Ah interesting thanks. I'd always wanted an old shamal rear, just cos. Will look into it though. Lacing up a shamal to a shinano freehub body hub seems like an expensive way to do things, just for aesthetic preference.
-
• #53
would be expensive, yes.. old shamal hubs did not have the option for shimano casette and had external pawls (so there is no shimano casette body that could be transfered as shimanos have internal pawls)

Did OG Shamals ever come in 9s? I know nothing about Campag, but somewhere in the ignorance lies the idea that the spline changed between 8s and 9s. If there is an OG Shamal with the current spline dimensions, I expect there's a hack using Marchisio sprockets and spacers to get a Shimano spaced 10s cluster onto it.

miche/marchisio route is always available - the thing is he specified the sram casette (that's why i did not bother writing that down..)
but if aesthetics are the priority, by all means, go for a marchisio casette!
OG? what is OG? shamal titanium had the looks of the first gen but was 9speed. don't know if there was a "regular" 9speed version..

OG? what is OG?
Original Gangster
I was using it to distinguish the lovely old Shamals from the 1990s from the great steaming turd of a wheel on which Campag, in their desperation, have reused the name.

Proper Shamals were only 9 speed for two years ('97 and '98), so relatively scarce compared to 8 speed ('93 to '97).
I don't know if a 9 speed freehub could be retro-fitted, even if you could get one at a price that makes it worthwhile.
Shamal rims laced to Shimano hubs (a shim-sham?) come up on Ebay quite often though.

The shimashamadingdong sounds like the best way to go if possible. Hopefully that way somebody else has swallowed the initial cost of getting the wheel relaced. The marchisio route is also a plan is the splines are compatible. As long as I can get a shamal wheel to work properly with a sram bar end shifter/ rear mech then I'm golden.

ah, thanks!

well, then i'd go for the marchisio conversion. cheap, and cogs can be replaced separately should something happen to them.

Last Friday the frame went off to Saffron Frameworks. Matthew was really helpful and listened to what I wanted and also made some great suggestions.
The plans for the frame are:Fill chainstay holes with braze. This seems safe enough as the steel is quite a thick gauge.
Grind off the bb cable guide, and replace with a more elegant solution underneath the bottom bracket shell.
Remove the downtube shifter mount and replace with a repositioned sti mount.Paint

I have also started gathering a few more parts, and am trying to resist fitting them when the frame is done so I can get that photo.

I am, seen a few forumenger out and very much enjoying it. Any events close I'll keep an eye out for. When it's done you're welcome to take some photos.

Thanks. I'm afraid the paint certainly won't be hhsb worthy. Although it will be brilliant.

i'm really looking forward to seeing this completed but i was wondering: why would you want to grind off the original cable guides? what's wrong with them?
-
• #66
Thanks, but no nothing is wrong with them.
When I started the project my plan was to find out who built the frame and get it repainted appropriately fitting period parts. After trying quite hard and not finding this out, I don't feel so precious about keeping things original.
I want to be able to use the bike and have a good time doing so with some modern components. I'm not going to use a downtube shifter, so it seemed to make more sense adjusting the frame around what I want. Removing the BB shell cable guide was mainly an aesthetic decision to clean up the overall look.
The more bikes I build up the less precious I seem to become, favoring usability and grin-factor.

If you don't get some extra fillets done by the builder don't be shy to get some bondo around those gussets before paint... they're a bit of a mess hey? Pretty damn cool though.
Good ideas so far. Rad frame. -

It's too late now, but yeah you're not wrong they are bit of a state.
-

These sort of adaptations are a world away from fixie-fashion Dremel attacks that reduce a frame's usability and screw-up the geo.
You haven't mentioned it, but I'm sure it's covered: if you're moving the BB cable guide, you'll also need to move the chainstay guide.
-
• #70
Yes the chainstay cable guide will be flipped to the underside, well spotted.
Looking forward to getting this back now, and pleased I didn't go with my initial headtube decal idea. -
• #71
I suppose that's up for grabs as it's unknown: what are you having?
-
• #72
White again. I like that nod to performance of a simple white bike which seems fairly period for other crazy lo pros.

Holy fuck, I need that purple kit in my life.
which shamal hub? the newer ones can be converted to shimano casette body - not sure when they started producing shimano compatible wheels though..
