  • ^^^Thank you, ^^Thank you, ^Thank you!

Test ride tomorrow, the coastal commute, no wet stuff predicted, possibility of further photos in natuwal enviwoment (David Bellamy voice).

Photography is a bit of a cheat when you have a studio and lighting.....

  • Bravo! I love those Simplex levers. Wish I'd looked after mine a bit better!

  • Really nice result Colin.

You could make it even better if those Module rims were replaced by GEL or equivalent, and matching SR RD !

  • ^^I didn't look after mine either, just spent bloody ages cleaning them up and had new stainless bolts made!

^The SR mech might happen. The rims are GP4s, the original 'race anywhere' tub rims. GELs will definitely not happen, I once lost a race when I was away by 2 mins and the front GEL280 spontaneously exploded (ok, I was daft enough to use 28s as race wheels).

  • I stand corrected on the rims!

  • Sit if you prefer, but don't buy GELs unless you like walking.....

  • Test ride on the coastal commute completed yesterday without incident; apart from adjustments to gears and brakes, the headset working loose and a shoeplate ditto. The joys of old machinery, I should shoot the builder!

When I wasn't fiddling with a multitool it rode beautifully, but boy did I miss the other 5 gears..... At least it felt like I'd never been without toeclips and downtube levers.

It also gave me an excuse to take some isn't-my-commute-lovely pictures.

  • Hi colin, i have read your thread about your "aerodynamic". Really nice!
As i have bought an aerodynamic in a rideable but "poor" condition about 4 weeks ago, your thread was very helpful to put the frame back close to its original version. i had it completely sanded, then painted and today i have applied all decals and put some parts, that i have ripped from my bianchi super rekord 915 , on it.
unfortunately the paint doesnt match the colour of my gios super record, which i had as a reference, when choosing the colour. but anyways i am happy to have a really rare bike. cheers olli

  • Hello to Germany!

That's looking great Olli, good to know there is a twin (doppelganger?) in Germany. Glad to hear my thread has been of use to someone. Don't lose sleep over the colour not matching, 'Gios blue' has changed hugely over the years, I've seen many originals no two of which match!

Isn't having two Gios a bit greedy? You should give the Super Record to me! What happened to the stripped Bianchi?

  • Hi again, a few days ago, I have completed my Gios (the only things, I will probably change are the seat post- Shimano 600ax to a Campagnolo and maybe the seat- I think, the Brooks doesnt match the rest of the bike, even though, i have cut the sides a bit and its really comfortable. I am thinking about a Selle Rolls or Turbo.) cheers olli

  • Colin, I am assuming on your ride through town and on to glyne gap that you used the road, and not the weird hardpack pebble covered beachside track? Absolutely beautiful bike by the way, very impressive!

  • ^Paranoia alert! They have drones and are watching me from space.......

If I admit to climbing Old London Road he (she?) will know where I live and will send round a SWAT team demanding tea and doughnuts with menaces.

For those who are 'not from around here, are you', the local Council has in its wisdom provided us with an alleged cycle path suitable only for tracked vehicles or hybrids, no, I don't use it! Oh, and thank you Cantab.

^^Olli, just get a Campag seatpin and a Turbo, you know you want to and it would look much better....

  • i have an album with many pictures of my rebuilt gios aerodynamic uploaded on german bike forum. if any one is interested, check out the following:

  • hi colin, the campa chorus seatpin just arrived this morning and is already installed (hard to find with the 27 diameter and not too cheap, as it was nos). youre right with the turbo, it looks much better, than the brooks. unfortunately i have recently sold a bike with a beautiful turbo (with the champion stripes on it). i should have kept it. but the black suede looks nice. probably i will go for it .
    cheers olli

My congrats to your beautifull Projekt. I havent had the opurtunity to follow your Build up thread on you know where ;) Thanx for your pm

  • Hy from Germany,
A fantastic effort to restore it from scratch And you where succesfull! Watch Out for it because only 200 of it where made in 1981
And maybe you have another guess regarding the lever boss -Please
    Cheers

  • Hah! I will maybe send round my dad, once he has his old Peugeot competition back on the road again, sadly I don't have a tea hunting SWAT team at my disposal. I live in London now but I did pop down recently to avail myself of a shiny new road bike courtesy of atb sales.

  • Wow, my humble thread seems to have been taken over by Germans, they are very welcome! So is Cantab's Dad and his Peugeot, doughnuts at a neutral venue I think.....

Gios Compact, show us your bike, I could take a wild guess at what it is.

Olli, pic with the new Turbo and seatpin please.

I have done something terrible today, I have put modern pedals on the Aero. Let me explain; I want to ride it frequently and Dad's shoes like Dad will not last forever, so they'll be saved for special days and hopefully l'Eroica if I can ever get in. And the disapproving puritans can bugger off!

More than 500 Miles in Training with hooks, straps And Detto Pietro Shoes. And I'll gonna switch too! I was simply Lucky, not hurting myself so far, but for L'Eroica I'll Take them back on.

You can't see them when you're pedalling.

  • Phil, in winter I can't even see my feet without a mirror!

  • utterly gorgeous, mind saying what those bar end plugs are?

  • Hello colin and "gios compact", i have received a reply from Marco Gios on my query for some information about the aerodynamics. He confirmed, that there have been built 200 frames only. So it is really worth being a collectors bike. but my understanding of a race bike is, that it has to be ridden. anyways i will try to keep it in a nice condition and wont ride it in rain, but it will collect miles! I have started riding race bikes two years ago and i have an average of 3000 kms per year. i think, the two gios and my hercules, that i ride alternating, will give me many years of fun.

  • Gios Comp, that is a chainset, not a bike, show us the rest!

Olli, at 3,000 km a year the aero will last forever, mine did about 12,000 a year for at least six years and many more since. The question is, where are the other 198?

Rosie, they came with the not-actually-Benotto-fake tape, I think I have a spare pair from taping my Goff for the track, if I can find them they're yours.

  • OK Colin ready for porn?
