  • El cheapo seat clamp @17g

Easton Loc ons @ 136g quite neatly done, not sure on how comfy they will be, got the Thick ones, ment to be 25a rubber, don't feel that soft or tacky, firmer than my old ODI Yeti grips.

Might have to chop down the old EA50 bars so matchy matchy bar&grips.

The stack of Hi 5 value packs....... sort of helping two newbies get ready for the London 46 ride so it's a cheap way to introduce them to gels and things on practice rides. Not so sure on the caffeine+ stuff though.

  • As I have been rejected for the London Ride 46 miler me and Rollins slip into a support role for the other two (maybe 3) that should be doing it.
Knocked out 20.5 miles in 1.45 hours moving time today, introducing james to the Hi5 stuff and getting him to drink more on rides.
I reckon he can do it (46 miles in around 4.5 hours) and he feels better today after knocking out 20.5 miles in 20+ temps with drinking more than just water.
Coastal ride out, stopped off at the Redoubt and left with volley fire from the ranges, then along the sea defences then back inland to the quieter and shady canal path.

New seat post clamp, bit slack on fit, post didn't slip, -30+grams :)
New orange grips, unsure, not as comfy and a few grams heavier than the ODI's

No hipster coffee bar operating from a converted horse box back at our finish point :(

  • Just a gentle jolly into town.

Stopped off at the local halfrauds, look at basket things.
Kinda ticked some boxes and £14 in store and actually comes with a Q/R seemed sturdy enough, might give it a whirl.

    Still looking at rear racks.
Bright orange grips made bike easy to watch from distance, although bike theft is not on the scale of London.

  • Stopped to watch fishes in pond.

You could fish with a slice of bread and cricket bat here.......

  • Loads of carp.

    Or to non fishy types.
Piranas, millions of them, leaping from the water, eating cats and small children, don't get near the waters edge :)

  • Got used to bike now.

Had a bit of a speed wobble on first ride. Moved seat up, bars down, will add slightly longer stem later.
Wound it up to 22mph with no issues today. Grips arent as comfy as i hoped, but certainly bright and grippy enough with or without gloves on.
Cheapo lightweight seat clamp is a slack fit but clampping fine, no slippage of post.

  • It's a disgusting mix of colours and patterns (that saddle!) but in the best of ways :)

Great that you're enjoying riding it!

  • After many black on black bikes i needed something gaudy.

Kind of a poor mans mid life crisis going on.

Got a stack of yellow stickers in box......... fork may get stickered up yellow yet, maybe try the red saddle.
It's a nicer ride than the Dolan, but then the Dolan is more focused as a track weapon. Still need to chop down the steel fork, but the carbon one is riding nicely, no toe overlap.
    :)

  • mid life crisis going on

Much better than the standard 1A behaviour of getting an expensive dorky stock road bike. Keep on keepin' on!

  • Not much change since i last added here.
Tried to remove end of finger, that's pretty much grown back. Haven't ridden much due to temps (hot) and lack of locker at work to stash stuff so if i ride in i have to drag every thing in and out every day as anything left unlocked goes walkies.

Spied metal in a hedge, it's been there a while.
    Been and dragged it out........

  • Bit big me-thinks.
Could zip tie it to the narrow rack but i think i need to set it further back as it will catch the back of my legs.

  • Got stuffs from storage.
Shopping basket is a bit big so ditching that for now.

Got another rear rack to test fit, bit of adjustment on this one so i should be able to get it to sit lower.
Also got big hacksaw and bench grinder so can trim down steel fork.

  • What could possibly go wrong.

Used 2 jubilee clips as a cutting guide. Alu steerers can be zipped through with a pipe cutter, need the hacksaw for steel, although cutting guides are fairly cheap nowdays it's a tool with very limited use so bodging it :)

  • Worked rather well.
Quick bevel with the bench grinder, then zip the dremel around inside the steerer.

  • Porky fork back on.
The cut Surly now comes in at 914g down from 986g uncut.

The cut carbon Dolan is a slimline 578g.

The carbon just feels dead, just from handling the steel it's tinging and pinging like a giant tuning fork. I was tempted to keep the carbon fork but doubt large tyres and mud and limited clearance will be a good combo, seen loads of frame damage to steel and Alu from muddy races.
Will start looking fitting a front mudguard somehow, may look to clip-on types.
Roller rode very well with the Dolan fork, got used to it now, only had a quick blast on the steel fork ages ago and the Dolan felt sharper handling wise.

  • 700x28 tyre and Tektro R539 caliper.
Had to drop the pads on the caliper arms.
Will be swapping to posher Clements 28's for a bit while i look into 30-35mm cx tyres.

  • P clips, p clips, my kingdom for p clips.

Been round 6 shops locally looking for fecking p clips, no one stocks them.

Might try this for rear rack. https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/seat-posts/286-passport-seat-clamp-with-rack-mount/

  • Been round 6 shops locally looking for fecking p clips, no one stocks them.

    Try a hardware/DIY store maybe?

  • Halfords/B&Q/Wilko/3x independent retailers. Can find big ones and plastic ones.

Oh well will have to do some online shopping.

On a side note, just ran an M4 tap through the fork lug hole. Just need some M4 threaded bolts now......... might be a goer for front mudguard.

  • I've just bought two sets, ones with the black powder-coating. Will be with me Wednesday I should think - happy to bung a pair in the post foc if that helps?

  • Thank you for the offer richardshill :) i shall decline, but thank you.
In no rush and trying to fit a front mudguard at the moment...... if this dosen't work i shall need more p-clips.
Need a new chain ring so some extra small parts from SJS to look at, they do p-clips. Kinda thought it would be super easy to pick up locally but can only find plastic or out size ones.

Damn surly for no guard/rack mountings :)

  • No worries, here if anyone needs them.
I bagged them for the same reason - ended up going to SJS after visiting four bikeshops!
