• When I first started riding in the 90's I made the mistake of sourcing a lot of kit from Halfords. I bought a cheap pair of 700c tyres and went home to fit them. Sure enough, gave myself quite a surprise when the first one blew off the rim.

    Took them back and complained and the head of the cycle department said something along the lines of me being an idiot so I asked him to fit them. He put the tube and tyre on and got it to about 30PSI and said 'there you go'.

    I suggested that it was too low to ride at that pressure and so he kept pumping. When the tyre eventually let go it went with an almighty bang that sounded like a gunshot and echoed around and about the large, aluminium warehouse unit that was (and still is) Halfords Epsom branch with the whole shop diving for cover.

    He refunded me.

  • Correct, the tractor stuff. 2.5l of sealant for £12. Ppl on Singletrack have been using it for years.

  • See the 1.25l bottle is around £12 so diluting 50:50? Is that to make it last longer before drying up?

  • It doesn’t dry up like the others. The dilution is to get it moving around the tyre better.

  • All Muc-Off sealants and lubricants are generally shite

  • Having bought and applied the wet lube once this is a really nice thing to say on a Sunday evening. How do they get away with it?

  • I use it on the 3 gang lawn tractor at work and it has sealed a rip in the side wall I could get my finger in well enough to get the tractor off the pitch. Since then I’ve used it on one of my bikes and so far I’ve not had an issue.once the big bottle of sealant I have is empty they are all getting the good (free) stuff from work.

    My first foray into tubeless was with Muc-Off, completely failed, and they've been sitting on a shelf since with me in a huff.

    Time to try again.

    I wasted a couple on a holed tyre that wouldn't seal and then found out they seem to be out of stock everywhere. Double whammy! I did end up finding some of my spare packets so I've got some more now but I hope they sort it out soon.

    Reading the above, am I right in thinking that to run a tubeless setup you need to have:
    a workshop
    a compressor
    new tools

    Otherwise, you will need to rely on a bike shop for maintenance

    I've somehow managed to use tubeless bicycle tyres for 20 years with none of those things. Some set-ups need an air tank.

  • James, it was reading the first post that made me ask this .

  • I've got a slow puncture on a pretty worn tyre. Been losing air with the bike just sat there. Topped up sealant as it was low, and that seemed to help. Bike sat there for a good few days with seemingly no air-loss.

    Come today I go for a ~1hr ride. By the time I'm done I've probably lost around 20-30psi. I've identified the only holes on the tyre where I could see bubbling or feel the air leaking from. They're miniscule pinholes that cannot be seen with your eyes. I would've thought sealant could handle this no problemo.

    My question is (more so for the non-sidewall one), why on earth aren't they sealing and what can I do to address this. It's getting frustrating.

  • Did you give the sealant a good shake before adding it? Sometimes if its been on the shelf for a while then heavier more active part can sink to bottom of the bottle and then only the lighter runnier sealant goes in the tyre, but this can usually be seen as it can spray out a bit more, but sounds like you cant see/feel any sealant around the pin holes?

    If the tyre is old, is the bead still ok on it? Might be escaping from the bead when riding, and doesnt when bike is stationary?

  • Thanks for the tips. When I topped up the second time, the yoghurt looked sufficiently speckled with bits, but you're right I didn't shake. It's a fairly fresh bottle though that I've been topping up other wheelsets with.

    I can see and feel the sealant at the pin holes, but there's still air loss. Maybe it's coming from somewhere else now too. The bead looks good, the valve is good too.
