  • I can't profess to be an expert on this, but it doesn't seem to be going very well. Doesn't he need to average over 200 miles a day?

  • Doesn't he need to average over 200 miles a day?

Average yes. But that works out best as slightly under 200 miles in the winter, and more than 200 miles in the spring/summer/autumn.

[EDIT] Look here: http://gicentre.org/oytt/ and see the sinewave profile of Tommy's 1936 record (fell behind the average pace in the first 4 months, picked up as the warmth arrived and his fitness improved, and peaked late October with a fall in the last 2 months of the year).

Steve's attempt that restarted in August makes it all a bit trickier to compare, but if you uncheck the 'Common start times' box you'll see Steve is currently ~1100 miles behind Tommy's record pace, but Steve's plan is for a more even approach and he'll have the benefit of a lot more fitness for the Jan-August months of the new attempt.

  • Ta. Yeah I get the pacing thing, but since the re-start, to be 1100 miles behind already seems more than he'd want - eg already more than a month of an extra 30 miles / day. At the pace he rides there's going to be a maximum daily distance that he can keep up even in the May-July period.

Still in awe of what he's doing though.

  • My 2p worth:
Tommy godwin proved what was humanly possible way back in 1939.
Kurt will surpass this, but not by a significant margin.
    Steve won't .

  • Bruce should hopefully claim it back for the UK (well, NZ, but he lives here) next year.

  • I certainly wouldn't have any issue with it if he was but dya think Godwin was in some way supplementing himself? Amphetamines, brandy etc? Clearly he had an extraordinary physique and metabolism and one which has proved in some ways timeless.

  • I don't think anyone could function that effectively for a whole year on amphetamines. but if anyone is willing to sponsor me i'll give it a go.

  • Haha! I'm in.

"..and with that, they raced to the death"

  • I was initially pessimistic looking at the those graphs but the thing that swung it round for me was looking at Steve's original start last time. By the time of his accident (almost 3 months in) he was ~2700 miles ahead of Tommy's pace and hadn't buried himself. I think he'll be pretty steady over the winter and start the new year a maximum of 500 miles behind Tommy, possibly even ahead (he has a much flatter graph for the colder months than Tommy) if the weather is kind.

Also, click the 'schedules' radio button on the graphing and see that in Steve's original attempt he was tracking his upper goal quite well, if he'd been able to keep to this he would have added 12000 miles to the record.

So, as far as my predictions, first Kurt will surpass it by ~1000 miles and be the new record holder.

Steve will be at most 500 to 0 miles behind at the end of the year (compared to if Tommy had started on the same date) and then proceed to smash it for the rest of his 'year' and add at least 6000 miles to the record and then be the new HAMR record holder.

There will then be lots of bollocks about Steve's restarted attempt not being a 'real' year attempt as he didn't start on Jan 1st and finish on Dec 31st, but unless Kurt piles on the miles soon he'll have a similar problem as missed a bunch of days as he didn't start until Jan 10th.

2016 is a leap year but the record is for 365 consecutive days, so he doesn't get a free day compared to everyone else.

It would, of course, have been nice for his original plan to work, but I think his effort will be considered all the more remarkable because (a) the re-start wasn't his fault, (b) most lesser riders would have packed it in there and then, (c) he was back on the trike/bike rather quickly, and (d) it'll be interesting to see how many miles he ends up doing in total across the two attempts. You never know, perhaps he'll keep riding after that and set completely insane new records over 150,000 miles or more (thinking that he wouldn't get the 100,000 mile record over Tommy Godwin)? Will Kurt Searvogel keep riding at the end of his year? #armchairrider

  • 100,00 mile

    here, you dropped a 0...

    ;p

  • From Facebook. Steve has lost quite a few miles due a new diet. Hope it works out. 50 miles a day is a lot to catch up.

Steve's currently in the middle of a dietary transition to a more nutritionally balanced, fat burning, metabolic diet.
Normally this transition requires complete abstinence from exercise for 2 weeks, but Steve's had to compromise by riding fewer miles. It's mentally and physically tough for him - and he's lost 5kg in weight - in less than 2 weeks. But we believe it will be better for the long term.
    Keep going Steve...

  • This is a bit worrying. It is so much easier (obviously) to lose 50 miles than gain 50 miles.

I hope it is a mild winter

  • Steve seems to have stopped turning the Garmin off at night, which is adding extra distance as the bike sits in his house.

I've not bothered to work out how much yet, but I'm now no longer really trusting the Strava data as much as I did. Previously, what Strava showed for Steve was what the UMCA showed, where as Kurt lost a mile or so a week from what I assume was GPS drift.
