Veloviewer Tile Bagging?

  • Let me know how this is six years later.

  • What is that? Do you want me to ride it? Do you have a GPX? I'm only doing 20-30km rides at the moment because I'm just getting out at lunch or before work. No big ones yet.

  • That is my tiling east, one (of maybe three or four?). While I did (this is my Strava), I definitely wouldn’t recommend anybody else to ride this.

  • The squadratinhos (what a supremely shit name) aspect of squadrats (also a shit name) might get me out covering some more local ground (running), and then I'll do the bigger squares on the bike.

There's a private golf course (Roehampton Club) near me that will limit my Übersquadratinho as there's also a tile that's all River Thames (in between Putney and Wandsworth, possibly doable at low tide but fuck that) so that pretty much limits me to extending South and East.

But there are a few chunks of Putney Heath, Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park that are ripe for random runs.

  • "one of the London residences of The Sultan of Brunei (The Aviary Farm in Windmill Lane)"

That's probably why they didn't let me through.

Legs are burning from nettles and I still didn't get the square I'm after. 3rd try will be climbing a tree...

Walked through flooded canal paths. Not seen that much water down there before.

  • You do make me chuckle; please enlighten me where this missed square was. I remember tiling West London was straight forward.

  • I think he's going after the much smaller squadratinho squares that are part of squadrats.com.

Each "normal" sized square from Veloviewer is cut up into 8x8 smaller squares, and you can try and get each of those. Many of these are far harder to get as they are often entirely private property.

  • Wellmeadow allotments is locked so I've been trying to bushwack from the canal path

  • Right, that’s what happens when you stop commuting.

  • It's what happened since I stopped turbo training (and I found the free Squadrats site).
Since L'esperit I've not touched my turbo. Let's call it this year's "off season".

  • 150k today, 31 tiles, Added 2 to my big square.

Rained a bit but not enough for a jacket. Pissing down now so guess I dodged a bullet.

  • 80k this morning (should've done a longer route but had to be back to go out) for another 23 tiles and another +2 on the big square.

24x24 It's like when you first start training - "big" early gainz :D

  • 5k this afternoon (running) for another 9 local small tiles.

Plans forming to do a shortish ride, lock up the bike, do a run, then a shortish ride back home.

This works well for a few places like Richmond Park where there's loads that are not reachable by bike but I'm not up to running 10k yet to do it all as a run.

  • Just got back from a lunch ride. Should have some smaller ones (we need a better name for these).

Didn't quite go to plan as a trail that's on maps isn't actually there (just a horse field) and a gate to a trail is double locked so that's not been a through way for a while. Need to update OSM.

  • Woah!! Don’t give them what they want

  • a gate to a trail is double locked so that's not been a through way for a while. Need to update OSM

If you can be bothered maybe check with the local highway authority and see if it should be open according to their records.

  • I've already edited it. See above. If it's wrong someone else can fix it. But given what satellite view looks like it looks pretty private.

  • Still got 37 little squares and increase my yardino by 36

These repeated efforts are getting a bit boring though. With no chance of a square increase I feel like I may as well just use 'proper' rides to get these further out mini squares.

At some point the radius of my coverage will increase beyond what I can ride at lunch anyway and then it's all done and dusted - I'll -have- to collect them using big rides so progress will slow to a trickle.

  • It’s about the journey not the destination or something 🤷‍♂️

  • It's definitely encouraging me to be a bit more creative with my route planning but it's also meant I've not done any turbo since I started doing this. No bad thing right now, as it's basically off season.

Now I regret sending the Tripster to Poland. I could really do with bigger tyres and I miss my disc brakes and silly low gearing (not that I'm climbing anything here).

  • Yeah this is what lead me to getting the Standert. I’ve not been on the turbo for 2/3 years maybe lol
I’m toying with it now I’m racing but honestly enjoy getting out way mire

Yeah, I'm prolonging it by doing bike/run/bike. ~30 min run sandwiched between two 15 min rides. Or a 20 minute run between two 20 min rides.

If I did it all by bike I'd get all of the smaller tiles in a fraction of the time, but then I'd soon run out of stuff within range. Running is my major goal (for shifting the lard) and makes it easier to get some squares without having to lug a bike with me.

There's one particular small tile in the North East corner of the Wetland Centre in Barnes that's going to be a pain as it's not part of the path that's accessible to the public.
