. It also means that it's not a full day so I can do it while fasting or if I have work the same day so there's enough time to get home and crack on.

With a bit of forward planning, trains and a travelodge the night before really needn't cost ever so much. Certainly cheaper than buying a car anyway!
On most events, you'll easily be able to find a room mate and split the cost of a twin room.
Otherwise, riding out early in the morning is another way, and has the bonus of more time on the bike.
If a ride is logistically/financially impossible without a car, then there are other events or you can ride a DIY from your front door.

RRtY - http://ebasic.easily.co.uk/04C053/02C00B/rrty.htm
The way I have my life set up this year I think I could actually do it. It's the "miss a month and start again" bit that is scary.
-
• #3199
I read someone's report about RRtY and it sounds nifty. You've already started in Feb, right so, just 11 to go :)

As my training rides seem to be getting longer and longer I was wondering about making them into DIY events. But then they are actual events rather than training. Hmm. Not sure.
Also wanted to say thanks to a guy called Liam who lent me a rear light as mine had blown its bulb. He's probably not on the forum.
