I guess you are all about endurance rather than speed these days.

I want to ride a 30mph TT this year. That's going pretty quick by average cyclists standards.
On my commute I'm all about getting to work alive whilst recovering from or preparing for a training session.

I want to do a 300 mile 12hr, doesn't mean it's gonna happen.

This year my target is a 3.5 hour time for 26.2 miles, which is harder than you'd think when you remove the bicycle from the list of equipment available.

Are you shoes midfoot specific or were they modified for the job? Is the attachment point absolutely flat where the cleats fit? Could it be that the cleats are not completely flush to the sole of the shoe putting extra strain on the c clip? At the rate you get through cleats might you consider custom midfoot shoes?
Or could you just learn to unclip with the other foot and save 50% of the wear on your left cleat?

I tried to get custom shoes but the German guy famous for making them wasn't much use when it came to it so I used normal shoes that have been drilled.
I think it's the fact it was the first pair done and the sole is not flat and/or flexing too much (plastic, not carbon) so they give up too soon.
Might be time to bin them and use my other pair for commuting. Or just buy a longer fixie skidder frame and go with no foot retention :)
I hate unclipping with the other foot.

I can trackstand quite well thanks but these days I enjoy the rests that lights offer me.
Your setting a bad example. :-)
[Nothing like seeing people on city bikes and pedalecs wearing trainers wobbling at a crossing holding onto a traffic light...] -

Clipping in and out is fine.. Until they break.

New to speedplays. Just set up some new pedals and cleats. I have set them with max float but there is also some rocking side to side ie I can slightly roll my ankle left to right. Not much but noticabley more than on my last pedal system (which had no rocking) is this normal or have i set up wrongly?

Float - now in 3D
-
• #716
Just called speed play, shouldn't rock, not sure what's going on with my setup...
-
• #717
mine rock when the cleats are worn - maybe bring your float back in a bit and see what that does?
tbh, even when my cleats are worn, I don't really notice it when I'm riding other than when I'm jiggling my feet about to check my speedplays aren't rocking.

• #718
Yeah that's what's weird is the cleats are new and pedals are in perfect condition...

So I had a good look at the pedals/ cleats. There is defo a couple of mm rocking on both. The base plates look level, the shims look like they are filling underside. The pedals don't look worn so I'm at a loss. I guess all I can do is buy new second set of pedals and see if that's any better.

Check the cleat is really mounted flat. Any deformation and they rock. Also check that the bow-ties are still good and not loose.

@EdwardZ @MechaMorgan thanks for the replies.
I have found the problem. I am using a 3hole adaptor and the front screw slightly sits proud of the plate. Hence the cleat is wobbling around on that rather than siting flush. Its a tiny bit but enough. Tried tightening screw, using shorter screw, raising plate, no good. The plate is dead flat. I'm using Sidi, I think my only option is to file the screw a touch!

My left cleat seems to have a mm vertical play all of a sudden. Its a massive effort to get clicked in. Then theres this annoying vertical play every pedal stroke.
New cleat time?

All of a sudden? Check if anything broke or or anything is loose.. Check also that the bearings are OK.. Speedplay uses pretty tiny bearings that are prone to problems-- easy enough, however, to replace.
New cleat time?
Check if it is not something "wrong" on the body--- they do also wear out.

I rebuilt the cleat.
Its bolted without adaptor to a non flat sole. Bit worried I havent shimmed it perfectly.

Any thoughts of using any old Grease to squeeze into frogs vs teflon one?
