• Good work.

I can't be arsed waiting for it to be approved to get the requirements doc from them.

Kajsa mentioned in one of her blogs that the info pack from Guinness was 36 pages long. They obviously need to get together with the UCI to bulk that out a bit.

  • The argument about people knowing he's not at home and then burgling him seems a little contrived. He will be out all day everyday riding. He's moving between countries/hemispheres for large parts of his attempt. U wouldn't need live tracking know he's not in...

  • I think it was more about it leading them to his home. However, if you think he's such a sure bet then a bit of social engineering and simply hanging around his home town for a couple of days are going to lead you to his house.

  • d. A loud start and finish signal recognized by all participants must be used.

Well... I just hope he used a sufficiently loud starting signal.

    • Video evidence of the entire record attempt, from start to finish that enables us to confirm the measurement achieved, that the guidelines have been adhered to and verify the details provided by the independent witnesses.

Also 8760hours worth of video footage is probably more arduous/expensive to collect and curate than an automatic live tracker...

  • Is Kajsa UMCA approved?

  • I think it was more about it leading them to his home. However, if you think he's such a sure bet then a bit of social engineering and simply hanging around his home town for a couple of days are going to lead you to his house.

Or just look at his Garmin Connect uploads where he doesn't have a privacy zone defined.

  • Is Kajsa UMCA approved?

No, Guinness. So the requirements for them to verify the record can't be as strict as suggested (videoing the entire thing).

Kajsa has specifically said that she can't draft anyone though.

  • The argument about people knowing he's not at home and then burgling him seems a little contrived.

A perfectly reasonable worries, which can be remedy by simply starting further away from his place of resident.

  • Also 8760hours worth of video footage

I don't think you would need to video people sleeping. It's not like they're going to need to verify when you're not riding.

  • If you were to start every day at home and skip out on recording the first and last 500m, you would loose 365km from your record attempt. A bit silly to do that.

  • OK, so halve it. Still a stupid amount of video. 6 months non-stop watching.

Elsewhere I saw that for events longer than an hour Guinness only require 2 minutes per hour to be recorded, as well as the point that people start/stop. So that reduces it down to ~150 hours. At 6GB/hour (for 720p) you could fit that on a 2TB HDD.

  • SPOT trackers can do privacy zones too, but the sticking point is that UMCA seemingly require the tracker to be public, but Bruce doesn't like this.

  • For longer duration attempts the video requirement is lessened.

ie. one of mine requires something like 2min of video per hour for 24hrs.

  • but Bruce doesn't like this.

How did Steven did this? and Kurt?

Kurt posted on Bruce's FB page (my bold):-

Keep going with your attempt! I'm sorry that you couldn't work it out with UMCA as I was the person that asked you to do this and you tried. Thank you. As stated in the UMCA announcement the phone app was a problem since it doesn't provide a history to compare against your garmin which is used to verify your route. Your explanation of fear for safety or property is not really valid, both Steven Abraham and I did it without a problem. People will watch out for you if you let them. BTW how are you able to keep up with all of Guiness's reporting requirements, or were you able to get them to modify them for the month record. Also you should see if you can concurrently do a new month record because you will be averaging 1000K more each month than your current record, no reason not to put the miles to work twice. I do fear that if you felt these costs were high and didn't have time to handle these tasks or have someone to help you do these things that you neither have the funds nor support necessary to complete this challenge. I believe there are enough people out there who would support you and help you raise funds. At some point you need to let go of your pride and let people help you. It may have been the hardest part of HAMR for me.

  • Good find, thank.

I genuinely thought it's a valid reason especially being in London, where there's claim that people are using Strava to find bicycles in London*.

Steven and Kurt doesn't live in London.

*I'm not sure how concrete this is, whether it's valid or simply overblown like many thing that appear worse than it is.

  • Bruce's easiest option is to suck it up, accept some donations, buy a SPOT tracker, join the UMCA and negotiate his way back in to HAMR (including maybe getting them to accept the rides in January so far, the UMCA might even be willing to do that).

I think his Guinness record (if he completes the year) will just end up just like his week and month records, just a claim that he has the record, and not listed on Guinness' site. Note that the week and month totals he has claimed are less than what Steve and Kurt both achieved during HAMR, and everyone was eclipsed by Tommy (if his records are to be trusted).

  • Sadly Steve abandoned his attempt yesterday :0(

  • Just read about that :-(

  • Tougher mentally to give up? He sounds bitterly disappointed.

  • Sad for him but he's put in a hell of an effort. Hope he has a good rest and then works out what he wants to do next. I'd gladly support him again if he decides to have another go in the future.

  • Massive respect for what he achieved against set-backs, it's just one of those things

  • Greetings folks,

The journalist Zoe Williams regularly walks past my workplace and if I see her we chat. She wrote an article about him in the Guardian earlier in 2015.

When he came a cropper with moped-gate, by chance I bumped in to Zoe and explained what had happened to him how he was back on a trike peddling one legged around a track in Milton Keynes, but hoped to continue... She said how amazing that was and whatever happened he had 'the moral victory'.

Hearing the news, that phrase comes back to me...

What a great bloke, what an amazing effort...

    Peace and love,
    Tim

  • If he plans on giving it another go, I'd be pleased to donate again - bloody tough bugger - he is certainly made of the right stuff!

Well done and thanks to Rive Gauche, too, for his endurance in providing the summaries !
