  • no, I think there are still spaces available. Go check on their website.
and yes, if you pay, the entry is guaranteed.

  • Looks like I will need clipsnstraps for this.

Any advice on suitable period correct pedals for my 1986 Campag equipped Vitus?

  • These ones dredged from an old sales thread:

Some Suntour Sprint or whatever might be cheaper though

  • So let me get this straight. I can stick a 90's group and wheels on a pre-87 frame as long as brake cables are properly routed?

  • why would you want to do that? it's about riding on vintage bikes innit?

  • Well I just want to do it. And I want to bring my kid and given I only have one '80's group-set (which I'm using) and I'd rather not fork out another £200 odd to equip a bike she may not dig all that much. Anyway it's only 3 years younger.
Speaking of which, does anyone have any experience of day-hire at the event itself?Maybe the Italian event is comparable. How much might that set me back?

Maybe email the organisers and enquire?

  • So long as you don't turn up with brifters I think they'll be relaxed. It's the first event and they won't want to scare people off by being too picky. Just make sure you come full of the spirit of yesteryear and dressed the part.

  • Let's see some pics of what you plan to ride.

What I plan to ride isn't ready yet, but today I got what I plan to ride in, all the way from China. No doubt various children were harmed in the manufacturing process, I'm not sure how else they can make and send me a decent quality pair of bibs and a jersey for £19 :

The bike I'm using is a Vitus 979, so I figured I may as well do a full Sean Kelly tribute :

    Like the kit.

Can you spill the beans on the website where this came from?

  • Just eBay.

Get the same stuff. We can be kit buddies.

  • Is there any local knowledge here on the surfaces?

I’m restoring my bike from the early eighties. I had the frame built with a really short wheelbase and I think the widest rear tyre I can accommodate is 23mm. I need to replace the tyres and can get the tyres below for £10 each anyone any ideas how they would last on the route surfaces, doing the 100 miles.

On another note, I don’t really remember coloured tyres on road bikes back in the early ‘80s does anyone know what sort of period a coloured tyre with a gumwall would fit.

  • GPX files released today on the website.
Here's the 100 mile. Over 2000m of elevation!

  • They've chosen the slow way up Winnat's... Eurgh.
Think I'm signed up, can't remember. Will have to test the route.

  • Here's the medium route:

  • Medium route? Why would we need to see that?

I've just got a 36T front ring and dodgy £12 14-28T cassette to fit to the Vitus. Im all over dem hillz. 40rpm and 5mph ftw.

  • Not sure I'll be all over those hills with my Sturmey Acher 4 speed FW hub.
Just working out my ratios using Sheldons 'Vintage and Antique' calculator.
I regularly ride that distance on a normal road bike but am I being 'optimistic' that I can make it round this course with the following ratios?

  • Joking aside, I've just had my first proper look at the route and it's going to be very tough indeed.

The website puts the ascent at 2800m - 9000ft.

We have friends nearby and I went out for 40 miles and 4000ft recently on my crabon bike with a compact chain set and 12-28T cassette and the thought of doing over twice that on an old bike is pretty daunting.

It looks like you can bottle it and switch to the 55 miler part way round tho and there are plenty of food stops.

  • The route is absolutely lovely though. Some of the best riding up here- so you'll enjoy the pain!
I'm struggling on account of bike rules currently. Hopefully will sort that out soon.

  • Any idea what the off road bits are like eyebrows? Will I be ok on 23C Paselas?

  • Just weighed my Eroica steed. 11.9kg. Thought it would be lighter.

  • @hefty- not all of it, but a lot seems to be on the Tissington Trail Which you'd be fine on, I'll probably be running 25s or 28s.

  • ^ Cool beans, thanks.

I've spent plenty on the bike already to make it eligible so swapping the Paselas off my fixeh commuter onto it will be a welcome saving.

  • Signed up today. 70 squid including camping (and you stick your car next to the tent) seems pretty cheap/easy

  • Derp, anyone fancy a £55 entry, I doubt I'll be able to make it now :(
