  • Dan I'm surprised you managed to ignore all the font and concentrate on the "buy now" button.

  • I know Velosport in Putney sell them in person. Don't know abotu elsewhere in london.

  • My last pair of cleats lasted about a year of a mix of commuting, track and fixie skidding. The C spring didn't snap and I didn't give them any kind of maintenance, had to saw the bolts out though as I didn't use cleat covers either.
Now I have just put on a new pair and have keep on kovers, so much nicer. Comtat Cycles near Old Street sells them so you don't have to trek down to Putney.

  • I can trackstand quite well thank you. I choose not to do it most of the time these days because I'm either too tired to be bothered or surrounded by wobbly douchebags that I don't feel like taking a hit for.

  • It can't be me though - otherwise the right hand side would be fucked as well. My two other pairs of shoes are fine too. It's just the foot downs with 200+ traffic light commutes.
I have actually started trackstanding more just because I'm so sick of paying £40 to replace one broken fucking c-spring.

  • Riding a lot more than you?

  • They should sell spare c-springs or make stronger ones for people like me.

  • Have you (or anyone) contacted them directly about this?

  • Via twitter. They've never responded.

  • Thats shit; lets try again!

Or maybe a better approach would be picture of C spring and text saying: Finally sick of broken C springs made my own for £5; might try selling it ;)

    Their lawyers would take notice.

  • @ amey Clean and dry lube the cleats. The pedals need grease pushed through them with a grease gun every 2-3,000 k's.

  • From you - I can take that. You ride more than anyone I know.

  • I still have all the broken cleats for when I start a class action against them..

Actually thought about having my own springs made too but don't really know where to start so that's not go far.

  • I used to. I recently quit the nasty habit. Oooh Central Line how I love thee.

  • @mdcc_tester maybe?

  • ALL OF OUR PRAYERS HAVE BEEN HEARD!!!

In other news, I'm going to have 2 sets of titanium spindles from ti-spindles for sale, forumenger is bringing one set over for me and I thought others may be interested. Standard length replacement, for zero chro-moly, that will save 59grams over standard chromolys. Dammit has done this here so you have a full tutorial. Price should be around £42.50

  • Unclip side has gone through three cleats compared to no breaks on the other side. Properly installed. Properly maintained.

That is normal with other cleat systems too... even my favorite (but no longer made or supported) Time Equipe pedals with its brass cleat-- the front alu or plastic bit is just for guiding the block of brass.

The problem with the Speedplay Zero-- other than the feeling that the "cleats" are horribly overpriced--- is that the cleat component is really the pedal and the "Speedplay cleat" is really the retention mechanism and directly exposed. Speedplay Zero cleats seem to last longer--- and work better-- when combined with the optional steel "sole protector". The clip seems to really also demand lube so a bit of Krytox and wax goes a long way to extending their life. Some Teflon spray is also usefull--- even with the Time pedals I used to spray the stainless steel plate from time to time with some Teflon.

Looks cool... Not sure about the plug.. But without it.. What is that.. 3 packages of Black Sugru? :-)

  • None of my other cleat systems ever suffered anything like this. I already do everything I can to preserve the cleats - I rarely walk in them, use cleat covers anyway and lube them with the teflon shit they recommend. Snapping C-Springs isn't a result of poor maintenance, it's because the springs are not up to the job of heavy use.

  • it's because the springs are not up to the job of heavy users

    ftfy

  • Shimano and Time were

  • Agree. The Speedplay "spring" is not designed to last. It is disposible. With Time, for example, it was a non-replaceable component so designed to last. The Time pedals went the way of the dodo because weightweenies won. Speedplay are lighter.

  • But you can't by just Speedplay springs. They insist you replace the whole overpriced cleat.

  • Thats shit; lets try again!

This is Speedplay we're talking about, that's how they are.
