    1. Dry your bikes.
    2. Surface rust ain't no thang. I'll break the pedals before rust is an issue.
  • Sponsorship is the pro way.

    1. Ain't no-one got time for that
    2. Stains your over socks, makes you look slovenly
  • I'd assumed Speedplay would use a proprietary nozzle/union with the pedal.

    This not being the case, I had a browse and this looks to be suitable:

    • conical nozzle (best fit to pedal);
    • short, rigid delivery tube (less likely to snap and doesn't need to be held in place);
    • push to dispense (keeps the gun engaged with the pedal/one-handed operation);
    • for bulk grease (use grease supplied in any form, not just a tube);
    • £6.25 including shipping.

    I have that one, works fine with speedplays

  • I use the "Finish Line" gun. Works very well. I use an old tube of their crappy grease that I filled with good stuff! Seems to work much better than either syringes-- I use a large syringe to refill the empty grease tube--- or some of my other grease guns--- including the one pictured above by Scilly.Suffolk (which I also have). The pedals need quite a bit of pressure to get the grease in-- if the pedals are really filthy I've found it easiest to just open them up.

    Looks similar to the "Finish Line". Problem with all these is they need a grease in a special sized tube. Fine if you use 9/16" threaded tubes. I don't-- my Kluber greases come in Kg cans.

  • Drunkenly set up speedplays last night. Did a long ride today. None of the usual knee pain. Very pleased.

  • I bought the gun I linked to above and it's great!

    Took a little while to figure out how to use it: you need to unscrew the end (where you fill with grease), pull out the nozzle and it telescopes out into three sections.

    Heavy duty construction and the conical nozzle is a good fit. The pumping action also keeps it firmly engaged.

    Lube/10: would not need to buy again.

  • Before I go and spend top money on custom speedplays, are there any cheaper alternatives? I can't go for cheap titanium aftermarket spindels due to massive amounts of fat accumulated all over me body. These have rider weight limit of 200lbs/90kg. With bag I exceed that limit by about 15kg. Arebthere any other options for long spindle pedals about?

  • Longer spindel Speedplays are not custom. They come that way. Cost a few dollar$ extra over the stock lengths. Speedplay also sell spindel kits but they are a bit expensive. Talk to your LBS.

  • They are custom cos that's how they call em http://www.ubyk.co.uk/m/product.php?CI_ID=21480. And they cost twice as much, if not more, than standard. Axles on their own come at about £100. Why no aftermarket chromo or SS? Aftermarket Titanium cost about 50 quids. Even if they charged the same for SS that would still be a bargain.

  • Chances are the aftermarket Ti will be fine. Depends how you ride I Guess. If you're jumping curbs etc. Then maybe not.

    I had the opposite problem. Wanted short Ti. But have found aftermarket ones to come up long.

    If you want longer axles, and free float. You could look at the Keywin system. Like mine. Pain to Clip into compared to speedplay though.

    Titanium (Ti6Q2), 110kg weight limit, US made and available in all lengths... even +13.3mm (looks like a tad longer than Speedplay's 65mm). At under 85 Euro seems a good upgrade for CrMo bodies. They even sell the pedals complete and tuned to 140g for 250.

  • Nice one, thanks!

  • Anothe C-spring bites the dust in my commuter shoes. This one had already snapped at one end but hung on for ages until a traffic light unclip not quite clip in broke it in half.

    I'm thinking of using the other side c-spring and flipping it. I'm sure Speedplay say never to do stuff like this but fucked if I'm buying another £40 set of cleats just for the one side that keeps breaking.

  • stop commuting on speedplays?

  • No.

    Midfoot.

    Specificity.

    Blah blah

  • I might have a some C clips from some old cleats somewhere if you need one

  • I've broken a few now so have quite a few right-hand cleats to attack but thanks for the offer.
