blue fleet - thanks but I will just get round to ordering the appropriate bolts. I can't handle colour mismatches to be honest :)
I'm not that worried about it to be honest - if this was the bike I fly down Kentish hills at 40mph on I might be.
Dungeness - hmm, yes I need to sort that out. I also need to recce this ride!

Can anyone make a guess at our potential return time?
-
• #63
I reckon you won't be back at Liverpool St / home any earlier than 6. It's nice to have a little stop now and again, St Peters-On-The-Wall is really worth spending a bit of time around and it's at least 45 mins back on the train. Of course if it's a smooth ride out then we'll easily be ahead of schedule and could be earlier...then again who knows!

Me!
I'd really like to get the 18:10 train if at all possible, which gets into Liverpool Street at 19.29. I've drafted a (rough) itinerary, which looks like this:
41 miles East Hanningfield for lunch - 1pm
60 miles Bradwell Nuclear power station – 3.30pm
63 miles St-Peter-on-the-Wall – 4pm - Depart for Burnham 4.30pm
75 miles Burnham-on-Crouch - 5.30pmThat's based on a 12/13mph moving average, so should be achievable.
If we miss the 18:10 it's not the end of the world, but there isn't another train until the 19.10, which gets in at 20.29.
I reccied this ride on Sunday, as promised, and can confirm that nothing has really changed over the last two years, although there are now wind turbines quite near to St-Peter-on-the-Wall.
I'm not sure how I feel about that. They really dominate the landscape in a way the nuclear power station never does. Although there has been a wind farm out at sea there for a while, that's never bothered me as they are far away, and look more elegant, picked out in a line across the horizon.
The weather wasn't great on Sunday, but I was lucky as the wind was behind me (always a factor on the Dengie) and the rain didn't arrive until I'd just leant my bike up against the church and ducked inside to view the guestbook, which unfortunately was full. I'll try to ask if they can put some more pages in before Sunday, if I can work out who to ask.
When the rain did come you could see it coming across the marshes for miles, like someone was pulling a gigantic grey quilt across the landscape. I shut the door of the church and heard the sound of the rain against the ancient door, then wanted to see outside, so opened it again. The wind howled and groaned through the church (the door faces west, into the wind) and rain started splattering on the flagstones, so I shut it again. This took more effort than I imagined at first. The heavy door, being pushed by the wind, took quite a heave to engage on the latch, then all was quiet again. It's a peaceful place, which fills you with a feeling of serenity and the sense of being somewhere very, very old that hasn't changed for a long time.
It's a lovely place.

Sounds awesome.
Are we stopping at a pub in East Hanningfield?Yup, we'll stop at the Windmill Tavern as we did last time. However, that time they were really slow getting food out. I don't expect we'll have time for food ordering, so I'd strongly recommend bringing your own food and not relying on the pub for lunch.
Also on a ride I did with some SEs last year we got absolutely soaked by torrential rain before East Hanningfield, then tried to stop there for some lunch, but they told us all the tables were full when they clearly weren't, so I'm still a bit pissed off with them about that.

This.

Hippy :P
Oh god my head hurts... Yeah the tavern was involved. I meant that you were right that I haven't changed. So I just posted exactly the same thing I posted back then.
