  • £20 per year? That's one hotel breakfast. Devs gotta eat too.

  • I know, I'm a dev myself. But I rarely use RWGPS and have spent a few thousand € on this little adventure already. That's what I meant by bad timing. :)

  • If you've spent a few £K on this then what's another 20 quid for a service you're presumably finding beneficial? Why should bike companies get all your money but software be free?
We always get that shit... "oh, we don't have budget for that, can you just take less time to do it?" You're just doing yourself a disservice in the long run by cheapening the beautiful work we do. Maybe.

  • "What's another x amount of €" is the thought that's been in my head the most these past months. It has to stop somewhere. RWGPS is totally in their right to start asking money for their service. I merely commented on the timing.

But I'll happily pay for the month as skinny said.

It's a hotel breakfast for the other dev(s) and not for MisterTomTom. :)

  • Stop trying to take food out of poor software developer mouths. If it wasn't for us, you'd all be playing hopscotch by yourselves still.

  • I've only just planned to CP 2. Concentrated too much on gear acquisition and fitness and not enough on this crucial element.
Far more work getting a decent route than I ever anticipated. Much care needed not to find yourself on a banned road or dual carriage way. Heat maps are great but often find that the majority are taking bike paths and I can't work out whether the bike path is a proper disused Railway line bike path or whether it's a London spec bike path.
    Plenty of time though right?

  • No, I'd be running all my own software written in BASIC. :)

  • I'm somewhere halfway in Czechia with my route planning. Proper time sink :) But gear and training is almost done so got the whole weekend and next week to plan my route.

  • My route is done (sort of). I have 3920km with 48,301 metres which sounds a lot!

  • It took a dev to create BASIC. You'd be trying to work out how to solder something to the top of your tv.

  • It doesn't matter how much time you spend on it you will still have to be able to route around stuff when riding it so I wouldn't worry. The more you can do now the better but it's never going to be perfect. I think zigzag on yacf did the first one having come up with a route the night before so in comparison you have feckin' ages.

  • In what software?

  • Hang on, you posted a route months ago. You can't bullshit me, I remember everything!

except family birthdays, people's names, phone numbers for anyone, ever...

I bet yours is optimised to fuck and you pass me while I'm doing circles in a field.

  • One more for the list then :)

    skinny - #1
    gregory - #62
    MisterTomTom - #90
    hippy - #142
    DiscoPotato - #147
    7ven - #177
    rj - #253b
    PBoynton - #208

  • You can't bullshit me, I remember everything!

Ha ha ha, that was quickly plugged in to work out distance for the application and the route to the first CP has far too much Germany in it and is about 50km longer than necessary. :) I haven't looked at it since that post.

  • Yeah yeah yeah... I bet you've studied so much of the route you've found a little known rift in the space time continuum and your route is under 2000km, all of it downhill...

  • @hippy , @PBoynton
    Are you both using RideWithGPS?
Just want to make sure my smugness on minimal elevation is well founded.

  • I am using RideWithGPS. What are you using?

  • 1000m extra climb over 4000k isn't much. Actually more like 2000m but still..

That smugness will go quick if your route is on a banned road or something than mine isn't on. :)

Is yours with or without all the required parcours?

  • Also RideWithGPS.
I did some using the Strava route planner and after importing it to rwgps the elevation came out much lower

  • I haven't been up an alp before, the smug is attempting to cover up how much i'm bricking it.
I vouch that my route is true and clean officer, no funny business, all parcours and checkpoints correct and accounted for....

  • You've done a good job then. Damn. I feel obliged to take a massive detour just to lose some elevation now and give the dot watchers another boner - they love it when you do dumb shit.

  • Ha, I just lost another 1500m of elev.

Yes, doc, everything is a competition, no doc, I know it's not healthy.

  • It took a dev to create BASIC.

Yeah, me. I've just kept quiet about it.
