  • Does anyone tour with speedplay frogs?

I've atacs right now but think frogs would give a wider platform for better comfort.

How do the frogs compare with normal speedplay for use? As I like my speedplay but they'd get dirty even with keep on covers touring.

I use Frogs a lot, with Sidi Dragons, so the pedal platform is totally stable.
I have toured pretty extensively with them.
The clipping in is a bit subtle, you need to make sure you have properly engaged, it is though possible to pedal away from stationary with the pedal partly engaged and clip in properly once up to speed, which I quite like. The infinite float is lovely, your feet and knee alignment is guaranteed perfect. (although I use zeros on my road bikes, I haven't used any of them for so long I forget what they are like)

  • I've been riding frogs for about seven years now on the road bike and the fixed commuter.

The free float is great for my weird turn out knees and I have never had unclipping issues.

Pricey but they work for me.

I also like that they are black.

  • Broke another left hand side c spring the other day.

That's three to none on the right.

They need to increase the strength of these things. Jokes.

To make matters worse the knobs have changed the cleat design so my replacements don't work with the extender plate.

    SPD SL ftw!

  • Hippy is so fat he keeps braking pedals.

  • Hippy is so strong he keeps breaking pedals.

I think it's just the new V2 screws that aren't compatible, although their website is far from clear on the subject. Speedplay do seem to have a penchant for making things unnecessarily complicated.

  • Sorry, I wasn't clear during my rant. Yes, it's the V2 screws that are incompatible with the extender plate(s). Of course, I don't have any new screws for extender plates hanging around, I mean, who does? Not even bike shops because the UK distributors can't sort their shit out.

    SPD-SL ftw

  • I broke right side C spring yesterday on the way to a ride .. first time I broke a cleat. To be fair I am using them for last 3k+ miles and I take my right foot out. Can I just buy these or do I have to buy whole new pair of cleats?

  • Another pedals for you!

  • It's not the pedals that are the issue - it's the cleats.

The round black spring continually fails.

  • Can't you effectively make your own version of the new Roubaix pedal by removing all the plastic from the current Speedplays though?

  • You can't, they'll file a lawsuit against you.

  • Yeah they like filing lawsuits thats one thing.

  • Thread dredge, yup I have fitted the Northwave adapters on Northwave shoes (no idea if you get them separate) they were slightly less mechanically sound IMHO than the regular 3 to 4 hole adapters.

  • How do you keep braking them hippy? I've only ever had one c ring come out and stay clipped into the pedal and that was on a pair of cleats where part of the metal plate had cracked off and were well past their sell by date.

I have a love hate relationship with them.

Love the pedals themselves, how easy they are to adjust, the fact that you replace most parts (its not cheap though) and how long the cleats last if you look after them (usually 10,000k) .
Hate: maintenance, fragile cleats, stupid design which means you walk on the screw heads, need to carry cleat covers at all times (how slippy are the cleats at first?!), inability to use with toe straps at the track, expense, and the fact that every time I need to put new cleats on I have use a bloody dremel to file a slot into the old screw heads.

  • Get some keep on covers.

Or put shoegoo on the metal.

  • They don't stand up to non-trackstanding commuting in London.

  • Oh!

  • Unclip side has gone through three cleats compared to no breaks on the other side. Properly installed. Properly maintained.

  • Learn to trackstand ;)
    Stabilisers?

    But that's annoying.

    this works for me...

@hippy you need to resign to the fact you are a kit destroyer and not a gentle lover...

Yup - keep on covers FTW

  • I commute on Speedplays Hippy, with no issues - what are you doing to them?!

  • Ordered keep on kovers. Still think they make you look you you have hamburgers on your shoes though..

  • My cleats lasted for around 5k miles with keep on kovers and London commuting before the C spring snapped into two from the leg that I take out when stopped. Since I have been using those covers the cleats were in pristine condition, if I could get just the C spring it would've been a cheap repair.

Maintenance is just clean and lube right?
