^ Oh hell yes!
If you're going for crabon rimz, on eBay they do 38/50mm deep rims that have a 25mm-outside/18mm-inside bead width = more volume for comfort / more surface area on road / better cornering / thicker higher strength bead / etc etc... with the newer "U" shaped profile like Zipp are using.
And they do 24h/28h, but will do other spoke drillings if you ask nice!

got a link? those ^^ are two separate listings, both require clearcoat...
they require clear coat to improve longevity but they will be fine with out. I got the top ones and they're fine

Thanks B0N0R. Might pull the trigger...
Also, out of interest, I weighed the frame/forks. This obviously won't be a WW build, but I wanted to know.
Frame: 2.207kg
Forks: 0.810kgQuite happy with that keeping in mind it's a 65cm frame and forks with almost 26cm of steerer.
Another thing I was wondering about is the serial number; both frame and forks are stamped MX 108. Is this the 108th frame they made with Max tubing? can't seem to find any info on Somec serial numbers online.

that's the sad part of the somec history. i tried to get any information on my golden somec track back in 2009 and contacted somec but they said all old information were lost while they were sold to a new owner/company. also the internet won't help you.

Hmm, that is sad. So much history!
Thanks for the info... what happened to your Somec?

sold it to a collector

Apollo, please don't sell this to a collector, it's way too nice to not keep.

Fucking ride it!
My Olagnero is going to look like it's survived a nuclear war by the time I'm done with it-that's the whole reason it was built; to be ridden for mile after mile, rain or shine.

keep it classic, dont jump on the modern-group/steel-frame band wagon, this is just a trend. the classic bits suit the frame way more and make the whole build authentic.

i'd go for the 9speed record titanium. but i'd be interested in the crowd's opinion on the 11speed super record and this frame. would it look ok?

You've got this the wrong way round. Full-retro builds are far more of a trend than updating an older frame to use with modern components, surely?

If modern id go with black group. If silver id prolly keep the 8 speed if i were you.
Gonna be nice either way.

Yes It would look ok, but I think super record is a bit over the top on a frame like this..

Thanks for the discussion, turning into an interesting debate!
I can see the benefit of not being period correct for a bike that will get ridden. Personally I hate single pivot brakes for example, and on my 653 Rourke, upgrading to Chorus double pivot (not pictured) was an excellent move. But that's only mechanically speaking.
I also really like period correct builds (aesthetically) but I can see the downside in terms of practicality in comparison to modern components. Monoplaner brakes, for example, I find beautiful. That being said, upgrading as far as possible seems a bit like trying to make the bike into something it's not. What next? zip-tying on some Di2 batteries and saying that it makes sense?
Further down the line, when the right opportunity for something black like Chorus 11 (via 2nd hand or trade) I might take the step.
For now, you can probably expect 9 speed Record Titanium. I know I'm gonna love it. I won't sell it to a collector and I will ride it.
Hopefully the next few days will be productive for the build.

Been thinking about wheels..
NOS Campagnolo Scirocco 20?
Campagnolo Nucleon?
Relace some 32h black Omega V's to my Chorus sealed hubs?
Something else? -
• #121
if relacing, i'd use something that has a machined braking surface.. might just be me but i don't like the way non-MSW rims wear. all wobbly and stuf..
-
• #122
Probably getting these from Furious Tiles anyway: Record hubs laced to black Mavic CXP 33
-
• #123
Scirocco 20's are so sexy though...
-
• #124
So this is getting modern groupset yeah?

^not yet.

here's a quick mock up with 8 speed Vento's (being sold), A-head Grammo and Soma HW1
You could get a modern black groupset and make another bumblebee?
