Should Scotland be an independent country?

  • I’m not sick of it . The sooner it happens the better.

    This

  • As someone who lives in England and sees zero chance of anything but a Tory government of talentless, venal bigots for the next decade I’d grasp independence with both hands. It might be hard, sometimes terribly so- but you’d have a chance to build a better country that’s not ruled by cunts from Eton.

  • On that note, I overheard two older men talking to each other in the park a couple of days ago- one was genuinely angry at Boris for his incompetence, then the other chimed in with “yes, yes- but there’s no one else!”

  • “yes, yes- but there’s no one else!”

I thought about this after watching that dead donkeys' Boris' C19 failings thing on twitter.

Despite my reservations about Corbyn, I do think at least he would have given it 100% time and focus. Not to mention less time and focus on gimmicks and spin.

  • TBF lots of people held similar views on leaving the EU.

  • Where to start, I can only speak for myself here,Scotland hasn’t voted for a Tory government in 60 years yet we constantly have them imposed on us in an unequal Union. Labour took the Scots votes for granted and with every lurch to the right, abandoning their principles along the way, lost support.
Labour have become Tory light, not what they were founded as, look at the Labour benches in the unelected HoLs, a disgrace. We have no right to criticise government anywhere in the world while we still accept this anachronism.
Can anyone honestly say the name of the leaders of either of the 2 major opposition parties in Scotland without Googling? And no, Baroness Davidson is not the correct answer.
We had that clusterfuck Johnson arrive yesterday for a photo op, that went well , between him and the Beano character JRM referring to the first minister as moanalot, they are the best recruiters the SNP could hope for. Charles and Camilla arrived while he was positive with Covid at the start of the pandemic, entourage in tow, potentially infecting an entire community. The idiot son and Kate Middleton arrived not long back on a train wearing tartan scarves and a tartan dress, Hussar! Who is advising these people.
Brexit, Scotland voted against it as did Northern Ireland, despite the £1billion bung to the DUP, that’s not working out well either. Freedom of movement, been a great thing for years, gone.
No one should be forced to stay in an unhappy, unequal union, this one has had its day, time to move on.
    And breathe 😂

  • ^ all of this

  • What would actually happen with the UK nuke program if Scotland left?

Defence budget is around 40 billion per year, of which it appears that 6% is maintenance for the nuclear program, so peanuts in relative terms - but I imagine that re-housing everything in (say) Cornwall would cost a fair amount. Could we just tie the subs up at the docks in Portsmouth, keep the nukes in a warehouse?

  • But more voted against Independence last time, do we just play this game of keeping voting for it until you get your own way.

I voted against brexit but it happened and thats what happens in a democratic vote you down always get what you want.

A part of me wants Scotland to become independent and when its a massive fuck up, if they produce another white paper like last time i'll be voting the same again. Right now its hard to believe the SNP could run a piss up in a brewery never mind run an independent country.

She should be concentrating more on sorting the pandemic and less on Indy 2.

  • Johnson saying it's not the time to be discussing a referendum with the pandemic going on, but happy to plough through with Brexit. Johnson also wanting independence from the EU, but not happy to grant the same to Scotland.

Sounds like it could be a shit-show to sort out, but I think Scotland should go for it and I'd wish them all the best.

  • But more voted against Independence last time, do we just play this game of keeping voting for it until you get your own way.

Yeah but that was on the basis Scotland were going to be part of the EU right?

    Sort of got shafted there.

  • Yeah but personally I think EU is a sinking ship, they have made it incredibly awkward for us so that hopefully no other country trys to leave.

The full thing is bombscare and like this you'll never make everyone happy.

  • maybe, but so is the UK.

  • Yeah but personally I think EU is a sinking ship

That's an interesting comment - what are you basing it on?

  • Also, did the EU actually make it that awkward? They could have just not bothered negotiating with the UK at all. In some ways they've been quite generous.

  • The EU looked after their own interests, ultimately, and have secured what they wanted. We got turned over, but that was always going to happen - the FT piece on this is excellent.

  • they have made it incredibly awkward for us so that hopefully no other country trys to leave

Have they though? Really? That's the Tory press line

I think we made it incredibly awkward for them by voting in the worst Apprentice candidates imaginable to government

  • Prob cant read it as I don't subscribe, but got a link?

  • run a piss up in a brewery

Organising a piss up in a brewery is not easy.

  • Course they do, they have dug the knife in deep on this.

I mean the vaccine shambles thats been doing the round the last few days, that doesn't make them look like spoilt brats at all.

I think we made it incredibly awkward for them by voting in the worst Apprentice candidates imaginable to government

    LOLLLLLL

  • Nobody has mentioned the inquiry yet... Our own wee watergate..

Edit to add... the latest nugget

    https://news.sky.com/story/snp-faces-fresh-claims-that-high-ranking-party-figures-conspired-against-former-leader-alex-salmond-12201748

  • The word is she'll have to resign if it all comes out, but she's the most teflon politician ive ever seen. Just look at previous stuff, nothing sticks and theres an answer for everything(This does cover most politicians)

  • Careful there... superinjunction

  • Every 4 years we have a general election in which many people change their minds so that argument doesn’t hold water.
By she I assume you mean Nicola Sturgeon, she won’t be there forever, and after independence vote for the party you think are best for the country, at the moment it’s the SNP but that won’t be forever either.

  • Precisely. I don't get why people assume the SNP will stay in power in an Independent Scotland

I mean, they probably will, but not without winning votes
