  • When the bikes finished and I know what it's like to ride then the gear ratio will be changed slightly. So 50 x 17t/18t for now...

  • Hubs arrived, and it turns out they're the wrong size. I measures the stays and fork incorrectly.
    The fork spacing is 100mm x 8mm.
The rear stays spacing is 110mm x 8mm.
Track supermarket say they have a conversion kits for 8 x 100 front and 8 x 110 rear, which is exactly what I need. Obviously, shipping will be pricey so i was wondering if anywhere in the UK sells them? Or is it worth returning the Gran Compe's and buying a completely different hubset? At the moment, i think i might just get the axle set and get it changed.

  • I'd file a flat on the axle where it sits in the dropout.

  • Why do the pictures never fucking work >:(

Here's a link to the dropbox folder.

  • I accidentally deleted a few messages. Oops. Anyway, the hubs arrived (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0wh18mu3nesuqvt/voZ3BmAMyl) and they're too big. the measurements I made are wrong and it turns out i need a 100mm by 8mm front axle and a 110mm by 8mm rear axle. Track supermarket stock both these so i might get it from there, if not i can get it from http://www.alexscycle.com/hubs-/keirin-njs-1-2-3-4-5/front-hubs-1-2/gran-compe-track-hub-axle-parts.html but im not sure if i need the kit or the axle. Does anyone know if i can get the parts in the UK?

  • You will likely need to order them from Japan.

I had to get my hubs from Japan, unless you can source the axles somwhere here and swamp them out, but I doubt it.

  • I think I'm getting one of them from Alex cycles, however they don't have both front and rear in stock. I presume I just need the axle rather than the axle kit?

  • I'd file a flat on the axle where it sits in the dropout.

I would just do this tbh, if you buy an axle kit it's just a regular axle with flats put on a it more professionally.

And I don't know about Gran Compe but DA hubs just have a spacer for 120/no spacer for 110, if an 110 conversion kit for the rear exists they should be the same so you can change the spacing yourself. Otherwise you will be able to fit it in there it'll just be a little annoying when you take the wheel in and out...

Has both front and rear axles, do i need the axle or the axle kit though? Given that the entire hub itself is brand new.

  • miloas. i second shinkuu kiss. see if you can remove 10mm of spacers to get to the required OLN. much easier then again ordereing axles, swapping them out etc.
    same applies for axle width.

  • Actually I looked at my hubs again and I think they have different sized locknuts rather than spacers, the Gran Compe might have a spacer tho and if not there will be something you can do that's easier than getting new axles, even if it's asking your LBS for some thinner locknuts or something.

  • yeah it'd be easier to find a uk based machinist to take the axles to 8mm, re the spacing though, i dont know, file bits down?

could you post a pic of that part of the hub so we can have a look, dropbox isn't working for me, might be privacy settings

I'm not sure if this works or not but those bits on the the end of the axle are the things stopping it from going in. The front hub is the correct width (100mm) but the axle diameter is too big at 9mm instead of 8mm. This could indeed be filed down but I wouldn't want to do it myself and don't know of anywhere that can do it professionally. I'm not sure if the LBS will do or not. If you know of anywhere that can do it please say. The rear however is too wide for the stays, being 120mm instead of 110mm. Those small things on the end of the hub look like they can be removed with a bit of effort, but even then would that be okay? I would still have to have both axles filed down professionally, or just file the front down and buy a rear axle.

  • [] Chain: Racing Pro NJS Track Chain
    [
]Bottom Bracket: Hatta R9400 Bottom Bracket Set

Just get some cheap chain and normal BB instead of shelling out a lots for something that barely make any difference for everyday riding.

  • Already have the BB and the chain will be bought second hand.

  • chain will be bought second hand.

This is probably a false economy. Riding with a worn chain accelerates the wear of other drivetrain components, costing you more in the long term.

  • P.S. I'm sorry that I always sound negative in this thread! It's going to be a great-looking machine almost whatever you do.

  • Good point. At the moment i want to get the wheel set dealt with, primarily the hub set. The drivetrain components, and all components for that matter may well change. I'm adopting the "cross that bridge when i come to it" mentality. Your negativity is useful though, so it's fine.

  • Got it. Do you build wheels? I only ask because it may be cheaper and less stressful to look for a suitable wheelset on here or eBay than to buy all the components separately and then pay £50 for the build.

  • I don't build wheels unfortunately. I already have the hubs (as i'm sure you already know), and depending on how much it's going to cost to make them suitable for my dropouts I will soon be buying both rims. Spokes and nipples i have no idea how much cost but it's going to be £40 for both builds, or i might be able to get a discounted build, or i might see if anyone on this forum can build wheels cheaper.

  • I've come to the realisation that for the most part this build will probably be made of mostly new parts, and that it's definitely not going to be cheap. Decided on B125s for handlebars as I don't want to change the cockpit every time I go to the track. I think I might bite the bullet and go for Dura Ace 7600 hubset in the required size. I've spoken to a friend and he knows a number of people that run these hubs and say they just need bit more maintanence, besides, i already have a "winter bike" if you will. Obviously this is going to delay the build a bit whilst i get money for the rest of the parts, but i'm not too bothered. I suppose that's half the fun eh?

  • Anyone know what bars these are?

  • I'm pretty sure they're Syntace Stratos.

  • Thanks man

  • but..but.. theyre silver.. to my knowing syntace was never made in silver. couldve de-anozed them.
anyway, i think there is a nitto handlebar quite the same shape as the stratos. dont know the type from the top of my head. rb-002? same curve inward vertivally and horizontally from riders perspective..
