Why?
It was a 140 mile detour, it cost him a huge amount of time.
Do we know what the real purpose was? (I doubt it was to visit that particular Taco Bell.)

I imagine if you're aware of any problems then you'd hopefully understand before the start what you can do to the fit to address them or reduce the risk of them happening.
Even if the issue is recurring you might want to take the risk at the beginning of the race with the faster fit and hope it doesn't happen.

Rules are often interpreted differently and this is the problem.
Well that and the fact that internet loves to provide an opinion that's not often wanted, needed, or qualified to do so.
He is being transparent though.

What happens is that a fit that is ok for 100km, 600km, even 1000km, might to start causing you problems after twice that distance.
My Condor Tempo only starts to feel "right" after 12+ hours in the saddle. On short trips it feels like I'm in some kind of a long stretched out hammock. (The initial fit was done with PBP in mind and I haven't moved anything since.)

I remember on TCR 2016, day 3, leaving the last town to start the climb up into the Jura in Eastern France, probably about 1000km in, acknowledging that my achilles was a problem and that I was going to have to do something about it.
I'd never had achilles pain before on any ride. I stopped at the side of the road and spent 10 minutes googling what to do. I then put my saddle down quite a bit. If I hadn't done that, I expect I would have had to DNF.

I’ve not heard anything besides the above.
If they wanted to do that why enter a race why not just tour it? Like I said think it undermines it in my opinion, slightly disrespectful to other riders.

not a great bike fitter is he then?
also this ain't allowed unless he gives the same individual feedback to all racers... -

Ah, in terms of possibly taking away a place from someone who wanted to race it but didn't get a place?
Possibly, but where do you draw the line with those arguments. If the Taco Bell detour guy doesn't come last does it mean that the person behind was also depriving someone of a place to race it? What about all of the people that entered knowing they probably won't likely finish it? That's a particularly slippery slope - best not going there.

Yes but also those who finish behind the taco visitor are slightly demeaned.

Fyi my issues stem from NOT using my correct fit. Post must have slipped before marking. As for the Achilles I've been midfoot and pain free since, so presume it was my short socks (designed to avoid last year's tendon issue!!) That ribbed the tendon. Now I'm just balancing changes to cope.

We're getting outside assistance from hippy here. Isn't that against the rules?

OK - that was why you were on about tape measures.
I had seat post slip on PBP and it caused a bunch of problems. -

Not if he is free to give that assistance to all teh people on this thread who are worried about teh rules.....

Taken from a slimming angle.

Donncha got out of bed early and is still passed by Marcel.

He's grown a few more trees. That buffalo is amazing, too.

Scenery is stunning. I can’t see how it’s possibly to follow these events without getting the urge to take part.
-
• #1920
Because you then remember it would be really expensive and would utterly destroy you!
-
• #1921
That’s part of the fun surely!
What’s the estimated cost? -
• #1922
This. It would be horrible for most of us.

cough bison cough

Thanks that’s really helpful.
Hippy does have a fitter who I am sure is following his progress!
What happens is that a fit that is ok for 100km, 600km, even 1000km, might to start causing you problems after twice that distance. Basically your body changes when you ride 18+ hours a day for a few days. Some bits get looser, some stiffer, some damaged. Part of the race is how you deal with that and how you make the necessary adjustments to keep the show on the road.
