  • Just sat here looking and thinking about things.

Had a rough go at weighing it. It's around 9.5kg as it is.

Now trim the steerer, ditch spacers, bit of weight there.
Set post height and cut down a post, bit more.
Tiny bit with tidying up cables.
Easy 500 grams off the tyres.
If i swap stem and bars.
I think i can get down around 8.5kg.

Didn't feel heavy when i rode it last night.
Will center and dial in the brakes tonight.

And i need to find a hacksaw for the steel steerer tube :)

  • Finger has gone a nice shade of deep purple since Dolan bit me on Saturday night.
Finger nail is still part of me but very delicate, i keep catching my finger tip........fecking hurts.

As i haven't been too handy i haven't done much.
I wanna ride at the weekend.
Dolan bit my rear brake trigger finger :(
    I can't find a hacksaw.
Don't think my cheapo pipe cutter was designed for steel.

    Options then.
    Ride not.
Wop on Dolan carbon fork with cut down Alu steerer tube, both are 1" 1/8 simples.

The Dolan steerer fits through the FSA headset bearing fine, but is a very tight fit into the cup.

The steerer has a layer of varnish/clearcoat on, had to scrape that off, smear with grease and hey presto, Rollins now has a Carbon fork :)

  • This version of Burn cropped up on youtube, modern metal old school or whatever you wanna call it :)

  • Perhaps Rollins is just a Victim of Changes :)
    hit them high notes.

  • Proper test ride.
14 miler keeping Big James company and prep work for his London 46 ride (which i didn't get in)

NDS but shows cable colours off.

Must look into the fork specs, sure the Dolan is shorter than the stock steel fork.
Went with SS over fixed as have to get used to ride. Unbeliveably agile through traffic, felt a bit unstable at 20+mph and i can still trim a bit of wheelbase down by playing with sprockets and 1/2 links. I only had a quick gentle go with steel forks and it felt more relaxed with them, need to cut down the steel steerer first.
Will trim the Dolan steerer a bit as well.

  • Bit of drafting, James is ace for drafting.

  • James has swapped tyres now so is cruising along at 16-17mph, several weeks back it was 13mph, he still has a few gears left to use. Hopefully we can get him upto 18+mph cruising speed before the London 46, the goal was around 4 hours to do it. I might drop the 15t fixed sprocket back on mine for next ride.

We stopped for coffee on the seafront, hipster horse box conversion coffee shack, but not hipster prices and Tunnocks tea cakes.

  • Things got odd.
A police boat zipped across and pulled a swimming fella out of the water very close to shore.

  • We saw a Loch Ness sea monster.

  • Now at home and about to start doing things to Rollins :)

Weigh all the things, see if parts bin can shed some off.

  • felt a bit unstable at 20+mph

Would a longer stem help it feel a bit more stable?

  • @alialias possibly.

Could just be my position on the bike and trying to wind the bike up to speed quickly, i had a similar first impression with the Dolan, some minor changes and just getting used to the bike and it wasn't an issue.
I should have taken measurements against the FXE, the Surly appears to have a shorter back end, i had the wheel pretty slammed in the Dolan. Same chain and sprockets and wheel is further back in drop outs to get tension on Rollins.

    Been playing with the forks.
Surly specs 375mm axle to crown. 38mm offset. 300mm steerer tube.
Dolan specs 300mm axle to crown. 43mm rake. (from website)
Dolan actual is 377mm axle to crown, and i very roughly make it 47mm rake.

I checked the Surly fork and it's bang on to website specs. Dolan is way different to specs i found on website.
I have borrowed a 90mm stem to play with later on, i need a hacksaw so i can trim down the steel steerer tube.
    Uncut Surly fork 987grams
    Cut Dolan fork.....586grams

Had a parts bin weigh in. Not as much wiggle room as i expected, but..... can knock 30g off seat clamp, 100g off bars, going from burly MTB stems to stubbie roadie stem knocks off more, not much difference with seat posts other than trimming down. Tyre swap will knock around 250g rotating mass per wheel.
For purist weight weenies the safety/made in Taiwan stickers will be a couple of grams *
Got some Easton grips coming, gaudy orange but cheap :) must stop the coloured parts thing.

I think the DMR Wingbars are a bit burly for what i want, so a swap around there.

*if i was really worried about weight i would have stayed with Alu frame :)

  • Dug out the old spare v12's

They just happen to have a goldish yellow end cap, would blend in well and being new the bearings and bushes aren't knackered :)

  • I don't like the way you've glossed over this sea serpent sighting and evidence-gathering. Illuminatus?

    We deserve the truth.

  • Nope you've lost me fizzy.bleach.

  • Oh.

you want a photo of the lady on the beach.

I decided that would be ungentlemanly to provide such evidence of the Loch Ness Seamonster.

    However.........

We did take it serious that she would dip under the water and reappear, strong currents an all that, being trade of sorts, duty of care kicked in. Sea monster emerged and gracefully changed and left.
We had a minor Bond moment.
I haven't gotten out much lately, that may be evident :)

  • Did some CRC shopping last night, turns out they work BH Mondays and my stuff has been shipped. Best so far is within 22 hours of ordering from CRC, i will be impressed if it turns up in the morning :)

Got a load of those cheap high5 value packs, drop them on my colleagues that are doing the London 46 ride, gotta get them riding more distance and hit them up with a taster of fueling for the ride.
Looks like several water stations on route.
I didn't get in so me and Rollins are going to whizz around as race support and carry stuff for the others to gracefully change into post-event.

  • So it was a shape shifting type of creature? Far out!

    https://youtu.be/okl1zuKFWng

  • Or possibly a Mermaid :)

  • Probably def a mermaid, now you mention it.

  • While i await the box of extra orangeness from CRC (maybe tomorrow)

    Been thinking about rackage.
The Dolan was totally dialled in with a solid fixing 3 point attachment that could be removed and refitted in under 5mins.
Lack of rack mounts on Rollins means a rear rack is either a seatpost Q/R mount affair (not heard much good about them and hefty)
P-clips and a bit more time and faffing.
    Or a front basket.

Is there a thread on "what basket" ? will go searching.

Only need it for commuting with a smallish bag, easily under 5kg.
This is sort off looking good as it is just a drop fit over the bars and rest against headtube.
    https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/luggage/spencer-atb-fitting-baskets-with-support/

Very simple, not much to go wrong, very cheap but maybe too cheap.

  • That will rub the paint off of your headtube.

  • Just get a Wald

  • Ta chaps.

Just had a quick search and Walds crop up a lot on here.
Looks like i can grab a Wald pretty much anywhere as well.
