  • All the spoke calculators came out different, I double checked my findings with someone else. I need 32 X 290mm and 32 X 292mm

  • Whats the tyre clearance like on the frame? big enough for cross tyres?

  • Yep. It's pretty much a cross frame with bosses and cx tyres are usually only around the 33mm mark anyway.

  • I'm thinking I might actually run it as a cross bike till winter sets in actually.

    I just ordered the spokes so hopefully i'll have some wheels by the end of the week.

  • Whats the tyre clearance like on the frame? big enough for cross tyres?

    38c would be the max sans guard.

    With mudguard, 32mm is doable, 33.3mm is pretty much on the threshold of being too big with mudguard.

  • Where can you buy the frame online? You think its worth getting one over a kaffenback for the difference in price?

  • Can I ask which bars these are, please? I'm interested in splayed bars like these for my own commuto-cross effort, but I don't even know the correct term for this style of bar.

  • Did you see the new Croix de Fer?

    It even got a different drop out.

    They're Salsa Cowbells', I very much like the new drop outs, reminds me of Surley for some reason.

    In other news, my spokes came today so the wheel build will be underway soon! I've been wondering if I should buy some challenge Grifo XS tyres for cross based fun...

  • Yeah nice with the CNC'd G in there. Shame they aren't post mount.

    Depends what you are looking for in a CX tyre, but Michellin Mud ii are also pretty rad. No faux tub dyed sidewalls though.

  • I have always wanted some of the original mud's though :(

  • Buy Mud 2s and some of this;

  • FWIW, the Mud 2s are a very good all round tyre, good in mud and surprisingly good in dry and dusty conditions too.

    The Grifo XS are great in the dry, but as soon as it gets wet they offer very little grip.

  • I don't trust my very knobbly tyres to grip (Rocket Rons), so corner very cautiously- then I saw that AndyP had what looked to be 90% file tread with side lugs, and was going significantly faster than me through the corners.

  • Vittoria XN;

  • I've got some Palsa's from before, which i suspect wouldnt be much worse than file tred tyres if they were run at a slightly lower pressure.

    Don't be surprised - tread just clears mud. Pressure - or a lack of it - gives you grip. No mud? Don't need no tread.

  • Vittoria XN;

    These look like they'd be handy for a grass crit.

  • Or, if you can get a bank loan:

  • That would require new wheels, tyres, and some glooin'.

    Not going to happen.

  • Yet Neil, yet.

  • Wheels have been build, they're currently being trued.

    little teaser:

    looks kinda awful in that, but its not

  • Off hand does anyone happen to know what size bolts I need to attach the callipers mounts to the frame? M6?

  • V. jealous.

  • I've got a 56cm Croix de Fer but I'm 6'3", Is it worth doctoring it to make it fit me or should I get a 60cm? Seeing the Surly with long seatpost and hi-rise bars makes me think it might work for me...
