Try removing the front bolt and levering the stem clamp slightly more open with a large screwdriver or similar whilst jiggling the bars, it has always worked for me....

Cheers. I didn't want to push it too much as wasn't certain they were compatible. Now I am gonna get that sucka in somehow.

getting wide risers into quills is a bit of a dark art without fucking them. All about the angles
-

It's all about rotating the bars as you move the quill along the bars.

Right well I got it in! And I taped the bars with my favourite tape, Cinelli Caleida:
The 28c Clement Strada would not fit into the rear triangle so I swapped out both and will wait until stock of the 25c re-appears as it seems there are none in the entire world. Waiting on a new chainring so will eventually run this 48/19. Not feeling the graphics on the H Plus Sons, any idea how to get them off?
I'm also aware that the graphics on the wheels don't currently match, as I clearly put the sprocket on the wrong side of the hub. That will change when I put a 19t on, and hopefully a full set a gumwalls as well.

That looks tight, the amber walls will look even better!
Also, the sticker on the front is just my surname btw - if you wanna remove it -
• #33
Haha really? I liked the font and minimalist element of it. I did realise it was a name-tag!
25c Stradas are back in stock mat Wiggle so should be able to get a second one shortly and it will be gumwall goodness.
Anyone know how to get the H Plus Son decals off though?

Paint stripper should work well, I've heard.
Great frame, good match with the forks too.

The Strada tans are back in stock and delivered today, so finally I have a matching pair. Does anyone want a 28c one? Been commuting on it, and done two 2 hour rides on it. Have lowered the saddle and rolled the bars slightly forward as I felt too much weight going through my wrists and I hate that. Pics once the tyres are fitted.
And I have decided to get it painted I think, although when I don't know. But I'll keep it black, but with one of those lush NJS-style multi-coloured sparkly paintjobs. If I do will have to swap out the Condor headset, unless I can get that re-painted too.

Right the gumwalls are on and looking sharp, pics to follow. Been struggling with the cockpit from both an aesthetic and ergonomic point of view. After an age of yearning for it, I've discovered I'm not a huge fan of Jags with risers, on this frame at least. So I've decided to have a punt on this 3TT Mega Chromix, thinking the shape will compliment the teardrop downtube, and some Easton Monkey Lites.
And a word on the downtube: when did frame designs like this start coming in? It must have been just before Aluminium superseded steel as the main material to build bike frames out of, and frame shape looks to my eye like an early template of a lot of track frames to come. Anyone have a guess when this frame might have been built?

Yaaaaaaaassssss

Looks kinda similar to Donohue 853 frames to me? Maybe early 90s? That could be way way off though.
-
• #43
Well I was thinking late 80s/early 90s so maybe not. Those Donohues are lush.

Just found the Mega Chromix for a £12.50 here, result!
They also have a Benotto Modelo 27000 which makes me think wistfully of my dearly departed frame. That said mine was the Modelo 1700 with a heart-shaped cutout, supposedly prone to catastrophic failure in the seat tube due to the BB shell being overheated during building, but it was lush. Until I crashed it.

Clearly spamming my own thread now, have ordered the stem, much shiny, and having a look at an Easton Monkeylite that has already been inserted into a quill and so has some insertion scratches which the seller considers cosmetic. My understanding with carbon that as long as the weave isn't scratched it should still be solid. Anyone with greater carbon experience that me vouching for that?

Unless it has really chewed into them they'll be fine. Impact marks might make me err on the cautious side.

Right so I have a 50T Campag pista chainring enroute from @ùbér_grùbér and a Easton Monkeylite also bought offa the forum, and the stem coming, hopefully will get to fit it all this weekend.
Also was made extremely happy yesterday by fortuitous sequence of events. I hadn't removed the WARD sticker yet from the headtube, and I was walking through Temple Meads station with the bike slung over a shoulder. I started idly picking at the sticker and pulled it off, realising as I did it was individual letters, so at that point I had WAR left. It wasn't until that evening I suddenly thought of calling the bike WAR BASTARD, which if there are any Spaced fans out there was one of the battlebots in one of the best ever episodes. This made me very, very happy.

So @Miitch where did you get the letter stickers from? I want to intersect the bastard vertically with WAR, so the B above the A and then going down. It will be a lil off centre but I don't care, so happy!

I work in a shop called Edwardes and we have custom stickers there. So I just used the middle bit of it to make WARD

Any left? Is there a B or a T?

Got the Mega Chromix and fitted it. Wasn't sure about it so took it off. Fitted it again this weekend and liked it a lot more. However I am back with the Nitto risers and my hands/wrists just don't like the angle and sweep of them, so am on the shop for some decent MTB risers. I think the recent I didn't like the Chromix is that it jars with the older seatpost and crankset, both of which are borrowed from another bike and are due to be replaced when I have the funds/opportunity. Any suggestions for the seatpost? I was thinking Nitto, else a matchy 3TTT, if there is such a thing for the Chromix. Crankset will be a modern Record Pista eventually.
Sharpied the H Plus decals, and the gumwalls look great on it. And the bike is an absolute blast to ride.
Really? No way in hell it was getting the Jag stem though, you can see the marks from where I tried. Should I have tried harder? Rubber mallet harder?
Edit: it looks like you are right, the old standard for MTB bars was 25.4. Clearly technically I should be able to get the bar into the Jag. Will have to try again tonight.
