I kind of agree about the really steep climbs taking the 'racing' element out of stages, as it just comes down to survival and power / weight. I think 'smaller' tours put them on for commercial and spectator interest more than anything else.

I don't see the problem in including them but at the end of a three week stage race, there's probably only a handful of riders capable of putting an attack in.
Quintana could have attacked if he'd had to and its the sort of gradient that Purito loves.

Ex doper makes up 3mins 26. Hard for me to get excited about TBH.
Just noticed that Svein Tuft has gone from 1st after the opening stage to second last (155th) today. Anyone ever gone from leader to lantern rouge in a race before?

the peloton looking very polite and organised. is it like in TdF where competing is considered rude on the last day or something?

That pelmet was also wearing the world champion's jersey. Which makes him a total cockwad.

I thought the Mountain ITT was even more of a farce for the same reasons. I suppose the do-you-do-you-not change bikes thing added a dash of interest.

I get the theory but it doesn't wash. The Vuelta climbs last year were surprisingly awesome and yesterday the entire top 16 was made of a mix of climbers and rouleurs who broke away and rode tactically.
...survival and power / weight.
Add timetrialing (and luck) and that is GC racing in grand tours. -
