BTW Dutch government is discussing an emergency law to allow dual nationality for unmarried Brits (Dutch / British is now only allowed if you are married to a Cloggy) I have email addresses if you know people affected, just sent a lot of emails to MPs.

^pm sent. I know someone for whom this will be great news..

    Edit. New page fail.

  • So tomorrow is a big day for the Brexit process at the HoC. Does anyone know the main things that will happen?

  • The denser flat-earth brexitteurs will be left foaming at the mouth when the Speaker,
John Bercow, refuses to allow amendments that demand the EU compromises by allowing the British border on the island of Ireland to be staffed exclusively by redwhite&blue unicorns, (possibly in airships).
Many MPs from all over the brexit spectrum will continue to confuse the Withdrawal Agreement with 'a deal'.
JRM may again demand TMay prorogues Parliament to stop brexit being stopped.
The WillofthePeople will be invoked by many who normaly disdain their electorates.
Hen-pecked brexitteurs will be rude, again, to Jeremy Corbyn, just to remind Tory Party members that they still want to be Leader, (but not just yet).
May will make a speech/the same speech/ say anything to just get to the vote at 7PM.

The/any vote will not solve anything,
as the Tory Party is split, and the DUP won't vote for anything other than the right to continue to be exactly the same as the rest of the UK, (except where Womens' Rights are concerned, and evolution).

  • I need some form of flowchart...

  • If only there was someone you could summon with the @ function who was good at producing such things

  • As far as I see it...today is only voting on the amendments right?

Maybot is whipping her MP's to getting behind and voting for the Brady amendment, which is the one that says we go back to the EU to get the backstop wording changed to 'Alternative arrangements to be decided'. But she isn't actually putting her name to the amendment because that would mean she couldn't pivot on it later when it doesn't work. The ERG thinks this back stop doesn't go far enough and have already come out and said they are voting against the whip and I believe later/this morning said that they have decided to wait an hour before the vote to make up their minds about whether they are voting for or against that amendment, just to keep everyone guessing. These shenanigans ignore the fact that the EU have said there is no alternative to the back stop or wording of such and therefore no negotiating to be done on the deal if Maybot isnt changing her red lines, which she cant do. (as per Sabine Weyand, Deputy chief negotiator, last night)

All of the above hinges on whether John Bercow actually selects this amendment for vote...Likely he will, imagine there might be uproar if he didn't...

Amidst all that going on, apparently No.10 has said the the government only has a commitment to make a statement by Feb 13th to set out next steps. That's all, meaning there will not necessarily be a two step debate starting on Feb 13th with vote on Feb 14th. E.g. running down the no deal clock appears to be a very likely endgame now and one that the ERG must be frothing about.

While all that was going on yesterday, the government installed mandatory leave to remain for EU cittizens staying for longer than 3 months. Labour in a shock move decided last minute to vote against it but in truly amazing traditional 'missing opposition' form they had 76 labour MPs missing from the vote and the bill passed its second reading by just 63 votes. For balance I don't know how many Tory or other party MPs were there or absent because I am too lazy to find out.

I also found out about the Hungry gap this morning. This is a 4 month period starting in March when the UK cant grow enough fresh food to feed its population and relies heavily on store, frozen and EU imports to feed the nation. Remind me when a hard crash out Brexit starts again?

Is that clear enough for you @pipwish ?

Also, I'm beginning to think Brexit is seriously harming my mental health and I might have to completely disconnect from all electronic devices to be Ok. Seeing as I work at a PC all day this might be difficult to achieve and I have very little will power.

    edit: Speeling.

  • or TL;dr the beeb have laid it out a bit more coherently here ...I think...im still reading it. it might be tosh

  • Another week has gone by, the clock is ticking louder, and yet it seems that it is STILL the same old status quo with nobody able to agree on anything.
The voting tonight is on up to 16 amendments I read somewhere.
But that's still nothing like another "Meaningful Vote" (remember the 430-200 defeat not very long ago).
So we'll soon be only a few DAYS away from BREXIT DAY and yet we're in the complete darkness as to which direction we're (not) moving.
    It's getting scary tbh.
Thank god I am not a business owner and not employed in manufacturing or retail.
Time to rethink my future in this country, honestly.
Today has got BLACK TUESDAY written all over it.

  • Also, I'm beginning to think Brexit is seriously harming my mental health

    Yep, since 2016.

  • "This proposal has all the professionalism of the losing side in an episode of the Apprentice ordered by Lord Sugar to devise and sell a new dog grooming product."

  • Heh, try compounding all this worry with the additional factor of moving to Valencia, Spain on April 24th. It's been planned for a year and we haven't been able to bring the date any further forward, not for want of trying.

Very real possibility that we could be kicked out of Spain after 3 months with no home in the UK as we need to let it to afford the move, and it will be occupied for a minimum of six months.

  • Flatearth brexitteur plan fomented within their own echo chamber,
    not unsurprisingly, rejected by EU27.

I admire their determination, believing that an evermore additive combination of cake, cherries, unicorns, airships, on-stilts, (others yet to be dreamt of), will win round the EU27,
when each individual component in its own right is impossible.

Nothing bad happens if you completely stop reading the news. I did it for a while because it just made me angry every morning for essentially no benefit to me. Reading this thread would be enough to keep you in the loop I guess. Try it

  • Reading this thread makes me angry.

    Anyway.

I remember reading somewhere that it's generally better to engage with local news because there's a chance that you can take action on it - national / international tends to be ALL BAD and there's nothing you can do, so you end up feeling powerless and depressed.

  • Local news is as bad. Everything's closing and falling apart (care homes, local police station gone, rubbish collection, roads).
Ealing (where I live) has lost in excess of 60% of its govt funding since the Tories came apparently - I can't imagine action being taken on much when they're in a funding emergency.

  • The turd is unable to be polished so it has been rolled in glitter and ready for debate.

Good selection of amendments up for debate/vote though.

  • I'm with Caroline Lucas - the ERG pushing for this is an attempt to run the clock down rather than good faith. (Not actually sure if she intended to imply intent or just reality).

  • #theyneedusmorethanweneedthem

    I fucking hate our government.

  • Yep we live with the deluded....

  • One opinion that was put forward which would solve the problem but really isnt being talked about.

Why doesn't England just leave the UK? is that even possible? then the UK (NI, Wales and Scotland going forward) stays in the EU and everyone (except Londoners) are happy. No?

Then little England can celebrate its fleg and St georges day properly.

  • A summary for anyone who can't be fucked reading through another screed of possible permutations and outcomes based on non-existent technology: The Malthouse Compromise = unicorns.
