  • A pre 87 bike with those gearz?

  • Anyone want my pin so they can get entry for £55? I was really looking forward to this, but a whole load of life shit has just hit an already shitty fan and it doesn't look like I will be able to justify the cost.

  • ^ pm'd.

  • And it's gone!

  • Will Shimano AX groups be permitted? the brake levers cables are internal and will not be outside the handlebars.

  • If its 'Italian' rules then it doesn't really matter what you run so long as you have downtube shifters and brake levers with the cables exiting the top so they arc 'heroically' back over the handlebars.

You can run a compact chainset, modern derailleurs and brakes to your heart's content so long as those cables are right.

My mate Chris was DQ'd on the line in Italy and had his number removed and his card taken because his brake cables were routed under the bar tape. He still rode.it

  • The official rules are here. Gears can be modified due to course difficulty but pre 1987 frame, down tube shifters only, cable routing outside of bar tape...

  • Yep, pretty much the same.

I've ridden SPDs using Shimano's PD-A520s and SH-MP66L shoes for the last two years and got away with it. I've tried to find retro cycling shoes that will fit my Fred Flinstone feet, which will be suitable for a bit of walking on Tuscany's strade bianche, but have baulked at shelling out for Vittoria or Quoc Pham's. Plus. I hate toe clips with a passion because I can never get them to fit right.

  • I just got my PIN number through. I thought I'd missed out somehow but they emailed and said there was a glitch on their system, that they had found my original submission and Hey Presto!

  • I hope that your tent doesn't have to be pre 1987 to get in the campsite!

This is hilarious. I mean the zealous application of rules, not your mate's disqualification.

  • I saw numerous Italians (...) clearly outside the rules last edition. I think it helps being Italian.

One even on a Viner carbon bike with 9-speed Dura Ace brifters... he finished and got his bottle of wine and everything. A friend of mine got denied his bottle of wine in 2012 for not wearing a correct jersey.

Although most stupid was probably Moreno Moser on his Cannondale 2013 team bike in full lycra team kit.

  • Will see if this year will help being British then :) :p

I got refused the bottle of wine in 2012 for not having a 'retro' enough shirt too. Fark, I was in such need for a beer I couldn't have given a toss!

  • They sound like cunts.

Dressing up is seriously lame anyway.

  • Just entered (via a mess up with the PIN number which they quickly put right to their credit)

    Got in for £55 :-)

Really looking forward to it, the hills, the pain and the first beer afterwards.

I've done the Tuscan version in 30c heat ( 2012 ) so fully expect to do Britannia in -5 wind chill and drizzle ...

No way bro. Dressing up is brilliant.

People stop taking shit so seriously when they put on funny old clothes. Maybe even roadies...

  • Just entered this, and looking forward to it. I have a 25inch 1983 Raleigh Record Ace that I will be advertising soon that would be suitable for someone tall riding this. I will be on my 1970 Holdsworth once I get the rear block changed to give me some up of riding up the hills!

Some of the stuff of an earlier era looks ok, actually. Plain and functional. I'd wear it now...

I doubt the 'inconspicuous' time triallists' black alpaca jackets kept the water out much. On the other hand wool seems to be well and truly in again. Odd to think those guys are in skinsuits and pointy helmets these days

  • i like dressing up in lamé anyway.

  • Anyone seen a gpx file for the route?
Let's see some pics of what you plan to ride.

  • Registered:)

Late, but they were very nice in agreeing for £55 anyway.

How did you do this? Begging email?

  • Nicely asked. Yeah.

  • Is it too late to enter? Is entry guaranteed if you pay?
