It was like that for most of the final week of the 2012 Giro.

I'm not really sure the helicopters add that much when they're just hovering over one group on a mountain stage like this though. If they've got a camera bike on each main group then surely they can pull the helicopter back to help with the overall picture

Often not, the pictures from the camera bikes are often relayed via the helicopter. So no helicopter, or helicopter too far back, no pictures from the ground.

As with many things in life the solution is probably autonomous drones.
