  • ^this may happen

Hoping that tomorrow is the day

  • We haz biek!

Insane amount of packaging... enough for two bikes. 18.5kg package!!! To give you an idea of how insanely packaged it was, the seller even removed the springs from the QR skewers, tied them together with wire and put them in a separate bag. That blue roll is about 5m x 1.5 m!

Now to build it up with what he sent me and then begins the migration to stronger wheels and Record Ti. Rear spacing is 130mm so the future's looking bright :)

  • Awesome. I'm sadly intrigued by this.

  • Took some pics of the frameset:

    couple more here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/apollo_0/sets/72157636292954644/

  • So please you got this pal! It's a total beaut... I was watching it too

  • RAD !

Good luck ant take your time mate.
    this frame is....

  • mérci Gaston and Jammy :)

Will have lots of questions in the coming days/weeks!!

  • Very nice frame, looks awesome. With campy it will no doubt be a great bike !

  • Thanks bbb..

    OK, now for question time:

1-The front of the lower Chorus headset cup touches the top of the front brake nut. I'll take a picture tomorrow if that isn't clear, but even with two anti-rotation washers on the front of the brake nut the clearance is too close. Is there a different headset (such as modern 1" Record) that has a lower profile bottom cup? Could I run a 1mm or 2mm spacer under the crown race?

2-The 16h Campagnolo Vento wheels that came with the frameset are 8sp, but seem to be 130 OLD. Is this normal? I was expecting them (and the frame) to be 126mm. The 36h Record to Open Pros that I have are also 130 OLD, as are some 9 speed Chorus to DT Swiss that I have. I can't try the 9 speed cassette on the Vento or Open Pro wheelsets as the cassette bodies are different. Ideally I would either a) like to run 9 speed on the Open Pros or b) sell the Open Pros and re-lace the Chorus hubs to 32h TB14s

3-If I can't do the above, could I just swap cassette bodies?

3-My Campagnolo cassette lockring removal tool strangely slots right into one lockring, but not into another, and likewise is not useable for the Athena and Chorus bottom brackets I have. It won't fit, but it almost fits. Did Campagnolo change the spline specs recently?

4- Should I ditch all these crazy Record Ti 9 speed plans and go 11 speed Athena? I've been staring at this for far too long today: http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s238/danlayton/Mercian1.jpg

5- Is a mixed Record Ti group a crime? I.e. inverted logos on some parts, not on others...

I'm also planning on cutting 1cm off the steerer, but I'm gonna wait for point 1 above to be resolved first as I don't wanna do anything irreversible.

Pics of all the parts I have so far tomorrow; some are nice, some are temporary.

  • I'd also love to give the forks Max decals to match the seat tube

Problem is that these require a clearcoat over the top. Has anyone heard of ones that don't?

I think the full set is overkill?

  • The ones I bought didn't, got them off ebay.

  • got a link? those ^^ are two separate listings, both require clearcoat...

  • 8spd = 130 old.

Columbus Max is Pron. I will sell my first born before my Olagnero.

Don't get ventos. They are heavy as shit and flex like a bastard out of the saddle which would be a pity on such a stiff frame.

11spd will be amazing on this. I was going to do a vintage build on mine but the frame was so light and stiff it could justify a modern group so... Sell record Ti, buy athena 11, spend the change on some ultra-fancy tyres.

Only regret is that I don't have an ahead fork as the convertors are shite and quill feels weird after years of riding ahead.

  • I already have the Ventos... The bike came with Ventos and full Chorus. I'm selling both. No way I'm riding 16 spoke 1x wheels.

I agree about 11 speed. oh man...

  • well there's not many vintage frames that can justify a modern group the way this can. OS tubes, super light and super stiff-felt better than my Ti or carbon frames and only a few grams difference in weight. whoop...

  • go for 10spd and buy a better group set

  • Thanks bbb..

Campagnolo 8 speed moved to 130 OLD but uses its own free hub body, not compatible with 9, 10, 11 which have a different free hub body. 9 speed cassettes won't fit, as you found out

    YES

Modern groupset on classic steel is rad

  • I'd go for a modern gruppo, too, if I were you.

  • Modern group needs low profile crabonz....

I would got with the record ti

  • £552 is good price for modern 11 speed groupset.
    Cheaper than Ultegra 6800.

    #GoModern

  • I thought you got rid of the rourke to get something more modern?

    I'd go modern.
